Upscale beach meets Coachella chic. This is a fun shop with nice staff. What's on the hangers and tables is what there is. For men, you'll find Johnnie-O and Faherty brands. The rest of the store is fashionable women's casual to evening out, with an emphasis on elegant festival wear. Prices are what you would expect, high, but consistent with the brands they offer. It's not like you will get a better deal on the same clothes elsewhere. So for convenience and selection in Clarendon, this is very good. I only wish they had more men's clothing. read more

I believe I was sent a defective pair of jeans under a "final sale--no returns" discount. The Agolde jeans were unbelievably inexpensive, only $77, and in my size. Upon receipt, I was dismayed to see that the distressing on the pocket was ground right through the denim and into the pocket beneath. It was much more dramatic than in the picture, but I couldn't return them as they were final sale. They also had a strong smell of perfume, and it took four washes to get that out, after which the pocket looked even worse. At that point I threw them away. I did write a letter to the store manager, but got no response. I feel these jeans never should have left the store. Terrible merchandise and an I-don't-care attitude from management. read more

I already had the bracket from my daughter and the sweater I got was itchy so went to return it as soon as I could but only can up to 6th of January not even store credit for items not touched. One of the benefits of the Clarendon expansion --at least in my opinion-- is that I don't have to haul out to Reston to go to this store. Originally a surf shop based in Ocean City, South Moon Under is now a women's boutique specializing in specialty items. South Moon Under features high-couture brands like Free People, Lynn Linn, Central Park West and Seven. The jewelry here is pretty, pretty, pretty. There's also decorative touches for home. The only thing that has been carried over from their surf shop days are a huge selection of swimsuits and resort wear year round. So, if you are heading to the tropics this winter, and have some extra cash to spend---this is the place to shop. The price tags are not for the faint of heart. read more

I'm being really generous with that third star. Believe you me... So I'm in Clarendon, just having finished my Genius Bar appointment at the Apple Store a few doors down. Having read some of the other comments here, and having nothing else to do today, I decided to check it out. Interestingly enough, the men's section is at the very front of the store. Usually it's never like that. See, I've learned in several marketing classes that you put impulse purchase items up front ('cause that's the first thing you see... go into the mall entrance of your nearby department store, and you'll almost always pass by cosmetics and fragrances... high end stuff that people buy on impulse). Either that, or women's clothing, since women tend to shop for clothes more than men. Or maybe it's just 'cause the space up front was the only place left. The men's section is, well, slightly bigger than a walk-in closet. In terms of selection, everything skewed either towards medium or 2XL (prolly because of the holidays). Now, the clothes looked nice, but you can honestly cobble together the same look from The Limited/Aeropostale/Hollister/Abercrombie and Fitch/American Eagle/you get the picture for a lot cheaper. A LOT cheaper. I saw a nice shirt and while looking to see if they had it in my size, noticed the (approximately) $200 price tag. For. A. Shirt. I checked the label. Hmm... isn't guaranteed to give me beercan girth. Doesn't say anything about being ravaged by hordes of women bashing down my apartment door for some hot shirt lovin'. Nothing at all about how I'll make the game-winning touchdown in the Super Bowl. Nothing guaranteeing me that by wearing this shirt that I'll be able to drop from the ceiling at a terrorist meeting somewhere and lay down the smack with dual katanas and backflips in slo-mo accompanied by a slammin' techno-industrial soundtrack. No dice. The verdict: Frankly, even if I had the mad money to splurge on these clothes (and don't get me wrong, they looked quite nice), it's your typical striped shirt/pre-faded-in-the-ass-and-thighs look that you can find at lots of other places. I just can't justify it if it isn't anything that'll set me apart from the pack. I didn't have much interaction with the clerks, but I got a cheery welcome when I walked in, and they didn't hover over me either. That's what's giving SMU a third star. Oh, and they had a BIG fashion nono on one of the mannequins facing the street: vertical big-striped shirt with clashing regimental striped tie. That's something you just don't ever do. It honestly hurt my eyes looking at it. Who knows... maybe they're catering to the bachelor crowd. In that case, they'll want to have another mannequin displaying mismatched socks and tighty-whities with holes and perhaps some rather unfortunate stains in the crotch and/or seat. read more

