However, be aware that that's exactly what it is: a comic book store. Many times, a comic book store will also have a lot of other nerd toys like gaming supplies, figurines, playing cards, and things like that. Limited Edition Comics isn't like that. They're a comic book store through-and-through. They have a very small selection of tabletop accessories for Star Trek and Star Wars games as well as a couple of board games to choose from, but that's about it. Everything else is comic books, and they definitely have a huge selection. As I'm not a comic book fan, but instead, I enjoy the "nerd supplies" like the figurines or tabletop accessories, this was a bit of a let-down. It's a pretty small store, and as far as I can tell, the playing tables are downstairs while the upstairs is the shopping area. Also, to add to the weirdness, the upstairs also seems to include a barber shop. There were people getting their hair cut while I came in. There were also a bunch of people having friendly conversations, so it seems like there's a group of people who probably come here regularly. Since they have tables and whatnot downstairs, I'm assuming they probably host local tabletop gaming or card game tournaments. Nothing was going on at the moment as far as I could see, but it did look like they had space downstairs. From the prices of items I compared to Amazon, their pricing is usually within $2 of what Amazon wants, so very fair pricing. Definitely worth purchasing locally. Wasn't greeted or really acknowledged while in the store. It's a pretty small store, so it felt a bit awkward to not be acknowledged, but it did allow me to browse in peace. No one was outwardly rude or giving me "the outsider!" looks, though, so it's possible that greeting customers is not usually within their usual procedure. Parking here is standard parking for a downtown-ish area. There is a small free parking lot down at the base of the hill of the street, but it's a small walk to get to the store. You also could park curb-side if you wanted to, but I didn't find it a problem to walk to the store instead. Final thoughts: If you love comic book stores, you'll probably enjoy Limited Edition Comics. It's a great comic book store, but don't expect a lot of the other "nerd toys" that usually come along with comic book stores. I probably won't come back, but that's mostly out of personal preference for something other than comic books. Not a bad store, though.

Directions and Hours: This store is ONLY OPEN the first Thursday through Saturday of every month. The first day needs to fall before the Thursday of that week. (For example, if April started on Friday, the store wouldn't be open until the proceeding week. If April started on Monday, it would be open that week). The store is located BEHIND Simpson's Furniture on Main Street. It's a bit tricky to find, but you'll end up seeing a tiny sign on the property. Turn onto E 23rd street, and even when it turns into gravel, KEEP GOING. Go until the gravel "ends" then turn right. You'll quickly see Hatchlings and Hen's signage. The store itself is down the driveway. Long Version: This is a neat, home-run type of store. As far as I can tell, it seems to be a small shop in a workshop. The directions above will help you find it. The area feels like shopping a garage sale - but in a cute and fun type of way. No bathrooms or anything because of that. Hatchlings and Hens sells a variety of neat, repurposed and vintage-esque type of items. It looks like a lot of items were repainted or cleaned up in order to be sold, and the owner does a surprising job of finding fantastic sets. For example, there was a kitchen table with a matching 4 chairs available for purchase (only $175 for the set! I would have bought it if I needed a kitchen set). There were also other sets like matching bird decor or awesome wall art. There was some industrial-type of furniture and whatnot too - as well as industrial salvage that might help you out if you were looking to do some DIY for yourself. I didn't end up purchasing anything today, but I plan on coming back in the future. The owner was super friendly, and I really did fall in love with a coupe things that I can't quite think of a place for at the moment. I'm looking forward to seeing how the stock and everything changes from month-to-month.

It's a wonderful resource for the community. History: James Hearst was a poet and professor at the local university, the University of Northern Iowa. He donated his house to the community, and the James and Meryl Hearst Center for the Arts was born. His poems are classic to the Midwest and Iowa, focusing on nature and farming. Exhibits: The art exhibits change out frequently, and often feature a guest exhibit, as well as some from their own cache. Gary Kelley is a local favorite. He is an illustrator for children's books. If you are familiar with his work, it's not hard to pick out his pieces. Price: None! The art museum is free and open to the public, as is their events. Of course the workshops and classes have a small fee for supplies. Garden: They have lovely gardens in the back during the spring/summer/fall months. You can even host a small wedding there! The garden also contains art sculptures that you can walk around and view. The iconic art sculpture out front represents a cyclone. The woman who was running the shop was shuttling clothes that I had pulled off the rack into my fitting room throughout my shop and was just so friendly and exuberant, while also giving me the space to shop and peruse at my own pace. I ended up getting a staple kind of black/gray denim button up shirt that will be great for the fall and spring weather and for layering throughout the colder months! I also got two sweaters that had a fun corgi print on them to gift to my corgi-loving friends! The pricing was reasonable here compared to what I normally associate with boutiques as well (these sweaters/denim jackets all averaged in the $40-50 range), so I really appreciated that.
