    Red velvet cupcake
    Lesley M.

This place is good. So good I've put off writing a review because I'm not sure I can convey how much I love this place. First off, follow them on Instagram. It's artisan donut heaven. Is that a thing? Artisan donuts? They're constantly posting delicious sweets and it will drive you crazy. Their patio is the best in the city. It's beautiful, and there is a bar up there, so once you grab what you want from the bakery, you can walk up to the patio and sit comfortably. On my patio visit I had the red velvet cupcake. It was so good. I white girl can't even. Red velvet is my favourite and although it's hard to mess up, it's also hard to get that step up. If anything sweet thing could be my life, it would be cream cheese frosting. This last visit I opted to sit in the bakery and enjoy a donut croissant.. a croissnut? Coconut style, it was delicious as well. The bakery itself is super cute and cozy to sit in. (I took a photo to show you guys). They also sell loads of fresh baked bread, which I didn't realize till I sat down with my coffee and donut choice. It's hard to see anything else with their glass cases of cakes, tarts donuts, cupcakes.. you get the idea. They also have an impressive sandwich board loaded with delicious sounding options.. grilled cheese with bacon? Yuh. I'll have that. Actually, they have a lobster sandwich which I will be trying out ASAP... and you just know they're made with fresh, home made bread baked right there behind the cash. The ladies that waited on me were lovely, and as I sat down to drink my coffee, slowly slipping into a sugar coma, I observed them being super friendly and sweet to everyone else. Two tips here: Free coffee refills, and a free florentine cookie when you check in on your Yelp App. Best check in offer in Halifax... best check in offer I've ever received really... because it's made of sugar, and I have a problem.

Super friendly dude with a delicious menu. Also, handled a curveball really well. It started raining during the rehearsal dinner and he improvised and made it all work!

I love me the Nomad Gourmet…read more My first experience was at a Local Connections Halifax event linked up with Propeller Beer. Bought a ticket, got beer and NG burgers. It was beer and burger heaven for the evening. My second experience was sampling their sausages on a bun when checking out the Man Show part of the Exhibition Park Christmas Craft Fair. One thing is clear, you don't have to be a man to enjoy the tasty morsels being served up from the NG kitchen. And then this weekend I got to try breakfast Nomad style. I chose to "build my own breakfast' for $4. The way this works is you get an egg and hash browns and add on things at your choosing for extra $. I added some bacon and got the BEST BACON of my life. It was perfectly grilled and made my weekend. The egg was fried egg perfection and there were too many hash browns for me to eat. The hash browns are real local potatoes cooked on the grill and have a charbroiled taste to them. Pro-tip - NG will now be at the Halifax Seaport Market on weekend mornings as long as there isn't a cruise ship in harbour. Extra Pro-tip - I didn't try the breakfast sandwich - but people - it's homemade Belgian waffles with chicken!! One final tip - when your handsome pirate brother has a new baby the way to the new parents hearts is to bring Nomad Gourmet burgers to the hospital for lunch the day after the baby is born. That way both new parents are happily stuffing their faces with burger goodness and you get your brand new niece all to yourself! (at least until the burgers are devoured...)

And guys? Please let this review be the catalyst to get you in there. It'll be much easier than that morning was for me and you really should check this one out. Probably under the local radar based on the outdated stereotypes about their location, Alteregos is a equal parts a local hotspot for in-the-know North Enders, and a first impression for visitors staying in the connected hostel. Definitely a strong alternative feel, perhaps even bordering on grunge, this café might actually be one of the hippest that we've got and I can't help but feel like people still don't know about it. The staff behind the counter were friendly and efficient even after I ordered three lattés to go at the front of a growing line. They made great coffee with smiles on their faces and even stopped me on the way out to thank me for leaving a tip. Uh guys? YOU DESERVED IT. I didn't manage to try any of the food (again...I was running late) but the menu ranges from bagels to burritos with local ingredients, vegetarian alternatives, and unique combinations that I can't wait to go back for. Plus? The prices look like they have some of the best deals in the city - so as long as the food measures up, I may have found a new favourite!

The buffalo chicken soup was one of their daily specials, with a mix of cheesy creaminess and heat that contrasted well. A side of mac and cheese topped with Doritos (they have eight topping options!) was an indulgent addition to my meal, and that ooey-gooey cheese helped tame the spice of the soup. The noodles were supple and tender, and not at all mushy from sitting around in a warming tray all day like some spots. Conveniently, they also have a bunch of frozen soups to take home and keep for a rainy (re. too-lazy-to-cook) day. My wife and have tried several, including chicken and tomato bisque, potato and corn chowder, donair (!) and cream of mushroom, and the flavours are always fantastic! Souper Douper is doing the "simple" things right, and they bring a lot to their customers and community, one bowl of soup at a time.
