Chula Vista Street Food - Beef and potato taco

It was a rainy Saturday, and although the narket crowd was a bit lighter than usual, there was a steady line at Chula Vista! Luckily, the overhanginf roof of the market kept everyone (mostly) dry. When we arrived, they were already sold out of their al pastor and beef items, an impressive feat for just their second time in New Glasgow! I ordered one Baja-style fish taco ($7) and the papas con queso (cheese fries, $8.50) with chicken added (+$6). My wife went for the taco combo $15.50), choosing chicken for both of her tacos, as well nachos for her choice of side (fries and refried beans were the other options). It was a bit of a wait with how slammed they were and they only had what appeared to be a two-person team, but the buzzer they give out with each order conveniently let us wander the market worry free. Once we had our food, we cut through the market building to the other side, where the tables were both unoccupied and still sheltered from the precipitation. My Baja fish taco was a tasty few bites - crisp, beer-battered fish, bright pico de gallo, and added crunch from some shredded cabbage. The house-made corn tortilla held up impressively well and had a nice, subtle flavour, although the chipotle mayo and guac didn't come through. Honestly, there was plenty of good stuff going on already and I feel like they're not even needed. The papas con queso were a decadent delight, with a Tex-Mex cheese sauce on crisp, skin-on fries, and topped with shredded cheese and wonderfully browned and seasoned hunks of chicken. Check out the crisp bits in my pics! *chef's kiss* On my second time here, they were even busier, but seemed to have at least another person cooking. If you plan on hitting them up at the New Glasgow farmers' market, definitely order first and then peruse the market, if there's a lineup at the truck. I went early enough that the whole menu was still available this to e, so I got the two taco combo, mixing and matching the al pastor, and beef and potato tacos, while getting refried beans for my side. The beef and potato taco said on their menu that potato chunks were part of the taco, which is certainly more traditional, but they may have run out of those, as fries were the potato product in my actual taco. They were definitely second fiddle to a generous heap of juicy, rich, shredded beef. Simply dressed with diced onion and cilantro, it was a great taco. The al pastor raised the bar even further. While Chula Vista likely doesn't have a rotating spit of pork in the truck, the bits of pork belly were wonderfully crisp, with a great mix of char and unctuous fat. Paired up with sweet bits of pineapple to balance things out, this is easily one of the best tacos that you're going to get in northern Nova Scotia. Chula Vista is doing great things in their kitchen, and are doing their culinary roots proud, and people are taking notice with good reason.

There were several new-to-me trucks, including Taco Stiles, a popular slinger of Mexican-inspired grub from the hub of Nova Scotia, Truro. They had five tacos to choose from: beef, chicken, pork, fish and veggie, as well as taco fries. At $5-6 each, they were a reasonable price and were advertised as being made with fresh flour tortillas, although corn would have been my preferred choice. We had gotten there shortly after the gates had opened so while there were 10-15 people in most lines, everything still moved fairly quickly. I ordered the Notorious P.I.G, the pork taco, and their "signature" fish taco, choosing the same types as I did at another food truck there to compare the two.It probably took 15-20 minutes from the time we got in line until when we got our food, which was quite reasonable. It was immediately noticeable that these tacos looked better - more proteins and more toppings. The fish in their signature taco is hunks of battered haddock, mixed with a pineapple sauce, lime crema and shredded cabbage. The fish was fresh and flaky and had a nice crunch from the light batter, and the sweet pineapple sauce was a tasty one. The lime crema didn't really stand out, but a squeeze of the lime slice did the trick to add some acidic contrast. The cabbage added some more crunch and helped flesh out the taco some more beyond just the fish. The Notorious P.I.G. was another winner. The meat was plentiful and had a well balanced BBQ sauce, and the coleslaw wasn't so saucy that it made the taco even messier. The cilantro I can do without and I feel like we may have thinned out the generous topping of it. My wife preferred the meat on our previous taco, but this was still a darn good taco. It's great to see entrepreneurs in Truro putting out a great product like this, especially when they come down to the city now and then so that I can sample their tasty wares. PS. They really, really need to stop the caps lock in their social media. The owner is under the age of 50, so there's no excuse for something so unprofessional.

Let me say that she loves fries, so it was a surprise to see her throw them in the garbage. The taco I had was below par. Perhaps it was a bad day or maybe we arrived too late. The beef tasted like it was sitting on a dirty, greasy grill for far too many hours. It left a horrible after taste in my mouth and just didn't sit well. People rave about this food, but I personally don't see what the fuss is about. I think that people are just too easily impressed.

The menu has some excellent variety with some clever twists on some otherwise familiar sounding dishes. We had the fish and slaw sandwich, fish tacos, and the grilled cheese. They were all absolutely delicious. My 12yr old declared the grilled cheese the best she's ever had. The fish was meaty and perfectly battered. The fish tacos had a zingy sauce and colorful mix of lettuce, black beans, and corn. It's a great stop for families as well. I'd easily drive an hour to eat at this place. They have picnic tables, a kids menu, a bouncy pad jump area, and some goats! We didn't try any of the lobster themed dishes which turned out to be a sad decision. The chef told me they catch their own lobster!! In fairness he only told me after we had eaten. Good excuse to come back. We hope this place is around for years and years to come. It's truly outstanding and worth your time (and money)!!

We arrived on the later side, and there were surprisingly few other hot food vendors at the market, so some things were already sold out. I went with the chili cheese dog, while it was chili nachos for my wife. My split dog had a nice sear from the grill, and was absolutely loaded with a hearty bean and beef chili, and marbled cheese. It was precarious eating, but the bun just made it through to the last bite. My wife's nachos were great for walking and eating. Topped with the same chill, plus jalapenos, diced tomato and bell pepper, and a melty cheese sauce, it was solid little dish! On a return visit at one of their regular weekly locations, the Bluenose Curling Club, I had my choice of their full menu this time. I was dining solo, and went a bit heavy for my meal to try a couple different items. The jerk chicken tacos ($12) were an obvious choice, and I just had to tack on the mac and cheese...in a waffle cone ($6)! Everything was ready quickly, and I was soon in the classy dining environment of my car. The tacos were very generously filled with the seasoned chunks of chicken, and a mix of diced mango, pineapple and red onion - all in soft-shell, wheat tortillas. The jerk seasoning was savoury and had a little hit of spice, although the meat itself was oddly served cold. I'm not sure if it's a choice driven by the cooking infrastructure they have in the trailer, but with the cold salsa and tortillas, it gives the feeling of eating leftovers right out of the fridge, and these tasty bites deserve better. Speaking of the salsa, I loved th bright mix of fruit, and pops of acidity and crunch from the red onion. The mac and cheese waffle cone was a novel little snack, which I eagerly agreed to have topped with the optional bread crumbs and hot sauce. The noodles were firm and cheesy, and the sweetness of the cone was an interesting contrast. Alas, the trademark crispness of the cone suffered under the heat of its delicious contents. Keep an eye on their socials and track down Here's the Scoop to get a taste of their accessible, affordable food.
