Sugar Moon Farm - Maple coffee

Charming cabin restaurant tucked in the woods in Nova Scotia, about an hour outside Halifax, that…read morespecializes in all things maple. It makes for a nice pitstop if you are driving to/from New Brunswick. They make their own maple syrup and specialize in all things maple. If you don't like pancakes, this probably isn't the place for you. Everything on the menu is made with maple. If you have the time, there is a nice mountain trail just out the front door that apparently a lot of folks hike before eating. We couldn't fit it in but I bet it would have made the experience even better. My pancakes with maple roasted pecans were good, not mind blowing, but good. My coffee with maple whipped cream was good but I typically take it black and wasn't a fan of all the sweetness. They do feature some non-pancake items like maple baked Mac n' cheese that was apparently recently on the Food Network. Also, some kind of French toast. But we all went for the pancakes. Service on our visit was not super fast but everyone was very nice and the place was very busy. They have a store with syrup, their own maple porter, and other wares. Overall we enjoyed our visit to this picturesque spot.

The add-on of blueberry compote could be a bigger scoop and I would happily pay another dollar to get more. If you go hiking on the trails in the area the breakfast is welcome stop before or after. You can buy syrup straight from the farm (or next door) here. The tour is fun for kids and might be more interesting if you go during the spring season.

Y'all ain't even ready to hear what I had for breakfast this morning: an eggs benny sandwich with…read moreHollandaise dipping sauce and a shredded potato pancake. YEAH. I said it. It's your standard Eggs Benny sandwiched between two thick slices of homemade bread (your choice of white, whole wheat or multigrain - no less!) and a bowl of some of the tastiest Hollandaise I've found in the past few months. All tucked away in an unassuming, down-home diner in Port Williams - a quick drive from downtown Wolfville! More people need to know about this! Four tables covered in business cards of diners-gone-by are set up in a space about the size of a loading elevator surrounded by antiques and collectibles of all kinds including a very important sign: 'Patience required as good food takes time to prepare.' Why so important? Well, there's only one person cooking back there. ONE. If she doesn't make it, you're not eating it. It makes for consistently hearty and satisfying meals, but it does increase your wait time. Portions are HUGE (actually, the burgers border on obscene...), everything is made fresh on site, and the prices are more than affordable considering what you get! And on that note, hit up an ATM at the corner store next door since it's all cash only!

Great little hole in the wall place in Port Williams. The sign on the wall states: Patience…read morerequired as good food takes time to prepare. That says it all. It is small and cozy. Even when it was only half full we overhead the waitress welcoming new customers with "We will get to you as soon as we can". The waits weren't long, and the food was great! I rediscovered the origins of hash browns in their culturally authentic Acadian grated potato pancakes - the size of a Frisbee. Crunchy on the outside and soft inside. Lots of potato flavour! The middle sized breakfast was huge - eggs, bacon, home fries and great homemade bread. Annnd - one can substitute the potato pancakes for home fries!!!! Unfortunately it can't get a 5 star because they were seen reusing the homemade jam from the individual servings - scrape the top, smooth it out and add more to the top. As much as I encourage good economics of not throwing out tons of jam - this isn't a great practise:-( So, I leave it to your judgement - food great, space small, cash only and great prices. I hope they survive and thrive in Port Williams.

While in the 'Nish for a visit before it was completely overwhelmed with St. F.X. cultists returned…read moreto their indoctrination, my wife and I stopped in for lunch at Justamere. Meeting a friend there, it came highly recommended on their part. It was nice to have the confirmation of a local, as the interwebs can't always be trusted (says the guy writing internet reviews...). We were luckily able to snag a spot on their bright and spacious enclosed patio! Both their breakfast and lunch menus were options when we arrived, and I was torn in multiple directions. I ended up landing on the fishcakes and salad ($18) instead of the heavier breakfast fishcakes iteration, as I was anticipating a hearty dinner and some greenery would be a bit lighter in the belly than eggs, homefries and toast. Three fishcakes were dotted with salmon, haddock and bright pops of green onion. They had a nice little crust from the griddle, and a chow brought its signature mix of acidity and sweetness to balance things out. The greens were fresh, and candied pecans, goat cheese and tart slices of Granny Smith apple added layers of flavour and texture. My wife's fried chicken sandwich ($19 + $2 sweet potato fries upgrade) was a towering mass of savoury delight. Two pieces of crispy, fried chicken was topped with creamy coleslaw, with some tartness showing up to the party care of the pickles. The SPF were good and crisp, and their chipotle mayo made for delicious dipping. Service was friendly, but needed some nudges on a busy Saturday afternoon. Big bonus points for the baked goods we took home! Ultra-chocolate-y brownies; massive, cheesy cheddar bagels; and a dee-lish-ous (bad spelling added for emphasis) cheddar and jalapeno bread. Justamere isn't just a big fish in a small pond, they're just killing it with both their hot and baked goods.
