WOW. Came to Minnesota to visit Mall of America, but my boyfriend and I had more fun browsing this store than anything at that mall! This place has a great selection of comics, manga, figurines, cards, RP books, battle field pieces, WARHAMMER figurines, lots of DICE!!!, buttons, hats, ugh--just everything!!! We loved looking around and I ended up leaving with a new dice. They also had a great, large area for playing Magic or DnD or etc, Events. Ugh. I wish I could come here all the time! The staff was ultra friendly and helpful. Good humored. My only "complaint" is that I don't think they have video games? Not that I saw. But I hardly care because of all the cool stuff they had!!! It's a good comic book shop. What you think it is, it is. The new location is much brighter, friendlier and has more space than before. What has changed is that the comics are now more front and center with the games being farther into the store. Clever change as games and collectible card games require a longer dwelling time, making customers walk into the back a great idea. I like this place for getting comics and the supplies you need. The one real knock is that the "games" aspect is not really a focus at all. Employees vary in terms of knowledge and testing out games is simply impossible due to their size. I feel that's a bit of a disservice but it's there to profit, not make everyone happy. The evening tournaments are always packed, for whatever the game is, but it rarely interrupts you if you're sneaking in to pick a trinket or some of their soda. Speaking of, the Ski soda is fantastic. That alone is worth a trip if you go to Barnes and Noble across the streeet. It's a game store, not a "friendly local gaming shop." If you are in to comics or gaming this place is for you. They have just about every comic book imaginable and a great selection of games to choose from. The only gripe I have is that I wish they had a better collection of CCGs. Even their Magic: The Gathering selection leaves you wishing for more. They only seem to carry a good stock of the most recent set. I guess this makes sense but I don't play type 2 so I sometimes would like to find some older cards too. All in all though this is the best store in the Twin Cities for comics and games. read more

If you've seen the geek cult-"classic" film THAC0, you'll see the old location of The Source featured prominently in a number of scenes. This is fitting as the Source is a local Geek institution. I often forget how spoiled I am living in the Twin Cities. I have three gaming shops within 15 minutes drive, and a few more if I drive an extra 5-10 minutes. Of the all the game shops in the Twin Cities (well anywhere), however, The Source is my favorite. I enjoy board games, card games, and tabletop role-playing (TTRP) games and the source has a great collection and will help order anything you don't see in the shop. They also have a large collection of old D&D material--I love getting bathed in nostalgia as I flip through all the old first edition AD&D modules. They have a large selection of miniatures, both for TTRP and historical war gaming. While you can find more miniatures on-line and get better pricing, shopping on-line just isn't the same as browsing through row and row, shelf after shelf of miniatures. It is hard for me to not walk out of the store without buying at least one miniature. I'm not into Magic the Gathering or other collectible-card games, but they are well stocked and have a lively community for MTG and Pokemon. My sons play Pokemon and much of their collection was purchased here. As an aside, they have a great collection of plastic card sleeves. For just about any game that has cards, no matter how unconventional the size, you can probably find a sleeve for it and the staff will help you look up the exact dimensions so your get the correctly fitted sleeves. I'm not into comics, but they have one of the larger collections I've seen in any store. Lastly, their play area is wonderful. There always seems to be something going on. Check out the board-gaming nights where you can bring your own games, play games that others bring, or games that the source provides. It is a great way to try new games and meet new people. I've always found the staff to be very helpful. They are well staffed and the staff is knowledgeable. Make sure to get the Source Adventure Club Card. It gives you a discount on most of the their merchandise. Do they have the best prices? No. You will find better deals online. But nothing beats browsing through games and having a place to meet other gamers and try new games. Unless the price difference is huge, I try to buy at the Source to support a great, local institution--a treasure for the geek community. read more

I lost one of my two Theros pre-order vouchers ($80+tax) from The Source. Completely my fault of course, and they're unwilling to help citing how much people try to scam them. I put them in my wallet Friday morning before going to work then Ren Fest that afternoon & one was gone when I stopped in that evening. I'd ordered by phone initially but they had no record of it. A week later I was there in person wanting to verify and they let me re-purchase (though questioning whether I was lying, despite my cell phone records.) They also accidentally gave me Dragon Maze vouchers #401 and 402 which should be completely identifiable among the others turned in. But they won't hear of it - stating their vouchers are like cash or bonds (really? you can purchase a bond and there's no record of that transaction?) on top of how much people try to scam them. So I turn to the internet to leave my feedback. This feels about right honestly. Great store in terms of available merchandise and staying power, but I've always found their staff impersonal & distant. And they should fix their website already. Feeling disappointed. read more

