Richmond station serves as a terminus for zone 4 district line services and also as a stop for many national rail services out of Waterloo and into Surrey. You can get to Hammersmith on the district line in around 15 minutes, or into Waterloo in around 16 mins on the main line fast service, of which there are around 2 per hour. This makes Richmond very commutable. The final piece of the puzzle serving North London is the Silverlink service, which, if you can brave the crack addicts can get you all the way to Hampsted in around 40 mins. It feels like the slowest train in the world right now, although TfL are taking over management so perhaps it will improve. There are 7 platforms, 1+2 for main line services, 3+4 for Silverlink, and 5-7 for district line. I would advise skipping the ticket office and machines in the entrance hall and going to the ones on platform level which are much less busy. There is a front entrance onto Richmond High Street, and a handy back entrance onto Church Road which is much more pleasant, but floods everytime it rains. It was recently voted South West Trains 'Station of the Year 2007' in mysterious circumstances. If you're hungry, I would advise popping into Source next door and getting a take out, which you can scoff on the way into London...

Transport for London have just renamed the sliverlink service 'London Overground' and there is new trains on the way in 2008 or 2009. I personally find it to be slow but quite good for getting to Camden, King's Cross etc without going into Zone 1. There is a new Marks and Spencer where the Door shop used to be by the ticket barriers in the entrance hall. I still think Phil is right about going to Source though instead though!

Honestly, that does work well, sort of, considering that you can't jump off the District line to catch the Picadilly line. It wasn't chaos as it tends to get in the US. The whole process to getting on and off the train was a piece of cake-definitely not stressful at all. If you are trying to get to Paris, Amsterdam, or any outer cities near London, this is the place to be when needing to take a train. I highly recommend Eurostar since it is a high speed train and will get you to your next destination fairly quick. But, I'm not going to tell you about that, what I love about this station is: - the staff is so so nice, all day, every day - the train for waterloo is super convenient, in 20 minutes you're in central London - the station is surrounded by great practical shops and you can also buy magazines inside the station. Finally, when you step outside the station, there's a vintage car shop which creates a retro atmosphere, and it's nice to look at the cars while you wait for the train!

Although Oysters are accepted en-route, there aren't the facilities to top up your Oyster card and the nearest place in which you can do so is a seven minute walk away. It's for this reason that I often end up buying a more expensive day travelcard and the strange way that the machines are laid out means that I have on a few occasions ended up buying the wrong travelcard and had to pay for another one at Waterloo. However, trains from here are pretty regular and the station even has facilities for buying glossy magazines and newspapers to read en-route.

Notting Hill Gate is the perfect place to stop if you're visiting Notting Hill because it's right in the center of everything. This station was built in 1868 and can imagine what it looked like then. Many years before cars, people were commuting through London via underground rail. The place has history and it was cool to see, while you are on your way to see other places.