This is a fantastic store, but like most people, it's a bit out of my price range. Still, when I'm in the area, I always pop in to scan the sale racks and see if there's anything I just can't live without. I can usually find something that, even if not on sale, is semi-affordable. They carry brands like Steve Madden and Reef next to Jeffrey Campbell and Trina Turk. What I most love here is the jewelry, which can be found right up front. Interesting, artful pieces. read more

Danger Will Robinson! Danger! This store will break the bank. The mens clothes, not so great. The women's clothes, jackpot! This is probably one of the most dangerous stores for me to go in (and I avoid it as much as possible) because I hardly ever dislike what's currently being featured. This is another one of those stores where the clothing is straight out of the fashion mags. The jewelry too. It's all super cute and very trendy. They also have a great bathing suit section in the back and a gift section in the front (I have found many cute Xmas presents here that wound up being gifts to me instead). South Moon Under is the exact opposite of those adorable little boutiques that you go in full of hope, but leave because all of the clothes are way overpriced and not worth the money. From the outside it looks like a cross between a Chico's and a Tommy Bahama for some reason, but inside it has a fantabulous selection of clothes/shoes/accessories and a fun home section. I've gotten great stuff here. $35 for a cute straw clutch shaped like a clamshell that I've been carrying around for the past three summers. Just recently I got three pairs of flats, including a pair of silver Jeffrey Campbells that got at least ten compliments within the first two days of wearing them, and one of my co-workers literally went out and got the same pair that day. In general, I like this place. They have cute clothes, shoes, and accessories. The clothes are pricey but the jewelry is fairly reasonable. The reason I give it 2 stars is because of how PUSHY AND ANNOYING the sales associates are. It's utterly ridiculous. One time I was in the dressing room trying things on and they continuously kept bringing me additional things to try on, EVEN SHOES AND JEWELRY. I love that this store has a mixture of designer brands as well as non designer. Marc Jacobs, Hudson, sevens, brand, house of Harlow, etc. Clothes are very cute. The store carries anything from clothes, to jewelry, to gifts for your brides maids. I love denim shopping here, they tend to have a good selection on sizes. My friend and I both purchased Groupons to South Moon Under and recently went to shop. After looking at the price tags, we went back to the sale section. We both found several things to try on. The sales girls were very sweet & helpful. We tried on our clothes and both decided on a purchase. Once up at the counter, we were informed that the Groupon couldn't be used for sale merch! (This is not like at any other place I've used a Groupon). We put our sale pieces back and decided to look around at some other things in the store. The items, while nice, are overpriced. I'm not going to pay $80 for a plain cotton sundress! I decided to use my Groupon on a pair of Toms shoes. The shoes were priced at $49.75, .25 cents short of my $50 Groupon. The sales girl informed me that I needed to buy 25 cents more in order to use the Groupon! SERIOUSLY!?!?! She was apologetic about it. The store policy is ridiculous. Instead of spending over $10 extra dollars on lip gloss I didn't need or want, I bought a little greeting card for $1.75 to get to the $50. My friend found nothing & intended to try to find something online. An extra tidbit: Employees are not allowed to purchases anything with their discount several weeks preceding Christmas because the company wants the merch to be there so customers can pay full price. What a terrible place to work. Suffice it to say, I will not be returning to South Moon Under. read more