This place always is super fun for me to check out. I am a little new to the comic book world but I know that if I ever wanted a specific suggestion, I could ask one of the knowledgeable employees here and they would be happy to help me. Source also has board games, card games, miniatures, dice, figurines, graphic novels, curios, and a lot of events that you can attend! There are Magic boosters, D&D sessions, and Family Board Game! This place would definitely be worth checking out for a cheap game session with friends or a solo session with just you and your favorite Manga. read more

The store is huge and has a large variety of books and merchandise. It is spacious and very well organized. My girlfriend was the one who wanted to check this place out, focusing on the figures. She spent an hour just walking around and looking at their figures. They also have some cool, large posters hanging around. My girlfriend wanted to buy some things but she found out that their selection online is large. The staff is very friendly. They all came by and asked if I needed any help. They dot hover over you and do help when you need it. The guy at the front desk also made some small talk with us and was very polite. read more

While still a super store that has a large selection of tabletop games, I have to drop my review a star because they no longer stock Flames of War or (as far as I could tell) other WW2 historical miniatures. I have heard that Battlefront (manufacturer of Flames of War rules and miniatures) places some pretty stiff requirements on merchants to maintain stock and prices, so the Source owners may have decided it was time to drop that line. However, it is a very popular miniatures game and it is surprising that they no longer stock FOW. :( read more

I cannot fathom the utter lack of less than 5 star reviews here. I have never been treated well at this store, from impolite service to straight out being ignored when I ask questions about the overpriced CCG cards. When using the back gaming area I have been accused of leaving a mess when I had nothing to do with it. I would not go back here, and have forgone attending anything this store has anything to do with. Overpriced, and terrible service. Anything you can buy there you can buy online, and you can get more polite service from ebay as well. read more

I only use the Source for my pull list (subscriptions) and comics, but there is a wealth of games, and many events for all different types of games and gamers out there. I was new to Dungeons and Dragons and I went here with my bf and we were helped and the sales person told me the general gist of the game and distilled it to the point where it was understandable. The selection of comics is great and I enjoy the various types who come in. I haven't been around comics since I was a kid. Looking through some I used to read, I find that many have been bastardized in the last 3 decades. My son spent almost an hour in here picking out "lucky" dice for his gaming. They actually had a group of adults at some sort of gaming table. At first I was just in the parking lot waiting. I was noticing many people leaving the store really happy. This is the new digs in Roseville, and as you walk in you can smell the fresh paint. The first thing I noticed was cases of SKI bottled citrus soda sweetened with pure cane sugar. I liked it better than Sprite. All around is retro candy, gum, and even moon pies. If you give birth to sons, be prepared to them being regulars here. One thing I liked about the gaming and overnights, you always knew where your kids were. They have bathrooms in the back, which is smart, people always browse and buy more on empty bladders. I like the new location on the frontage road, and parking is in the back. I play Magic the gathering frequently, have a fairly varied board game collection, and though I haven't played Warmachine in a while, I was spending heaps of money on new models for a long period of time. Every game store I frequent has some reason for me to go back. Level up Games? Board game selection is almost always priced better than anywhere else. Their scene for daily tournaments has been better for magic than anywhere I've seen($15 for a prerelease seems almost criminally good). Board games here were often 30% better price than other retailers. The source? Better selection maybe, but the prices were absurd. I haven't been in a Source tournament, so I can't speak for that. Want an eccentric booster? Level up is still selling Return to Ravnica for $3.99. The source had them for $7.99. Similar mark ups for other boosters. Mead hall? I can go to their website and order my cards there. It has a full inventory of what they have in stock at all times. This takes HOURS to catalog. It is simply insane that a game store does that, and I feel like it would be a crime to not take advantage of that. I buy singles here for that reason alone. Check out their website to get my point here, it's insane. Someone catalogs all of their singles. Think about how much TIME. And Tower games is my favorite. Tuesday/Saturday warmachine with the friendliest group I've met in wargaming, and weekly mtg drafts with the largest collection of level 1 and 2 judges I've ever seen. This is the store the scary good players play at. This leads me nicely into my complaint about The Source. Level up games offers a 40% cash 60% credit for magic singles, which goes up to 60%/80% when it's a card they need badly. Mead hall was nothing to cry home about to sell to. Oh well, they still have an insane buying program. Tower gives cash in hand at MTGGoldfish prices. So no guy behind the counter at the Source, I disagree. 50% Credit 25% cash is absurd. I don't think "every other store is going to give you the same deal" is true at all. It's only a matter of time for stores like this one. I can buy anything I can buy from here online for significantly cheaper, and without getting my butt out of this chair. Oh I hear you say. You need a human being to help you. You want friendly human connections. Would sort of suck if your friendly clerk was ignoring you to eat pizza behind the counter, wouldn't it? Or if all 5 of them were? This place a a mecca for people of every nerd Fandom you could possibly imagine. They have toys, comics, and even statues to please my superhero necessities, while also provide an outlet for my children through pokemon. They do a very good job of organizing events such as magic, which I also play, pokemon, for the children, and are the leading location in the Twin Cities for free comic book day. They also have a great selection of sci-fi and fantasy novels that maybe harder to come by elsewhere. Best comic book shop in Minnesota! This comic book shop is very well organized, and doesn't only sell comic books. It sells games, and collectible figurines, plus little magnets, pins, and other small items. It has a place to play games (you may reserve tables) and the workers are very friendly. This comic books shop is much better than the one I used to go to called Hot Comics and Collectibles. It is very big, and has gum ball machines by the door. read more

