I made a visit back to Sotto Luna for the first time after a decade, wondering all the while - 'Will it be as good as I remembered?' In short, most things are. Some things have certainly changed. Since last I visited, the restaurant has moved to a new location, but the interior is still warm and cozy while the service remains as friendly. And you've got to pay respects to a place that delivers a whole head of roasted garlic with warm (almost too hot to touch) bread. Familiar Italian favorites are done extremely well here. My picky father enjoyed his linguine pescatore - a healthy serving of mussels, clams, shrimp, and calamari nestled in a bed of pasta in red sauce. I ordered a classic spaghetti and meatballs, and the sheer size of the meatballs drew audible gasps from around the table. Rigatoni a la vodka? Delicious. Other riskier orders didn't fare so well. Someone took a chance with a shrimp ravioli special, and it arrived in a sauce whose texture could only be described as 'gloopy'. Two from our party ordered the pollo campagnola sauce (boneless chicken with sausage, peppers, potatoes, onions and flavored with garlic and rosemary), and these plates were also received lukewarmly. The key to success here seems to be sticking to the tried and true. As mentioned, service is impeccable. We were checked on frequently, with water glasses kept diligently full, and needs met quickly (and sometimes anticipated by our attentive server). We just had our daughter's baby shower at Sotto Luna and cannot say enough about how great our experience was. Cathy, the owner was extremely warm and welcoming. When we walked in just to see the place, she stopped what she was doing to talk to us and answer all of our questions about the event. She was so nice and patient throughout the process. The service was amazing thanks to Marcos and Emmanuel and the entire staff who went above and beyond from start to finish to make our daughter's special day run smoothly. My family and our guests loved the food and the place and had a lovely time! I would highly recommend Sotto Luna to anyone looking to host an event or just go out to dinner, - we also ate there prior to the shower and it was wonderful! read more

2.5 stars would be more appropriate. $19 for a drink, vodka with ice. Drink was essentially a shot of vodka. Nice markup on four drinks for a party of four. Bartender then stirred drink to melt the ice to have it appear more abundant. Ordered pizza for the table but dough was cardboard-like; odd considering their bread was quite fresh. Ordered off the fixed price menu. Caesar salad with fish which were both flavorable and plentiful, only exception very small serving of vegetables. Ice cream was supposed be vanilla and served with chocolate syrup. Ice cream had no flavor and a barely a drop of chocolate syrup. read more

Waited way too long to be seated even with a reservation. Once seated had to wait for place settings and menus. Waiter was not very friendly and did not really acknowledge when we told them we had food allergies. We did not order appetizers and had to ask quite a few times for bread and butter. Very cozy lovely place. The service was great. I've been going to their old location for years and I do love this new location even better. We had the special Beet Salad loaded with green apples, arugula, walnuts and goat cheese and it was very good. My old favorite is always the Stuffed Artichoke and it was delicious. The half moon shaped Ravioli special with shrimp was excellent. Already want to go back for that dish again. The Cacio Pepe, the fresh spaghetti is always the best. The Gamberie Scampi, grilled shrimp with white wine and lemon sauce is a classic. Must try the Napoleon Cake for dessert. read more

The service was excellent. Our waiter was warm and friendly. That accounts for the two stars. The food was very overpriced and mediocre in quality. We tried the Caesar salad, which had a bland, creamy dressing. Fried zucchini was also bland, could have used some seasoning. I ordered halibut, which was way overcooked and tasted like cardboard. My wife and her friend ordered bronzino and flounder Franchese, which they said was meh. Even the biscotti tasted like it was a week old. We enjoy a good Italian meal wIth the famiglia and Sotto Luna is just the place. We were able to get a table for us on Xmas Eve last minute reservation and the place was packed. Great food, good friendly service, comfy decor thou they def need acoustic panels ASAP in there. Affordable meal for three clocked in at around 150.00 so it's a great option for families. The dishes we ordered were well prepared and given the rush were pretty good. I rate my spots would I go there again? Definitively my neighborhood go to spot. It's a bit more elegant than the La Parma cantina and smaller than 388 -- two other excelente ristoranti on same street a few blocks apart not to mention the great takeout D'Angelos. Sotto Luna is the perfect example of why people should give local restaurants a fair shake. Located in a strip mall sandwiched next to a CVS and Starbucks, it would be really easy to overlook this place, and that would be a mistake. The decor is clean and bright and the menu has a lot of standard Italian fare. The meal started off with some complimentary flatbread with roasted garlic (tasty) and we started out with a caesar salad (well dressed and not overdone). Entrees were good - chicken with sausages and peppers was flavorful, lasagna was delicious, meatballs were succulent. Dessert was also really good - complimentary homemade biscotti was excellent. Prices are about what you might expect for a mid-level Italian restaurant (about 20-30 bucks a pop). Service was also really good the day we went and our server was top notch. Thumbs up. read more

