Don't be misled by the small space with mismatched formica tables, the food is fantastic, and all homemade and local. I've always walked by, but never entered. This lazy Saturday, i decided to stop in with my mother and son. Annie is a delight, seeming to know everyone in her packed cafe. It is definitely a neighbourhood joint. In fact, i even saw my own neighbour there. One of Halifax's best kept secrets, it would seem. PS, they only take cash. They do have Square, but it is completely unreliable.

Today was my first visit to Annie's Place after getting up at an ungodly hour, leading to an awkard wait for businesses in the Spring Garden area to unlock their doors. It's now located in a new spot (as opposed to the old location shown in the photos) where it has lost a bit of the exterior charm, but popping in for breakfast turned out to be 100% worth it. The space feels sort of like a little tea café from a small town, transplanted directly into the heart of Halifax - the best of both worlds in my books. Annie herself was gearing up behind the counter at 7am and we both commiserated with morning grumbles as I looked over the menu. The selection is small but mighty - eggs, toast, ham, bacon, pancakes, french toast, organic coffees, a full espresso menu - pretty much anything you could want. Plus, as some of the regulars showed off, I learned that you can go off-menu to a certain extent as long as it's a combination of the main components. I had a delicious veggie omelet that came with four thick slices of toasted homemade bread that was so good I want to go back and punch Dr. Atkin's in the face. $7 plus tax. BOOM. While I stuck around, Annie knew most of her customers by name, thanked every single one for popping in, telling the 'coffee to-go' customers that she wishes they could stay so she could make them a proper breakfast, and even joined one of her regulars for her own breakfast. It was a lovely touch that she even extended to this newcomer, making sure to ask my name and chat a bit as I settled up. It was calm and quiet between 7-8am, a perfect spot to regroup before a busy day. *Might be cash-only...I forgot to ask but didn't see any credit/debit machinery. *Celiac-friendly: Annie told me she makes gluten-free bread (available by the loaf) and has a separate toaster. She's also tried more elaborate gluten-free meals but also admits knowing when not to risk it for those with heightened sensitivities.

With such a beautiful place, its sad that they aren't more motivated. I love this place! It looks beautiful inside and out. When you walk inside, you quickly discover that it is small but very quaint. The ambiance was just perfect! All they needed to make it five stars after that was quality food, good customer service and free wireless Internet. And that's when this review takes a turn for the worse. I would rate food and customer service average. Unfortunately the free wireless Internet gets no rating simply because it doesn't exist. I asked about that to which they told me that they are too small for it to make sense for their business. The store also closes at 3pm on weekdays. The customer service was friendly. They just seemed a bit depressed. But they were friendly despite the lack of smiles and also very helpful. As for the food, I had a small muffin that was fluffy and not too thick. It had some taste to it but wasn't that impressive. I loved the decaf coffee I had however. And friends of mine who went with me enjoyed their cappuccino's. So food and drink deserve a solid, average rating. Nothing stood out however which is why I can't say they were extraordinary. It seems as though the owner of this store, Annie I believe her name is, thinks too defensively from a business perspective. She's right that the store is small, seats around ten or fifteen people, but if you aren't getting customers, don't take away from people, add more things that increase the value of your coffee shop such as free wireless Internet and better store hours. "If you build it, they will come," seems to make a lot of sense for a store like this. But for now, if you don't need Internet, which I can't imagine how you wouldn't, and you want a nice, peaceful atmosphere, this is definitely a good place to go.

I'd give here a 3.5 actually. I came on freezing Saturday in January, having to park in Park Lane because I couldn't find any available meter on the street within a block's radius. When I came in and sat down, the owner greeted me immediately, asking if I live in the area because she hadn't seen me before. So I assume there are lots of regulars here. I ordered a coffee, then while looking around, noticed the cash only sign. These days I rarely carry cash, so I had to excuse myself to go find an ATM in the area. I couldn't find one for my own bank within the block either, so gave up and picked up some items at Pete's, then drove to get breakfast on my way back to Clayton Park. Disappointing that I didn't get to try the place that day. So came back this past Saturday, parked on Sackville Street, and had cash with me. I took a two seater table by the window and Annie greeted me again, asking my name this time. I noticed the few other people there definitely seemed to be regulars. There is only seating for maybe a dozen tops, but luckily it wasn't too busy, if five people counts as busy? lol Simple little place with some random artwork, a chalkboard menu, nothing fancy. I ordered the veggie omelet for $10 and it was very filling. Took maybe 5 minutes to bring to my table. The homemade bread/buttered white toast was good, the home fries had a strong oregano flavor with onions and mushrooms sauteed on the side. I'd definitely come back here, but could be easily discouraged if it's hard to find parking.

