My wife and I came by for a late-ish lunch on the the weekend, and we were happy to see the restaurant nearly full! It's not a big space, with only marginally more seating than their old location, but it was good to see it being embraced by a diverse clientele. The menu has a few dozen different options, which gave a good amount of variety without being overwhelming. Steamed BBQ pork buns are a dim sum must, as are pan fried pork and chive dumplings, and then we mixed things up a with a few new-to-us dishes. We settle on the steamed ginger dumplings, pan fried taro cakes and the more mysterious sounding "duck egg inside pork balls". It probably isn't the best way to pitch the dish in an appetizing way, but I like all those things, so it was worth a shot! It seems that green tea comes by default here, or our server has really good hearing as we debated getting some or not, so if it's not your thing, you might want to nip that in the bud. It wasn't long before our assortment of plates and steamer baskets were before us. The pan fried dumplings were a sight to behold with beautifully browned bottoms, and they did not disappoint! The crispy side of the wrapper contrasted nicely with tender and juicy interior, dotted with bits of vegetal chives. The dumplings were on the large side for pot stickers, and the grain of the filling was a bit more rustic than Chinese dumplings often are, including the others that we ordered, which we appreciated. Kee Heong's cha siu bao struck all of the right notes with pleasantly doughy and lightly sweet exteriors, and the sweet and savoury interior. There was just the right amount of sauce and filling to get a taste with each bite. The taro cakes were a new one for me, and they would be best described as being similar to a latke or hash brown, as it's another patty of shredded root vegetable. The exterior was good and crisp, although I found the interior to be a bit dry, and it was with these that the lack of sauces at the tables stood out. No soy, black vinegar or chili crisp in sight! The ginger dumplings had the perfect amount of ginger, such that they were quite gingery, but not enough to give you a burning sensation. It was a nice contrast amongst a series of very savoury dishes. Last but not least were the "duck egg inside pork balls". I vaguely knew what to expect, but not 100%, so this dish had an element of mystery to it! The vibe from the menu is very "Chinese Scotch egg", and the composition was in line with that as well, as steamed rice took the place of bread crumbs ensconcing a ball of minced pork. It seemed like it was just the egg yolk inside, but I really enjoyed the mix of egg, meat and rice, the latter of which had a subtle flavour of toasting, similar to the rice in a rice cooker that was on the edges of the pot. Kee Heong is firing on all cylinders since their return, and I hope Lower Sackville appreciates what they've got in this dim sum dispensary.

The ingredients and bread were all fine - but that's it, just fine. Definitely not worth the price - it would have been $3-$4 cheaper to get a hamburger than it was a plain turkey sandwich. It was a hit and a miss - we'll keep going back for a sweet treat but in the nicest way possible you can get a much better and cheaper lunch elsewhere.

If those don't appeal , there are a small number of standards like fish&chips, lobster roll, and poutine. My l'Acadie Fishcakes were made from salt fish (cod?) from Nova Scotia, expertly pan-fried. The portion was reasonable - though they were so good I could have eaten a third. They were served without a sauce (not needed), accompanied by house-made baked beans and marinated carrots. The sides were no afterthought either; the red beans were baked (not overbaked) in a flavorful sauce, and the carrots, thinly sliced, were sweet and tangy. The wife got the l'Acadie Meat Pie: a 1/4 portion of a round pie. The filling was the shredded meat, a blend of chicken, beef, and pork (!), seasoned with garlic and spices. This was inside what was described as a biscuit crust. Overall this was very good, not heavy like a meat pie can be, and not dry - but if you find it so there is the au jus gravy on the side. We didn't find it necessary. This pie was served with an excellent Caesar Salad. We split an order of Rappie Bites, which is a way to experience rappie pie in appetizer form. A filling made from grated potatoes and ground chicken, formed into golf-sized balls and deep fried. Interesting. I was expecting a firmer texture like a hush puppy which they resembled but the filling in these were soft and contained by the slightly crispy crust (of bread crumbs?) Unlike the bites which are always available, the pie is a specialty, available only on Sunday, and advance reservations are recommended to guarantee you can get it. I haven't had it in pie form and would maybe try it, but the meat pie was so good I might end up getting that again instead. I had a local cider to drink. Several local craft beers were available as well as wine. I don't remember if liquor was available. There were several desserts but we didn't try them. The only one specifically identified as Acadian was the Pouding Chômeur, described as a dumpling-like cake batter which caramelizes when baked, in a homemade maple sauce. Also ginger molasses cake, maple bread pudding, apple crisp, and strawberry shortcake - with the biscuits made in-house. Pan fried cod fillet was cooked perfectly, very tender and went well with the roots vegetables. It was my favorite dish here. Lobster pasta was also delicious. Fish and chips were average, definitely not comparable to some of the food truck places. Fries were dry and tasted bitter. Overall, this is a good restaurant with great food quality, good service and nice environment. I would consider revisiting if I'm in Halifax again.

First off, we talked about getting lobster on the side of the road at shacks etc, blah blah blah but as soon as we landed we headed to meet a friend who said we must try this lobster croissant sandwich at The Drift. OMG OMG OMG ! Could be one of the best sandwiches I've ever tasted but you know what was even better, the Chablis, no, the lobster pasta, no... It was the lobster fritters. They were insane ! The fritters are a bit like a conch if you've ever had that in the BVIs but they are battered so perfectly with a zesty hint of like that is so perfect, it's too hard to describe. Over the top crispy timbit deliciousness with lobster. The drift is a MAJOR win, it's along the water in Halifaxs best hotel the Muir and it's just perfect. Our trip was filled with Oysters and I have to say, each place had slightly different variations but I will NEVER say I had a better Oyster than in Halifax. If you hear me say it, just call me out because we had at least 4 Oysters each at around 6 places and they were all better than anywhere I've ever eaten in the world, almost to the point where I didn't need the sides (almost). I am so glad I visited Halifax, oh and by the way, the golf at Cabot was insane ! INSANE ! Was it better than Cabot St Lucia ? The mainlander is warm lobster spiced up on the bun, heaven ! And the crab bretoner is chilled crab, mix up perfectly with aioli, green on and a few other things. If you're near Inverness you better stop there. Ok ok ok , I'm writing all of this as I go but on the Sunday we end up at the 5 fishermen. Order the lobster, the carbonara lobster , the chowder and Oysters at every single place you go in Halifax and thank me later. I wasn't expecting to love the food this much, wow !
