Went produce shopping in Chinatown this morning looking for daikon and lemon because have you ever…read morehad a dish at a restaurant you wanna replicate at home? Especially if it's something so simple? That's me to a T. So I wandered around Keakaulike Mall looking for any vendors that had both items I was searching for. Either the daikon was way too big for what I needed or they only sold one but not the other. The last place I stumbled upon was Chan's Market. They had just the perfect sized daikon I needed plus they had lemons too. You have to go inside the store to pay. Honestly it's not the cleanest looking place but I'm not here for the ambiance. Just a quick pay and go. Paid only $1.05 for both items so I'm a happy camper. Don't forget to bring your own recyclable bag because the produce bags becomes your take away bag. I made oroshi daikon to go with my BBQ chicken. I still need to figure out how to cut the bite down because it turned out spicy. Trial and error I guess. If I had to take a guess I think I need to buy the whopper sized daikon. Review for Yoshitsune forthcoming...the place that gave me inspiration.

The lines weren't too long and the entire process of ordering and getting our food was fast and efficient. The lady who helped us was really nice. We got the ahi tuna plate (the best dish in my opinion). The tuna was well flavored and cooked to perfection in texture. The next fav was the Kailua pork, steak and then garlic noodles with shrimp. The shrimp and noodles was good but tasted bland. All the dishes came with a pretty big portion. My only small issue was that they said the steak had no dairy but it did either the steak had butter or there was some cross contamination. Not great if you have dairy allergies. Aside from this, such yummy food found here.

Fields of Aloha provides fresh local fruits and vegetables. They are harvested on the north shore and delivered in the form of 'boxes' to certain locations on Oahu each week. In an age where supporting local is not as easy as it should be, this is a no-brainer. The box is rather large. If you have seen the 'hefty' box that papayas come in...that's what you receive...a papaya box. The box comes with about 7 to 10 pounds of local fruit and veggies. You dont get to choose your produce, you get a wondrous box of what's in season. I have had everything from dragonfruit to papayas to watermelon, to Japanese pumpkin kabocha squash, to Opo squash, and even herbs (mint and basil). There are always staples inside as well, like cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, eggplant, and potatoes (regular and sweet) and zucchini. The coolest part of the box is you get to play 'Iron Chef'. Now that you have your box, you get to come up with new and exciting dishes to make! It's so much fun! Definitely better than buying the same vegetables over and over again! There are quite a few pick up locations but I have picked up boxes at two locations, Kakaako farmers market and Niu Valley shopping center. Both locations are easy and efficient. Though, if you go to the Kakaako location, you can also stop by the farmers market to see what additional veggies and fruit they offer, because Fields of Aloha also has a stand there. The best part of Fields of Aloha is their employee, Paka. He usually handles the pick up at Niu Valley and the stand at Kakaako. Paka always greets you with a smile and he makes sure the process is easy and efficient. Ever notice how a great employee can make your day and also put you in a good mood? That's Paka. I will continue to use Fields of Aloha during and after the pandemic, because of the quality, the customer service and the ability to buy local.

My friend in Makakilo raves about her local open market so when I looked up where there was one near me, this market came up on the list. I was pretty excited to go the first time, but it was kind of a let down when you realize it's just one guy. I guess it's not intended to be very fancy. I have purchased my weekly vegetables here a couple times. The variety is limited to cabbage, onion, lemon, tomato, carrot, chili pepper, bell pepper and some other staples. They don't have fruits. But the guy is nice and it's nice to see people from the community stopping in the early morning before work to get vegetables. Close friends (if you come here enough times) and deals can be felt here on a daily basis. It's a very definitely small scale operation that takes up very little room and scores up many delightful fruits and fresh produce for your daily needs. It's not much of a theatrical production, as the larger farmer's markets in various spots around urban Honolulu and across Oahu, but there is some value associated here. It's your usual cadre of local residents that want to enjoy the fresh produce that comes with farmer's markets, but want to be within the reaches of Kaimuki town. The Kaimuki Open Market could be categorized as a small niche of people bartering and selling among themselves, but why do it in the public eye? Not sure about that, but I guess it's the way it is here and buying among friends and family is like that, along with passers by who are also looking for a great deal as well. The overall experience here was definitely pleasant, but weird at the same time. I'd come back here more, if the farmer's market either at Kapiolani Community College did not have the stuff I need. The Kaimuki Open Market is neatly tucked away in the side streets of Kaimuki town, located on 12th Avenue across the street from the First Hawaiian Bank - Kaimuki branch. They usually operate on Saturdays, Is use you where I see them. Not sure if the do this open market on the week days, but I will be surprised if they do. If they do, it will probably during normal working hours. Usually cash will be king here, since I do not believe they take credit cards at all. Luckily there is a major bank next door or across the street, namely First Hawaiian Bank and Bank of Hawaii. Parking can be plenty for all, if you use the municipal parking lot but you would have to pay money. There's always street parking nearby but there will be some walking involved to get here. Of course, there is no admission fee, so that's always a good thing. Sometimes I will see someone new in the neighborhood buying stuff from here and it's always gratifying to see familiar faces periodically on the weekends. While you won't find vendors that will cook up a tasting meal, you just find a small assortment of produce that is fresh and compatible with whatever you are cooking / preparing for the day or week. Take this opportunity to venture out in your comfort zone and come here, as the alternative to supermarkets, Costco, and other nearby localized farmer's markets in and around town. Since I do live nearby, I thought it would be a nice gesture to check things out here on a recent Saturday and hit up the Kapiolani Community College mega farmer's market later on. For me, it was the perfect opportunity to get what produce I needed for work and home, while being quite close to home really. I can shop here on the weekends and know that I can get the best price and deal for my hard-earned dollar, as well as seeking other deals for friends and family by shopping here. While Whole Foods and various supermarkets are are very much in the Vinicity, shopping here at the Kaimuki open market can be adventurous and be out of your comfort zone. It's always nice to look at first. You'd probably would find something you're looking for, but for a better deal. Support local! B+ *1400th review and 100th first to review on Yelp! Yeh!! :)

Located on King Street at the corner of the traffic light intersecting Kekaulike Street, this produce stand has a large selection of items with 2 shopping areas: indoors and outdoors. Price-wise I find this place cheaper than others but the quality isn't that great. I'm not sure the exact reason but maybe it's because the outside shopping area is "exposed" - - the heat and exhaust from the heavy traffic on King Street play a factor? I've also noticed the change of staff and owners recently. The middle-aged female Asian cashier used to be at my go-to place in Kekaulike Market and she now works or owns this stand. If you're looking for a great selection with bargains and don't mind average or below-average quality, this is the place for you. In the outdoor shopping area near the cashier, against the wall you will find "discounted" items where fruits and veggies are pre-bagged for quick sale. They're still in pretty good condition but will have to be consumed within a day or two. This place is CASH and does accept EBT cards.