Took me 4 years to discover this amazing breakfast spot! Cora's and Smitty's have a regular taste that any breakfast spot may have but Annie's Cafe has excellent food made with love and care! The cafe is very cosy and Annie is very welcoming! A must visit in Halifax.

What do you think of when you're heading out east ? Seafood of course ! Let me tell you... I've got…read morea new appreciation for it after my trip last week. We've had a trip planned to golf Cabot for the last few years. The texts and emails were flying delays, cancelled trips and in general , I never thought it would happen. Surprisingly, Halifax was a quick little flight from Toronto and am I ever glad we did it. First off, we talked about getting lobster on the side of the road at shacks etc, blah blah blah but as soon as we landed we headed to meet a friend who said we must try this lobster croissant sandwich at The Drift. OMG OMG OMG ! Could be one of the best sandwiches I've ever tasted but you know what was even better, the Chablis, no, the lobster pasta, no... It was the lobster fritters. They were insane ! The fritters are a bit like a conch if you've ever had that in the BVIs but they are battered so perfectly with a zesty hint of like that is so perfect, it's too hard to describe. Over the top crispy timbit deliciousness with lobster. The drift is a MAJOR win, it's along the water in Halifaxs best hotel the Muir and it's just perfect. Our trip was filled with Oysters and I have to say, each place had slightly different variations but I will NEVER say I had a better Oyster than in Halifax. If you hear me say it, just call me out because we had at least 4 Oysters each at around 6 places and they were all better than anywhere I've ever eaten in the world, almost to the point where I didn't need the sides (almost). I am so glad I visited Halifax, oh and by the way, the golf at Cabot was insane ! INSANE ! Was it better than Cabot St Lucia ? Nope, but I give Cabot St Lucia a 9.8 and I give Cabot Cape Breton a 9.6. STOP right there ! I had the crab shack , I had the crab shack and oh my gosh was it good. Just outside Cabot is the best little shack with the freshest little sandwiches on fluffy buns. Check it out right here- get the mainlander sandwich and the crab bretoner. The mainlander is warm lobster spiced up on the bun, heaven ! And the crab bretoner is chilled crab, mix up perfectly with aioli, green on and a few other things. If you're near Inverness you better stop there. Ok ok ok , I'm writing all of this as I go but on the Sunday we end up at the 5 fishermen. Order the lobster, the carbonara lobster , the chowder and Oysters at every single place you go in Halifax and thank me later. I wasn't expecting to love the food this much, wow ! If you're there on a Sunday, hit Durty Nellys. In my Opinion it's the best pub in the world- yep ! See ya next week :)

For our first of two breakfasts, we went down to the restaurant itself. We'd been for brunch once before a few years ago, and it's still as subtly elegant as ever, with the warm, light-toned wooden ceiling and accents, mid-century modern furniture and airy views of the Queen's Marque courtyard. I was eyeing up both their version of the Monte Cristo and the banger and hash, and decided to split them up over our two visits. Drift being Drift, this wasn't your standard Monte Cristo, loaded up as it was with quality ingredients like house-smoked turkey, confit pork belly, local gouda and brown bread French toast. The meats were wonderfully tender and flavourful, and the melted gouda brought its lightly salty sharpness. I was impressed by the thick, brown bread as it held up extremely well to the French toast treatment, and its notes of molasses doubled down on the sweetness of the maple syrup drizzle and dusting of confectioner's sugar. All told, it was a delicious mix of sweet and savoury. The sandwich also came with some cursory fresh fruit, a roasted tomato, and some criminally under-billed potatoes. Denoted simply as "grilled potatoes", I was just expecting some chunky home fries, but it was much fancier than that, more along the lines of a potato pavé, with delicately laminated layers of potato in a crisp rectangle of potato-y goodness. For our second breakfast (from Drift, the following day, not the hobbit-style second breakfast), we splurged a little more to get room service and make our check-out process a little easier. With just a half hour lead time, we had a rolling table brought to our room and unfurled in front of our window which overlooked the boardwalk and harbour. The banger and hash was a delicious mash-up of British and Nova Scotian food. The aforementioned grilled potatoes took the place of the "mash", while two, house-made sausages filled the other titular roll. The sausages had crisp casings, and the juicy interiors which had a pleasant , rustic grain to them. As much as I love a basic breakfast sausage, these were definitely next level! The dish didn't stop there though, as it had two, perfectly poached eggs, a hefty dollop of sweet and savoury baked beans, and for that Nova Scotian component, some green tomato chow to help cut through a very rich breakfast. We were also given two complimentary canelés, topped with groundcherries. Kudos to Drift's baker, as this was probably the best canelé I've ever had. The exterior was darkly caramelized without a hint of burnt taste, and was impossibly moist and airy on the interior. While this was a working staycation, our breakfasts at Drift were a wonderful component of a couple days spent (occasionally) relaxing and enjoying some of the treats that our city has to offer.
