My Optometrist of 50 years retired so my sister referred me to her Optometrist. The parking is limited but I was able to find a spot. This was my first visit. I had filled out the paperwork online so I just had to check in to the front desk and wait. Amanda greeted me and did a short vision test. Then Dr Darin Chun proceeded to do a thorough test on my eyes. He talked about the tests and was easy to talk to. From his observations, he recommended that I see a Retina Dr. He gave me the business card of a Dr that he recommended. I went to the front desk to pay the bill for the visit. They don't take United Healthcare for my insurance so I had to pay the entire amount out of pocket. It took about 1 hr for the visit since this was my first visit. In my car I was able to call the retina Doctor and make an appointment to see him on the next day. Overall my experience to my new Optometrist went well. The staff and Dr Chun were friendly & professional. They made me feel comfortable & not stressed out. If you need an Optometrist, I recommend that you see them. I have been coming to this eye doctor for years with my family. We loved Lawrence who I believe no longer works here, but there are also two Dr. Chun here, Albert Chun and Darin Chun (father and son), and they are very professional, and always willing to answer any questions you have! The reception service is always good as well, they are nice and will get you what you need. Never have to be shy to ask more questions about my eyes or healthcare, they will help you as best as they can. I also inquired about LASIK here. South Bay Optometry is definitely a ma and pa location as you can tell that Dr. Chun (senior) and his wife (Lisa) really care about the place and providing you the best experience possible. Their entire staff reflects their passion and the doctors are all wonderful from Dr. Yu to Dr. Chun (junior). Every time I am there, the small talk they make is more to get to know you and it's amazing that they can recall so much information when you only see them once a year. They do not try to upsell you at all here, rather, they listen to your wants and needs and ensure that everything is taken care of to your specifics. I went there to get a pair of prescription sunglasses which were gonna cost me $350 bucks I paid $175 and it took them two months to tell me they couldn't do it and they still charged me $10 bucks for the initial examination, and when I finally did get the glasses, they're botched the lenses don't even fit in the frames I so want my money back! South Bay Optometry in the city of Torrance is a very special place to go, starting with the Staff which they great you from the moment you walk into the office, they smiled at you, they pay attention and let you know that help will come soon. The Technicians are very knowledgeable, gentle, patient not rushing you and they explain what to expect which these days you don't get that often. The Staff is very well trained about Insurance covers showing you the options very accurately, helping to get my needs and my family needs. I am thrilled that I don't have to worry about anything they take care it for U.! The prices on the frames are for everyone's pockets, obviously if we choose a very high brand name frame is going to cost us much more out of pocket, in the other hand if we select something that still cover under our insurance we get them with zero payment on the frames and that is great. I know because I studied for an Infection Preventionist and this office is the super clean !! The Doctors are father and son Dr. Albert Chun and Dr. Darrin Chun. I picked up a prescription for my wife and it included a warning against purchasing glasses with anyone outside of his store, stating that Dr. Chun would not be responsible for the prescription or corrections if he did not make the glasses through his own providers. This optometrist, Dr. Chun, provides prescriptions that "expire" so that you cannot order more contacts without going back to have another exam, even if you know that your vision hasn't changed. After my wife looked at other reviews and found someone's 3-star review that stated "many 5-star reviews were a result of the doctor offering a Starbucks card", she asked the doctor if that was true. He said "I haven't done that in a long time" then he tried to backtrack and say he never did that. She caught him in a lie and he is not an ethical person. I have gone to Dr. Chun for eye exams and glasses for a few years. Things were okay until my last experience. I was having problems seeing with the glasses Dr. Chun prescribed and sold me. I went to an experienced opthamologist (an MD) and had a good exam. He told me that Dr. Chun had prescribed the wrong thing. When I contacted Dr. Chun, he said that opthamologists don't know about prescribing glasses and only treat eye diseases and that he, Dr. Chun, who is an optometrist (not an MD and has much less training) was the expert on this. This is not true and Dr. Chun simply dismissed what the MD said. I will never go back to Dr. Chun. read more

I'm happy with the service I get here and Dr. Kim is always friendly and caring. Going to South Bay Optometry has saved me $$$. I pay about $40 for the exam and dilation with my VSP insurance and my contacts are nearly free. They are very knowledgeable about VSP insurance, unlike other optometry places I've been to. (With the same VSP insurance I have paid nearly $200 for my contacts elsewhere and got ripped off). I used to see Dr. Chun and he originally said he wasn't able to order my contacts of choice because they didn't carry that type/brand. I went through several trials of other brands that didn't feel as comfortable and finally Dr. Chun was able to hook me up with the contacts that they said they didn't carry. THANK YOU! read more

My husband has been going to Dr. Chun for years! He's very friendly and caring! Based on the hubby's recommendation, I switched to Dr. Chun from Costco optical when I moved out to CA from Hawaii a few years ago. I never feel rushed here and they're always on time with appointments. Waiting room is always very neat, staff is very organized and welcoming, great magazine selection, and even a kids table equipped with toys. Since Dr. Chun was pretty much booked for my last visit, I saw Dr. Kim. She's also very friendly and caring! She recommended a new type of contacts for me since I mentioned my dry eyes. So far, I very happy with the contact brand switch. The staff even helped me choose out glasses since I haven't had an updated pair in years. Even though we have insurance that covers the eye exam and frames, this place charged an extra $40 for a retinal image (normally covered with all other exams). So, first things first: I have a phobia of anything going into my eye. Drops, contacts, that one glaucoma test where they touch a probe to the surface of your eye- just thinking about any of that stuff too hard gets me hyperventilating, and I flinch so hard that none of it's really doable. So I'd been skipping my annual eye exam for some time when I started noticing that my glasses were giving me a headache. I'd heard that there was a machine that you could use in lieu of the dilation test with the eye drops (it's called an Optomap), and after I searched for "Optomap Torrance," I found several practices in the area. This was the easiest place to get to, and I liked that they had experience with head trauma and vision therapy- as it turns out, my way-back-in-the-day head trauma has very likely not had an effect on my sight, and I don't need vision therapy at the moment, but it seems like a very well-rounded practice. The tests? Totally noninvasive. The glaucoma test with the puff of air made me jump, but it was still very doable, and the woman walking me through each of the tests was super understanding whenever I was hesitant or jumpy. She even let me press the shutter button for the Optomap, so that I could make sure to take a blink before taking the pictures of each retina. (Not only was that comforting, but it allowed me to make sure I was giving them the best possible visual of what was going on in my eyes- it's so, so nice not to feel like the problem patient!) Dr. Yu is also one of the best optometrists I've ever seen. He paid attention to everything I'd put on the forms, he was kind and understanding about my phobia (which, really, turned out not to be a problem- like I said, everything was noninvasive), and he's great at explaining things. He went through the Optomap results with me, explaining each part of my eye, what it was supposed to look like in the pictures, and how they should function, and then he followed up with some helpful tips about shopping for sunglasses and resting my eyes during computer work. None of it was condescending, and all of it was phrased really clearly. And, yes, I also got a good explanation of what was going wrong with my glasses. I cannot express how happy I am with absolutely everything at this practice (well, maybe not the price of glasses, but that part can't really be helped), and I plan on continuing to go here for annual exams for as long as I can. read more
