It's the place to go for authentic Mexican tacos. It's owned by a famous James Beard Award winning chef. Cristina Martinez's lamb barbacoa and handmade heirloom corn tortillas are featured on at least 3 Netflix shows. It's a restaurant that we couldn't pass up, and it totally lives up to the hype. First of all, it's cash only. There's an ATM machine conveniently located inside the restaurant. The ordering process was easy. We were greeted immediately and handed a menu. The service here is fantastic! The staff greet you with smiles and warm welcomes. There's lots of indoor and outdoor seating. We were there at an off peak time so there were no issues finding a table. My husband ordered the 3 taco deal. He chose steak as the protein. I had 2 individual tacos so that I could try the barbacoa and cochinita pibil. We also split the guacamole with handmade chips. It came with 2 tasty hot sauces. I could definitely taste the jalapeño in the green sauce. My husband loved all the spicy toppings and sauces. It was exactly as we thought it would be in terms of flavor. Especially the cochinita pibil which is something we had previously in the Yucatan. Everything was so clean and fresh tasting. The technique in making the barbacoa truly brings out the full flavor of the lamb. The value was there considering the amount of protein in each taco. The toppings were all fresh and delicious. The nopales (cactus) was a new topping for me. I had a few on the side to try it. It was a nice addition to the barbacoa. I can't forget to include the mango agua fresca and complimentary cake in this review. The aqua fresca was the best I've ever had. The mango was all natural. I didn't detect any artificial flavors. I believe the cake was apple cinnamon. They make different ones daily or seasonally. It was the perfect ending, and not too sweet. Don't miss this gem in South Philly. Best tacos I've had on the east coast. They chop the barbacoa right on to your taco in front of you. The bar has a fantastic variety of tangy, spicy, bright toppings and salsas to make your taco your own. My favorite is always the reddish orange salsa and this one tastes just like the taco places back in Texas. The tacos are hefty, so that makes up for the slightly higher than average price. They didn't have jamaica when I went so they subbed in mango juice and it was incredible, my new go-to. Service is friendly, fast and there's plenty of seating and a nice outdoor space. read more

They prefer cash but if you absolutely don't have cash, they have an ATM by the door or you can order from a tablet. From the moment I walked in, I felt the warmth and hospitality as if I'm a guest at somebody's house. I placed my order and my food came out quickly all hot and fresh. They have a station next to the counter where you can put onions, cilantro, hot sauce, etc. on your food. 3 Barbacoa Tacos: You can get 3 tacos with one type of meat for $13 if you're getting carnitas, cochinita pibil, grilled steak, grilled chicken, root vegetables or chorizo. It's $18 for barbacoa. The lady who let me in assured me I can't go wrong with their barbacoa and I'm glad I listened to her because it's the best barbacoa I've had outside of Mexico. You know how some taquerias give you 2 tortillas on top of each other with a little bit of meat on top? Not here! Their tortilla is so well-made that they only need one and can hold a whole lot of juicy, tender and flavorful meat! Came here for New Year's Day. With a group of eight. They're known for their lamb tacos. It says set for $21. They have a vegetable and taco topping stand, which is generous and you can put as much as little as you want. We also got cups of hot water and regular water. In the vegetable station, you have pickled cactuses, jalapeño onion, carrots, and pickles. You also have the regular onion, cilantro, wine concoction so it's nice to have a bit of pickled and regular vegetables. The inside is still a little chilly for New Year's Day since it's only 20 something degrees outside but it's a festive atmosphere well Mexican music being played. I had heard about South Philly Barbacoa/Casa Mexico for several years; I had also seen it featured on a food show. I thought it was time to try out this 'storied' restaurant. I had thought there were two separate restaurants, Barbacoa and Casa Mexico , but it appears they have 'merged' into one. We ordered in the front, and took seats in the back to move away from the door, as it was cold outside.....and a little too cool inside. I wasn't sure if I should takeoff my winter coat, but I did. We ordered the Guacamole, the Barbacoa, Steak, and Veggie tacos. When I ordered, I mentioned that, if possible, I like the meat(s) in my tacos to be lean, which can be challenging to find sometimes. The staff was very nice and said they would make a note of the request. The Guacamole and chips came out first. The Guacamole was fresh, creamy and as delicious as could be. It compensated for the chips, which were too hard, had no salt or flavor. The tacos came out together. The meat was as lean as I could have expected, both the steak and lamb. There is a small serving area near the front where there are some additions for the tacos - chopped onions - finally chopped dried cilantro - some sauces - cactus and other vegetables. I was hoping to see either a Pico de gallo or salsa, to add to the taco, but there were none. I added some veggies and guacamole, which improved the flavor and added depth to the taco. While the meats were lean, they were rather bland - the homemade taco shells were average, and Vegan taco was okay. This place has been on my bucket list for a while and I finally got to try it. Truly fantastic food. There was a short line when we arrived The menu is fairly short, but I think it is all the highlights. We got the shrimp and barbacoa tacos with horchata and jamaica to drink. The taco toppings (pickled jalapenos&carrots, cactus, onion, cilantro) and sauces brought balance in acidity and spiciness to the tacos. I liked how you can customize it. Shrimp tacos: each one had a large fried shrimp on it. The shrimp was not greasy at all. It had a nice crisp on the outside and was very fresh and tender. Barbacoa: fantastic! Again the meat was super tender and each taco had a hefty portion. There is the tiniest hint of gaminess of lamb at the end but I enjoyed it. Horchata: not my favorite. I will forever remember this delicious barbacoa and consume. The hand made tortillas had the right thickness to them. They complimented the meat really well. The barbacoa was cooked so tender and very flavorful. The console was deliciously packed with garbanzos and rice. Everything was so good and flavorful. Have had many a taco when I lived in the Mission in SF. First time having pancita, spicy and rich, along with a soursop Aqua Fresca. Enough tables for inside seating. Visited Philly Barbacoa on a Friday for lunch and was pleasantly surprised by the experience. The barbacoa meat was absolutely delicious, tender, and flavorful. The standout feature was the live taco station where your tacos are prepared fresh right in front of you. You get to customize your toppings, and one unique option was cactus, which was a delightful addition and highly recommended! The soup, however, was essentially a simple broth with rice and chickpeas, lacking meat and depth of flavor. While it wasn't terrible, it didn't quite meet the expectations set by the exceptional tacos. Service was polite and prompt. The ambiance is casual and reminiscent of Mexico. Chef Christina, a James Beard award winner, comes out to greet guests, which was a wonderful personal touch and made the visit even more memorable. Note that there are 2 restaurants in one i.e. there is also 'Casa Mexico' with a different menu in the same exact place. This was slightly weird as one of them is cash only and the other one takes card and offers table service. I think the management should revisit this strategy. On a recent trip to Philadelphia, my friends and I stopped in here to sample the famous Barbacoa as featured inNetflix Chef's table. We read online that the quesadillas are to die for and ordered those along with two Barbacoa tacos per person. If you are like me, and your only exposure to Barbacoa has been the one that is sold at chipotle and is very spicy and full of flavor, you might be a little disappointed here. The Barbacoa was juicy, fatty, mild and lightly seasoned. It's definitely the type of meat that does need a accompaniments to really make the flavor shine. We were told by the guy working the counter that some of the toppings would be spicy but none of the toppings really were that spicy. The green salsa was very much on the mild side and the red salsa did not have that crazy kick to it that I was expecting. I even tried chili oil and it wasn't super spicy. I think that part of the experience was a little disappointing for me because I do expect Mexican food to have a little bit of kick to it. I absolutely loved the texture of the tortillas, the masa was super smooth, and not rubbery, the tortillas were pliable and soft, and just melted in your mouth, which I absolutely loved. The Horchata tasted good, although I would have liked to taste some more cinnamon notes in it. The quesadillas were very simple just tortilla and cheese. Definitely not the type of quesadillas I'm used to, but I still liked them and they would make for a good snack on their own. The lines started building up pretty quickly once we got there so I would suggest getting here a little bit earlier than usual and making it a breakfast pitstop, which is what we did before taking on our day of adventure. The neighborhood is pretty lively and there's tons to do in the area. I love the colorful seating inside the spot, even though it looks pretty basic from the outside. Definitely go check this place out for a unique taco experience. read more

Many years later when I re-visited after their big reveal on netflix, it was still just as amazing if you can see passed the price hikes and long lines. The quality and care is second to none when it comes to authenticity and flavors. After my few month stint in CDMX tasting the best of the best, I have some self proclaimed credibility in the taco game. The barbacoa is seasoned to perfection without being shy on the spices. Rich in collagen that make your fingers sticky is the only way I want my barbacoa. I also love how they stay true to themselves with the use of offals for us more adventurous eaters.