The Source is a truly massive one-stop-shop for all of your nerdy needs. They carry a truly astounding array of comics, tabletop games, RPGs, CCGs, collectibles, terrain and gaming supplies. They also have a large play area but its not much to write home about. While the sheer selection here is unparalleled overall, I feel that very little love is really given to their collectibles. I'm almost certain that many of the figures they sell have been there for years on the same stagnant rack. Compared to some other stores I frequent that sell the latest collectibles and series of figures, The Source doesn't seem to bother keeping up in any capacity and is fine to have a single figure display that rarely moves or gains fresh product. Also, despite coming here for years now, I don't think that a single member of the staff has ever stopped me to strike up a conversation or to ask if I needed help with anything. I can't blame them as the building is almost always packed, but I've never walked away from the Source feeling like I was given anything but the bare minimum of expected service. The prices are also almost always set at stock MSRP, which makes it hard to justify stopping in when I can get a significant discount at other Twin Cities stores or even online. However, the Source does put on some pretty great sales now and then and they do offer a paid membership that entitles you to a small discount. At the end of the day the Source is a good store to browse through if you love comics, tabletop gaming or other geeky sundry. read more

Conveniently located right off of Snelling and very easy to get to, the Source has the potential to be a one stop comic and game shop for most. It has everything you could ever want, from comics, to dice, to tabletop game books, to toys, and more. Its all priced at MSRP, so nothing is cheap, but it isn't overpriced, either. Best comics and games store in the tri-state area. All the staff are have a great knowledge on everything in the store, but many of the long term employees have specialized areas of expertise, so if the guy at the counter can't answer a very hard question, usually someone in the store can. They've been in the business for years and have contacts everywhere, allowing them to be very much in the know on what is happening behind the scenes, coming down the pipeline, etc. It is my understanding that they will buy the stock of game shops that go out of business, meaning this is the best place to find old out-of-print materials. read more

Fantastic and knowledgeable gaming and general SF store. Staff is knowledgeable, friendly, and geeky in the good way. The original store (pre-expansion several years ago) has a large variety of games (everything from traditional table top role-playing games to minatures to quick and fun card games) as well as dice, minature paints, and other accessories. The back of the room has gaming tables, and regular ongoing events. The front of the room (near the registers) has a large comics section, as well as some hard-to-find music (with special attention to local musicians) and a wide range of collectible items. The expansion has a good selection of SF books (though it doesn't compete with the two other SF speciality stores in town, and doesn't try to), an excellent collection of SF, anime, and other genre movies (everything from Westerns to miniseries.) and an excellent collection of bound comics and graphic novels. Everything from the serious to the just plain silly and fun. They've always been very willing to order things for me, or help me find that very specific title I want. read more

A first for me: I made a Yelp account just so I could post this review. I was a loyal customer for 15 years, even though the customer service was never very good. Yesterday "never very good" turned into "awful". I had a sub-$20 item I was hoping to exchange for a nearly identical item. It would have easily been a 30 second transaction, and the store would have lost exactly nothing. Instead, a clerk accused me of having opened the item and stealing part of its contents. In truth, the item they thought was missing was never actually a part of the product, which was in the exact same condition in which they sold it to me, and the contents were still in shrink wrap. By all means, I hope they enjoy their inexpensive item, since it is clearly so much more important to them than my business, which until that point measured in the thousands of dollars.