They sell tons of high-end women's casual lines -- you name it, they probably have it. Their gifts section is great, including pieces by smaller companies that cannot easily be found elsewhere. One notable perk about South Moon Under is their extensive selection of swimsuits, which can be found year-round in the back of the store. There's also a large number of flip-flops for sale, including Reefs and Havaianas. This is a fantastic place to come if you need an outfit for almost any occasion! To sum up other reviews in a nutshell: the store employees walk that fine line between helpful and cloying. I'm never sure if the compliments they offer are genuine, or part of a sales pitch...and I think the fact that I once walked out of the store with an expensive pair of jeans that were in all honesty half a size too small leads me to believe that their praise might be more liberal than warrented in many cases. That said, they are good about starting fitting rooms for you, bringing you additional sizes/styles, calling other stores to locate a specific item, or offering advice about specific brands or product lines. As for the merchandise...it's very on-trend, so you'll either love it or hate it. Most of the outfits here are of your standard Arlington-yuppie variety, but they always have staples from nicer brands like Michael Stars and all the high-end denim lines. Their holiday dress selection is usually nice, and they are a good place to shop for (full-price) swimwear and jewelry year-round. The sales racks demonstrate how trend-heavy the store really is, as they are always full of stuff that no one in their right mind would ever wear. Basically, assume that you are going to pay full-price here for the items that you like...or sign up for their e-mail list to get coupons or event notices (like "trunk shows" with a percentage off denim or shoes or whatever). read more

I agree with Stephanie T., the customer service is terrible unless they see you pick something up and take a look at it (as if you might consider purchasing it); then they rush over and tell you how cute that would look on you (might be true, hehe) and how "you would also love this over here!" They have a great selection of casual and dressier items. Even though it's a chain, it has a boutique feel to it so it is on the pricier side. But I feel like you go here when you want a nicer outfit, not just for your random tanks & tees. They also had some cute accessories, I was especially in love with the handbag selection. I think I counted a half dozen purses I wanted to buy - I'm kind of glad they weren't cheap or I just might have bought one or two and lord knows the last thing I need is another handbag. The sales staff when I was in there were so incredibly friendly & helpful. Sometimes sales folks can be overbearing and annoying, but these girls were just the right amount of 'let me help you find what you need' and 'I'll leave you alone until you need me'. And if you are looking for a swimsuit, look here. THey had a better selection then every other store I looked at when I was in desperate need before my vacation. read more

I try not to go in here too often because when I do, I tend to leave with an entire outfit. Everytime I shop here the salespeople have been super friendly and always tell me everything looks cute, and wouldn't this top go well with that skirt, and don't you want to try on these shoes, etc... So watch out if you are easily swayed by salespeople like I am. At least I've walked out of here with cute outfits, heh. And maybe it's easier to buy everything in one go? This is a beach-themed store, but they also have a nicely edited selection of day dresses and going out dresses and top. It's all pricey, but you can find trendy dresses in the $60-$80 range, and the pieces are unique enough that you won't see everyone else wearing them. I've bought three sundresses here, a Theory black turtleneck that I love, a pair of $50 gray slouchy boots and a wide belt. See, that's why I shouldn't come here that often, heh. I called the corporate head quarters and they were very friendly and accommodating, replacing both pieces within a week. The lady I spoke too was a manager of the district and even offered to hand deliver the new piece to me where I live. So I guess South Moon Under management does have their act together, the people working at the clarendon store do not. read more

This is a great place to shop for an outfit that is different from the typical j crew wear. They have leather leggings, and great tunics or longer shirts to wear over. They also have a good shoe selection and recently Flash Tatoos. I agree with the sizing issues because when its gone its gone :( for the most part. Watch out of the sales they are great. read more

Thank goodness they realized their service before was awful. Now their service is better. Not always consistently so, but at least more so than before. The choices aren't as nice, and the quality not so good, especially some of the bags. They start to unravel after a couple of months, which is sad if you're paying 100+ for a bag that's not even big name brand. Insanely overpriced beach wear and everything else for that matter. Jewelry, jeans ($250), shoes, and the most expensive swimsuits I've seen. It's not my style of clothing (it's nice) but a more girly type of store and the quality on a lot of the items didn't seem worth the price. What's more, the service is terrible. There's nothing worse than a store full of employees that walk around and give you death stares and are no help. The customers helped me more than them. It made me hate the place even more. They do have a great and unique collection of cards, gifts and jewelry - and the prices for those items, while high, aren't as bad as the clothing prices.
