The absolute best indie bookstore I've ever visited. The owner is kind, funny, and has so many good recommendations. The selection is incredible given the size of the store, and we found books for ourselves, our teenager, and as gifts. They host book clubs and other events and you can't beat the location in Newbo. I have saved the best for last: there's a bookstore cat! When I went in a few weeks ago, I picked up a book called "The Rabbit Hutch" just to see what it was about. The owner told me a little about it, said he enjoyed it, and recommended it. His recommendation was so compelling that others shopping in the store also grabbed the book! He was so kind and appreciative to everyone who bought books and the best part is ... the book is just as described and a great pick! It wasn't a generic recommendation and his love of reading shows. Meh. Whether it was a cologne or incense or what, something was overwhelmingly smelly and obnoxious. The selection was poor and geared toward NYT bestseller lists, and the store's layout isn't ideal for browsing. Disappointing because I'd enjoyed a previous trip and indie bookstores are important. Doing some research on an upcoming trip to Europe and I wanted to support a locally owned small business to purchase a travel guide. I knew the title of the book that I wanted, and having walked by the shop the evening before I decided to stop by on Friday at the 10AM opening time. The shop indeed is a small store located in the New Bohemia section of Cedar Rapids, and it fits the neighborhood well. The shop is very neatly organized, and the atmosphere is very homey, harking back to the time of customer service with a smile. The shopkeeper was more than happy to look up the book that I wanted, and said that he would give me a call when the book came in, scheduled for Tuesday. We chatted for a while afterwards. (In a previous review there was a complaint that the shopkeeper was conversing with a non-purchaser. If someone had walked in during our chat they might assume I was not buying. Indeed I was a buyer, so don't jump to conclusions). The book came in as scheduled, I received the phone message and went happily to retrieve the book. Expect to pay full price, but with such service and knowing that you support a local owner there should be no complaint. :) read more

My Son and his friends from his Day Hab Program visited this store. They were treated poorly and made very aware they were not welcome... The owner was rude and wouldn't answer any questions from the group. Another group of Specials from a different agency came in as well. They were treated poorly too. The amount of coaching, talking and reassuring it takes to get the individuals to go into their community and interact with people is ongoing and a piece of their daily routine. More often than not, the individual has no friends and develops a love of books that helps foster their imagination and assists in building friendships through common interests. Remind yourself why you opened this store in the first place. Your love of books and wanting to share that with others. Let's do better and embrace community inclusion fully. Next Page Books is a smaller store with new select titles. It sells basically what's on the New York Times Bestseller list. The name of the store implied it was a used bookstore, as I interpreted "Next Page Books" as such. However, it turned out to be a full priced limited title new book store. The staff was not attentive. When I walked in I was never greeted or when I left the store. I was never asked if I needed help to find something, even as I showed my facial frustration face like where is something... The one staff member was quite engaged in a friendly conversation with a non-shopper. Therefore, I took my business somewhere else. gave it two stars just because I did like the set up and presentation of the store and the location. read more

Next Page Books is a fantastic store in the Cedar Rapids NewBo district. It has a wonderful selection of fiction and nonfiction books. The space is beautiful, warm and inviting. The staff members are the friendliest you will find in the neighborhood. Often times I will go in there, browse their book selection and chat with the staff for hours. If I am interested in a book that is not in their inventory, they are able to order it and get it in a matter of a day or two. There's no other place that I would go buy books. read more

Drawn in by the sign, "Independent Bookstore," this little delightful shop did not disappoint. While small, the selection is sure to satisfy a variety of tastes being packed with merchandise without sacrificing that cozy vibe. Personally, I'm more of a staff person, myself. The gentleman at the counter, presumably the owner, was exactly what one hopes for in a shop attendant; he was pleasurable, helpful, and made me feel extremely confident in my purchases, including "Thunder & Lightening: Weather Past, Present, Future" by Lauren Redniss.
