Got a flat on my R1 on the way home from work, right at 5PM. Tom made arrangements for a guy in a van to come pick me up, awesome! I needed an oil change so I took the opportunity to get one, along with new front and rear tires. I've been to his shop a few times to buy stuff, but this was my first opportunity to use his service. So the deal is my R1 is a 2004, not a lot of miles and well maintained, but still it's a 10 year old bike. I figured he'd change the oil, swap the tires, send me on my way, just like the last guy. I told him I thought I probably needed a full tune up, but didn't have a lot of dough to burn. He said "let me do the oil and tires, take it for a spin, and I'll let you know if it needs it." Few days later he calls, says my bike is done, doesn't need a tune. But here's the thing, it feels like he did the tune anyway! Seriously, used to stumble a bit at idle and right off the line - gone problem fixed. Used to backfire heavily when off the gas - gone problem fixed. I literally feel like he tightened every bolt on the machine. Rides like new. All I got charged for was the oil chg, tire change, and tires. In return I got what feels like a new bike. Not sure to rate this a 3 or 4. I walked in, this shop has definitely been around a long time. Dust on a lot of parts, just a good ol' motorcycle shop. Lot of stuff has been sitting on the shelf for a long time. I needed a fuel filter for my jetski. He actually had it in stock. He was able to order me a carb kit, and get it the next day. Sure, the shop isn't glossy and organized, but nice guys, and a decent place to get parts. I'll probably go back, but I wish they would spend 1 Saturday and just clean up the shop a little! read more

I started going to Tom at South Bay Cycles since 1986 when I first started riding sport bikes. The first bike I had that Tom worked on was a 1985 Honda VF700 Interceptor. Since then I have had a 87 VFR700, 86 VFR750 that Tom has done servicing work on. He's done valve adjustments to installing new tires on my bikes. For those basic maintenance work that I could do myself such as oil change and new brake pads.....I got all my parts from him. Tom has owned and operated South Bay Cycles for about 30+ years. I trust him with my bikes. He does quality work at a reasonable price. He can also order any part you need for your bike. Don't let the appearance of the dusty cluttered shop deter you from shopping there or getting your bike serviced there. Remember....never judge a book by its cover. He also does work on watercrafts too! And he has some used bikes for sale too! read more

Honda Peninsula on Mt. View had worked on my 1983 Honda V65 Magna 1100 for almost 20 years, the last repair the did was to send out the Cams and Rocker arms to Megacycle... I paid over 2 Grand and the bike started smoking after a few weeks. Tried to return to Peninsula and they "No quoted" it. Was recommended to Tom at South Bay and found out that the Cams and Rocker arms had to be re-plated.... Tom did this and the price was fair... My bike runs like brand new and am still impressed with the Job that was done. If you have a V65 or V45 ( Or really any older motorcycle ) I would highly recommend South Bay Cycles. He will be my mechanic as long as his shop is open. read more

Such mixed emotions about Tom and his store. But needless to say I was pleasantly pleased. Firstly theres a big ass german shepherd type dog guarding the door. And the whole shop is dusty and quaint. It's got that really old "shop" type environment. (for the record, I like it). I go in looking for some motorcycle oil and he sells me this "good" Redline stuff, I didn't know if it was good, or bad or if I was getting ripped off, but I do know that it was what I thought to be balls to the wall expensive (something like $14/qt) and had a bit of sticker shock. Well, come to find out, it's about $3.00 cheaper than Yamalube full synthetic, AND it has a good reputation online, not only that but SBC sells it a bit cheaper than online retailers. The owner is a great guy, maybe a little bit eccentric, but only because I'm sure it's because he plays by his own rules. The best part of all is that its conveniently located, and it was a no muss no fuss transaction. read more

I have been taking my bikes to Tom recently. Tom is particularly an expert in older bikes. You can trust him for the job done perfectly. The place looks a little dated , but Tom has got great skills to make up for it. Its one man operation but he gets the work done quickly. The prices are very competitive. I had Tom troubleshoot a starting problem that drove me nuts; we couldn't replicate the problem on this 1984 Honda Interceptor for quite some time; he gave me a good price on what effort he did put into it and when I finally returned and was able to demonstrate the starting problem, he figured that out in a very short time and took care of the problem for me. Offered me a couple of options and we got it done. His German Shepherd is awesome too. read more

Like most say , The place is old and straight to the point... You want it , he got it. if he don't he will get it ( Tom ) has the old bone yard kind of feel when it comes to bikes. He been in it for years and when i take my bikes , he is the best when it comes to price and fast. i cant complain at all. As far as i Know, this shop's been around for more than 20 years. Most of the products in the shop are ..... well aged. With most of the items collecting dust for the past how many years. I got my tires changed here based on recommendation of a couple seasoned riders in Fremont. Tom got the job done well and fast. So in the end, I prolly won't recommend you buy things here but tire mounting is fine read more

Took my 98 road king to Tom. Had a crack in the back rim. Tom got a new rim, re-laced and trued it and put on a new tire. He did a great job and his price was reasonable. Although I don't think he works on Harley's much, I wouldn't hesitate to go to him for HD service. It's great to have a mechanic and shop you can trust. read more

So far i've bought 2 motorcycles from Tom (the owner of South Bay Cycles) and gone to him for the vast majority of maintenance performed on said bikes. This guy is extremely knowledgeable about motorcycle maintenance and is as honest as it gets. I don't let anyone else work on my bikes. read more

Tom at South Bay Cycles is awesome. I've been going to him since 2004 for tuneups, parts and maintenance. Only needed to go 3 times. He's does a great job, fair price, quick turnaround time and can work on ANY bike, even my 1989 Honda VT500 Shadow. I've been going to Tom's Shop for about 20 years. Usually I let my Street Bikes sit all winter long and then they won't start in the Spring. Tom has always fixed this problem quickly and with not too much pain in the wallet. I've purchased an Arai Helmet and other gear there. I bought a Honda 50 there when my kids were first riding. Tom has even helped me sell a couple of bikes as well. I don't know anyone with more Cycle knowledge than Tom, I'll go to see him as long as he has the Shop. read more

I've been using Tom's mechanical expertise well before he opened the doors to his shop, way back to 1982 when he was the Lead Mechanic a few doors down at the local Honda Motorcycle Shop so I know he's factory trained and has proven his skills in locating difficult parts (sourced a discontinued NOS part from Canada that I needed) and has completed a fair number of repairs and rebuilds for me since then quickly and competitively. Yes, it's not an Arlen Ness shop with dramatic lighting, glistening chrome everywhere and salespeople waiting to pounce. My buddies recommended Tom for fixing a transmission problem on my almost-new 2009 TTR230, which was having trouble getting into second gear. Tom fixed it and only charged me 0.8 hours. I think this would have been a good chance for a shyster mechanic to screw me over, because you never really know about transmission problems. Tom certainly had the opportunity to contrive a more complex story and charge me a lot more. But he did not. So I think this is a good example of honesty. read more
