I've been shopping at South Moon Under since 2001 -- and I used to really love it! It was super stylish and fun and carried trendy, cute pieces from brands you couldn't always easily find elsewhere. I went in today and I learned from the salesperson that the store generally does not stock anything larger than a size large. I'm 5'10 and was hoping to find a slightly roomier version of the coat that I had tried on and liked. (I found out later through a quick online search of literally just the brand's name that the coat is currently available in larger sizes at other retailers in four separate colors.) I'm surprised by management's decision to not be size-inclusive. Really, not a single XL anywhere in your store? It's out of touch and not a decision or organization I want to support with my money. As much as I like to shop small businesses, I don't want to shop small-minded ones. I'd much rather take my clothing budget to Aerie or Fenty, both of which are known for inclusivity -- or even across the street to J Crew or Anthropologie, which both carry a broader range of sizes. read more

The return policy is not stated on the receipt. They changed the return policy to 14 days! Who has time to run back to a store within 14 days if you change your mind? Tags on and all, and they still wouldn't take back the merchandise. Overpriced, and now no decent customer consideration. read more

Management should be ashamed. It's 84 degrees outside today. It's at least that inside this store, maybe higher. I asked the sweating young ladies working there, how they could stand the heat and was told the AC had been out all summer!! Despite the miserable working conditions, the customer service was great. Cute stuff. No one greeted me or spoke to me. I went to kill some time before meeting a friend nearby for dinner. It was full of young ladies, probably 17-20 years old. One said she really liked a coat and her friend said it looked like something a 30 year old would wear I'm 37 but wasn't offended. It was a cute coat! read more

Sales "girls" (women) are very friendly but the merchandise is trendy and girlish with the exception of the Frye boots. Clothes seem cheaply made although some of the longer dresses would be fun for a whirl in the summer. The mannequins are dressed well with ideas for layering South Moon Under (love the name) pieces but overall the styling seems a little trendy without being cool. Two and a half stars. Picked up a damaged bag marked for clearance. Some cute stuff, pricey, salesgirls unfortunately unfamiliar with fresh inventory if it hasn't arrived in their store yet, and equally unfamiliar with anything they've recently gone out of. So basically some decent product at hiked prices with terrible service. I always find myself browsing through the racks at this store, but rarely ever buy anything. Although some things are cute, there isn't enough variety to satisfy my thirst for shopping. They offer trendy items, but nothing that you can't find elsewhere... and it's expensive, especially since a lot of the stuff they sell (or very similary items) can be found at Nordstrom Rack or Lohmann's or BlueFly. If you want high end, better service, and a wider variety, just go to Tysons. When willing to put down the big bucks, I go to Saks. On a good note, the housewares are cute and make good last-minute gifts for those living or working by the Town Center. read more

Not sure why this place has less than a 5 star rating... From the moment I walked in the sales associate was really helpful in guiding me to what I was looking for. She wasn't pushy about full priced items, she showed me what I wanted (which was on clearance). When I was in the fitting room they were really helpful in finding me the right size/different color. When I was looking at shoes she was quick to get them for me. At check out the lady was really nice and signed me up for discounts immediately, while not being pushy about it. Wow, I'm really surprised this place has so many low ratings. I go to this location 2-3 times a month and I am never disappointed. I have visited them at other locations to include all the way up to the inner harbor in Baltimore, and have found that quality of clothing and staff has never seemed to differ. The staff is always very friendly, and they always have been helpful, attentive, and pay attention to detail. These girls have also mastered the "up sell" but showing me shoes or handbags that would match the clothing I am buying. The fashions are always very trendy, and they have a great selection on swimwear. They also have a great selection of jewelry. I have found certain items (jewelry, scarves, and a pair of leggings to be exact) that were priced much much less elsewhere, For instance there was an infinity scarf I really liked but didn't buy because of its over 100$ price point, and I later found the same scarf at Nordstrom for 55$, so if something seems very overpriced it may infact be very overpriced, read more

South Moon Under has a small men's section, very small. As if they ran out of women's merchandise and couldn't figure out what to do with the back left corner of the shop. SMU carries a small collection of mainstream designers: OBEY, 7 for all Mankind, Diesel, nothing you wouldn't find at Nordstrom. The staff is very helpful, I saw a pair of Joe's Jeans I admired but they did not have my size, the lady who helped me had the jeans shipped from their National Harbour location free of charge. A very nice gesture that will have me coming back. read more

Buyer Beware. You might pay a premium for these ultra-expensive items, but this store WILL NOT HONOR the quality of their products. I used to shop here for several years until I purchased a pair of nearly $100 sandals that broke down within 2 months (not normal wear-and-tear, but a piece of gold plastic fronting just completely came off - turned out to be very cheap quality) and tried to return them but the "manager" refused a refund because they had been "clearly worn." Yes, I told the store they had been worn but I expect much more out of $100 sandals - it would've been nice if they had at least lasted the entire summer! I was talked down too and still refused even when I insisted. As a loyal customer, I did not feel valued in the slightest (I've spent A LOT of money here in the past). E-mailing customer service resulted in no response. Yes, the store carries some trendy brands but why not shop at Nordstroms where they will honor the quality of their products and accept returns for items that are clearly not worth the high markup. If I'm going to pay such a high price for a product, I expect to trust that the product will last. I will continue to frequent Nordstroms for years to come due to their awesome customer service but will no longer shop at SMU which just cares about short-term gain rather than fostering good relationships with their customers. read more

Stopped by Sunday afternoon and was looking at jewelry accessories display, I stood there for maybe 10-15 minutes without anyone asking whether I would like to check something out or try anything on. 2 women were behind the shoe display chit chatting, one was assisting a customer at the register, and another on was at the jewelry department for 5 mintues juist chit chatting to whom seemed to be an old employee. YES I KNOW THAT BECAUSE I WAS STANDING THERE waiting to be assisted. read more

The clothing is nice, and there's a pretty wide selection at this location, but the staff is absolutely awful. At best they act bored/disinterested, ignore customers, at worst, innefficient, and always with a bad attitude. I never feel comfortable going in, might be avoiding it from now on. read more

I love this place. Everything in it from the clothes to the housewares are interesting. I could look around for years. I have never bought anything here because it is pricey, but I love to think about what I would buy if I DID have the money. If a zero star rating was an option that would have been my selection. I have patronized South Moon Under for a few years but this is my first visit to this location. I have never encountered such blatant avoidance - which leads me to believe no one in the store was willing to offer assistance due to my fiance's race. We were in the store for over 20 minutes and were never acknowledged. I was so stunned by the lack of customer service prior to leaving I asked an associate (or so I thought) for a manager. She said she was the manager. I told her that I have never experienced anything or the sorts at any other location and all she said was "I am sorry". To my surprise, there were 4 associates on the floor that not once acknowledged us. I can no longer patronize a store with blatant discriminatory practices. read more

I called them and they said that customers have not complaint and "it is part of their operation". I love the store brand and its merchandise, but the staff at the Reston location are not customer-focused. Numerous times I have been told that I can't return online goods at the store (which isn't true), and often the staff aren't aware of how to process transactions like returns, purchases with gift cards, etc. It's disappointing, and has happened so many times to me that despite loving the merchandise, I'm going to stop shopping at the Reston location (which really means the brand since the Arlington one isn't that close). read more
