Everything is really clearly and nicely organized, and it was ridiculously easy to find exactly what I wanted. Attached to here is a large room (looks like they bought out the store next to this store in the strip mall) with lots of newer tables and chairs for game nights. Looks like Dark Vassal Gaming focuses pretty heavily on trading card games and trading card game accessories. I didn't see any board games or figurines or D&D stuff. While they were already sold out of the set we were looking for, the employee was super friendly and helpful and had a very extroverted personality. We ended up finding a different set we hadn't seen before, and we left feeling a bit jealous that this wasn't a place that existed a couple years earlier when I lived in the city. Everything we were browsing seemed to be sold at or pretty close to MSRP. Didn't see any price gouging.

It's a wonderful resource for the community. History: James Hearst was a poet and professor at the local university, the University of Northern Iowa. He donated his house to the community, and the James and Meryl Hearst Center for the Arts was born. His poems are classic to the Midwest and Iowa, focusing on nature and farming. Exhibits: The art exhibits change out frequently, and often feature a guest exhibit, as well as some from their own cache. Gary Kelley is a local favorite. He is an illustrator for children's books. If you are familiar with his work, it's not hard to pick out his pieces. Price: None! The art museum is free and open to the public, as is their events. Of course the workshops and classes have a small fee for supplies. Garden: They have lovely gardens in the back during the spring/summer/fall months. You can even host a small wedding there! The garden also contains art sculptures that you can walk around and view. The iconic art sculpture out front represents a cyclone. Shop: There is also a small shop inside where you can buy items and art from local artists. This art museum is a gem to the community. Be sure to check it out!

Very friendly owner, and she collects/redesigns/repaints the items herself. Definitely lots of cute stuff here. Directions and Hours: This store is ONLY OPEN the first Thursday through Saturday of every month. The first day needs to fall before the Thursday of that week. (For example, if April started on Friday, the store wouldn't be open until the proceeding week. If April started on Monday, it would be open that week). The store is located BEHIND Simpson's Furniture on Main Street. It's a bit tricky to find, but you'll end up seeing a tiny sign on the property. Turn onto E 23rd street, and even when it turns into gravel, KEEP GOING. Go until the gravel "ends" then turn right. You'll quickly see Hatchlings and Hen's signage. The store itself is down the driveway. Long Version: This is a neat, home-run type of store. As far as I can tell, it seems to be a small shop in a workshop. The directions above will help you find it. The area feels like shopping a garage sale - but in a cute and fun type of way. No bathrooms or anything because of that. Hatchlings and Hens sells a variety of neat, repurposed and vintage-esque type of items. It looks like a lot of items were repainted or cleaned up in order to be sold, and the owner does a surprising job of finding fantastic sets. For example, there was a kitchen table with a matching 4 chairs available for purchase (only $175 for the set! I would have bought it if I needed a kitchen set). There were also other sets like matching bird decor or awesome wall art. There was some industrial-type of furniture and whatnot too - as well as industrial salvage that might help you out if you were looking to do some DIY for yourself. I didn't end up purchasing anything today, but I plan on coming back in the future. The owner was super friendly, and I really did fall in love with a coupe things that I can't quite think of a place for at the moment.
