Oh my god soft shelled crab rolls, where have you been all my life???…read more I know everyone raves about the salmon at Sushi on Stanley (which features prominently on their menu and combo platter deals), but the soft shelled crab roll is truly the hidden gem on their menu ($5.50). Tell them you want them spicy, and these four pieces of fried crab loveliness are "this is so good I must be allergic to it or something" delicious. While I'm not sure I'll ever be able to tear myself away from the crab now that I have tried it, the tuna was tasty and sweet, and the fish teriyaki was also good. As an added bonus, though small, the restaurant itself is actually quite lovely with its simple Japanese touches and the wide grins of its diners lighting the place up.

For 15 years I've been enjoying that feeling of having a special place thats pretty much perfect. Where the guys knew me and the food was way above the rest. Makoto was the best Sushi Train I'd ever been to and it was fully 1 minutes walk down the road. So I went a lot, I mean at least 800 times. The value was there. My favourites were the tempura king prawn hand roll, the king prawn and omelette hand roll and the most basic of all, the salmon sushi. Thing was, all the offerings were fresh generous and delicious. Last year a new owner came in. You don't need to read anymore if you, like me, know what that always means. The first to go was James who had been there from the start. Most of the staff went because they put in the ubiquitous computer screen ordering system. Then they removed all the old prawn dishes. All of them. Now you are lucky if you get a pre prepared frozen crumbed prawn covered in a mayo mess. Then they reduced the sizes of every dish on the train so the salmon was much smaller. All my favourites disappeared or were scrimped. Then they put all the prices up. The next thing to go was the queue, then the regulars stopped going. Now there's barely anyone there at 12 noon when there used to be a wait for ten to fifteen minutes. I'll still go now and then because its still fresh and its still close. The really sad thing is that I see people there who never saw what it used to be - they probably think that this is a pretty good place, they don't know what it was like. Sigh. Update October 2018 The tempura king prawns hand rolls are back!!!! The other day they had the old cooked prawn and mayonnaise gunkan on the train, its not back full time but at least it made an appearance! The salmon sashimi is no longer scrimped upon. Its back to its old size. Back to 5 stars for the prawn hand rolls alone. Thank you God, I really missed those things. And they are still on the blue plates, which have been bumped from $3.60 to $3.80 - so what - 20c!! Two words - yaa. hoo.

When the manager finally came out, she said we could sit at the sushi bar provided we only ordered from the bento box menu as the sushi chef was too busy. Interesting, I thought we couldn't sit at the sushi bar? And what's with not being able to order anything else apart from the Bento box menu because the sushi chef is too busy preparing orders? Hmmm... isn't that kind of the business and expectation that the sushi chef would be busy making/preparing sushi/sashimi? Anyway, we ordered our Bento boxes and they were nicely presented. But I think for $40 a bento box and the name Azuma, I was kind of expecting more in terms of quality and quantity. The tempura was not fantastic. It wasn't that light crispy tempura I was expecting. I can definitely get much better tempura at less fancy Japanese restaurants. There was no white radish with the tempura sauce which was disappointing and not not very traditional. The wagyu beef was quite tough and chewy. Didn't seem very wagyu to me. On the positive, the sashimi served were good in terms of freshness. Also, looking at the sushi bar, they didn't seem to have 'Uni' (sea urchins) at all. Overall, I had a higher expectation from Azuma given the price and what Azuma claims itself to be. According to the 'About Azuma' page, it says Kimitaka Azuma's "passion is to deliver new and dynamic Japanese cuisine that is both traditional and innovative drives him to expand his business, in the hope that all Sydneysiders will be able to enjoy the experience of 'real' Japan." Unfortunately, it was far from that experience and I definitely did not feel the 'real' Japan. FRESH * FRESH * FRESH * FRESH *FRESH If there's one thing you need to know about Sushi Rio, everything is so FRESH!! I ordered a few items off the menu, but the rest I pulled off the train. We enjoyed a banquet of Japanese food at Umi Sushi in Haymarket…read more Umi Sushi have other locations in Darling Quarter and Town Hall. The Haymarket store is super big with a bar to sit at, a range of smaller tables and also some private rooms that also have karaoke. It is conviently close to central station and also the capitol theatre for those theatre lovers amongst us. We sat in a booth, ideal for the 6 of us in a quiet spot and the waiter served us a few cold Asahi's, perfect to accompany our first course - an array of sushi and sashimi. This was served in a huge sushi boat, which would be suitable for a party so you can try a few things. It was filled with kingfish carpaccio, smoked Toro, and a few types of nigiri sushi - fois gras, scampi, Umi, salmon belly, kingfish as well as a purple soft shell crab roll. Our favourite was the toro (salmon belly). It also had two new dishes, their Umi chirashi waffle ice cream cones, filled with sashimi (salmon or tuna), avocado and topped with konbu cream and a lotus chip. We then got a mix of hot and cold dishes in including Truffle cabbage, mentaiko omelette, grilled cheese scallops, grilled quail, mixed skewers and a wagyu steak platter. The final savoury dish was a soy milk broth hot pot which came with premium wagyu beef and a huge platter full of seafood and dry ice smoking from it for theatrics. We cooked this ourselves and mixed it all together while we waited. Ending on a dessert platter, we enjoyed some ice cream, matcha green tea cake and cheesecake. We were certainly satisfied by the end of this.

Went out for dinner and everything initially tasted fine. I had a chocolate mochi dessert, tuna…read morerolls and chicken and nothing else to eat before or after the meal. When I got home, I started experiencing severe stomach pain and intense nausea. I ended up vomiting throughout the night. Based on the timing and symptoms, it is likely that I got food poisoning from the sushi, possibly because it had not been properly refrigerated or prepared in hygienic conditions.