Dined here for the first time since they changed locations. Very happy with the table spacing and luckily we were seated at a corner booth. The bread was delish and so was our eggplant meatball appetizer. We both enjoyed our veal marsala and artichoke entrees. The one negative is that our server didn't write our orders down, committing all to memory. He came back to confirm our wine order, same with our entrees. Sotto Luna has been one of my favorite Italian spots for many years. The food is excellent and it's a cozy sized restaurant with a homey Italian vibe. The staff is always very welcoming. When seated you're given a basket of delicious bread and a roasted garlic. It's so yummy! My favorite is the Chicken Parm. I can even go as far to say that it's the best Chicken Parm I've ever had. I've eaten in the restaurant many times, but I also used to take out quite often. My mom always orders the Scaloppini di Vitello al Portobello. It's also awesome! That's a veal dish with a light brown mushroom sauce. Almost similar to a veal marsala, but the sauce is a little bit thicker. I do miss Sotto Luna and the excellent food they serve. I stumbled upon this place randomly some years ago and my wife (then girlfriend) absolutely fell in love with their 'Fidelini Marinara,' or angel hair in marinara sauce, a dish so commonplace, that it's seldom given the love and care that it rightfully deserves. Since then, we've frequented this restaurant any time she has a major craving for great pasta. On our most recent visit, I ordered the grilled chicken parmigiana with a side of vegetables. It's not often that an Italian place offers a parmigiana dish that isn't fried and draped with cheese. I was intrigued and ultimately impressed. There were two thinly sliced pieces of chicken on top of one another with just enough sauce and a layer of cheese that was neither lacking nor overpowering. The dish came pipping hot and was served on a plate that was well warmed so as to maintain the temperature of the dish throughout the meal. Now this is chicken parm done right. I was unfortunately, not so dazzled with the side of vegetables, which came lukewarm and oily. I probably should have gone with a side of pasta instead. Luckily, the delicious pita bread with freshly roasted garlic plugged the empty hole in my heart for extra carbs. A bread basket (plate) done well at any restaurant really goes a long way to win this diner over. My parents ordered pasta pescatore and rigatoni a la vokda. Both were quite satisfied with their dish. The service is consistently friendly and I also like that the restaurant is rather quiet. read more

Looks can be deceiving. This place doesn't look all that appealing from the exterior - tucked away in a random strip mall between a fresh fruit marketplace, a Starbucks and a CVS. However, this unassuming place led to the most pleasant dining experience. Firstly, let's comment on their free bread! Warm, flat, pita bread with a whole roasted garlic!?! Whoa that's a first! Just smear that garlic on the bread like butter, and you're golden. I had the linguine vongole with white sauce, and it's better than most Italian eateries in the surrounding area. My dad got the pork chops and he would not stop raving about it. Both dishes had the most amazing sauces, which is always a plus since I love dipping my free bread in it. He went to talk to the manager/head waiter in Spanish for 3 minutes about 25 feet away. Excuses galore... we have 3 times the business, we'll have a table soon, waiting for a check, holding you a special table, just another 5 minutes... I had the pleasure of finally going to Sotto Luna in Albertson for dinner yesterday evening. There were 7 of us for dinner. I wish I would have taken photos of the dishes. From the minute we arrived, we were warmly welcomed and seated right away. Water and bread (with roasted garlic to spread) was served. We started with a Margherita Pizza as an appetizer, which was perfect and tasted homemade. For individual entrees, we ordered the Rigatoni with chicken meatballs, Chicken Campagnola, Manicotti, Chicken Parm, Veal chop, Cacio Pepe, a stuffed chicken special. Food was all excellent!!! They have a very generous pour with a glass of wine. Too full for dessert. A small plate of biscotti at the end. Wait staff were very personable and professional. Prices reasonable. Decors. Sotto Luna is your typical little Italian eatery. The main dining area is fairly dim-lit, while tables closer to the window are brighter with the natural light. Tables are covered with white linen cloth with fairly comfortable black ladderback side chairs. Flavors. The pecan goat cheese lettuce salad was a bit meh. The red lettuce was extremely bitter and in greater proportions than the green lettuce. There was too much lettuce compared to the extra flavors of pecans, orange, and cheese, which seemed arbitrary and unfocused with the rest of the dish. The prosciutto mozzarella pizza with sundried tomatoes was fresh out of the oven, and absolutely delicious. The flavors of prosciutto and the sundried tomatoes worked well together, and the amount of mozzarella cheese was just right. The crust was crispy, but still delicate to the mouth. We were a fan of this pizza alright, and we look forward to trying Sotto Luna's other varieties. Presentation. Mostly neat. Not much decor that can come with a pizza -- it was presented on a plate, you know, standard protocol. The salad looked a bit dreary though, probably due to the lack of pecans compared to the lettuce. Service. The waiters seemed very engaged with their restaurant, very attentive... to the point that it can be a bit overbearing and awkward. For instance, a young waiter placed our pizza down. Typically what happens next is that the waiter walks away -- however, this one decides to stand there for another 30 seconds. We have no idea why he is just standing there, so we wait, and then he walks away. Sotto Luna, your restaurant has much potential, but your service needs to be a little more formal and your staff needs to be better trained. The Verdict. Pizza goodness. Sotto Luna, your pizza was delicious -- we loved it, and we will be back for more. However, for bigger and better things, you need to work on your service.
