We enjoyed a banquet of Japanese food at Umi Sushi in Haymarket. Umi Sushi have other locations in Darling Quarter and Town Hall. The Haymarket store is super big with a bar to sit at, a range of smaller tables and also some private rooms that also have karaoke. It is conviently close to central station and also the capitol theatre for those theatre lovers amongst us. We sat in a booth, ideal for the 6 of us in a quiet spot and the waiter served us a few cold Asahi's, perfect to accompany our first course - an array of sushi and sashimi. This was served in a huge sushi boat, which would be suitable for a party so you can try a few things. It was filled with kingfish carpaccio, smoked Toro, and a few types of nigiri sushi - fois gras, scampi, Umi, salmon belly, kingfish as well as a purple soft shell crab roll. Our favourite was the toro (salmon belly). It also had two new dishes, their Umi chirashi waffle ice cream cones, filled with sashimi (salmon or tuna), avocado and topped with konbu cream and a lotus chip. We then got a mix of hot and cold dishes in including Truffle cabbage, mentaiko omelette, grilled cheese scallops, grilled quail, mixed skewers and a wagyu steak platter. The final savoury dish was a soy milk broth hot pot which came with premium wagyu beef and a huge platter full of seafood and dry ice smoking from it for theatrics. We cooked this ourselves and mixed it all together while we waited. Ending on a dessert platter, we enjoyed some ice cream, matcha green tea cake and cheesecake. Honestly a bit disappointed about this place. I thought Sydney was known for fresh seafood, but the sushi I had here wasn't that nice. The rolls itself was a little sloppy and the rice lacked flavor. As for the seafood, the quality was subpar. The whole point of sushi is freshness, right? I don't know how people can say this place is like Japan especially since everything including the service wasn't that great. read more

One of the many sushi train places in Sydney but the quality of the sushi is pretty good. Not spectacular but it's fresh. It is a little weird to have an aquarium in the middle of a sushi restaurant but so it goes. Service was a little off. Probably the best Japanese sushi train I have had in Sydney so far. The quality was great for Sydney standards, although still not at Japan standards. The prices were fair between 2:30pm-5 for their "all plates $3.50". Plenty of variety going around the train, easy to order special requests, extremely tasty. Only negatives were no tea offered and again couldn't find any pickled ginger at the tables or on the belt. Definitely worth checking out if you have come back to Australia after Japan and you simply get disappointed at the Japanese food in Sydney, this one will make you think you are still in Japan. read more

This is a pretty good alternative to Makoto .. 2nd best sushi train in Sydney perhaps ? I went here today because I didn't want to wait for a seat at Makoto during the dinner rush. It's a nice looking place right opposite the Capitol Theatre. There is decent variety and it's certainly fresh and not far off Makoto standards. They have all the good stuff, salmon sashimi, scampi sashimi, all types of fish sashimi and also have a varied a la carte menu. The soft shell crab roll was pretty good, they have some original combinations here that set them apart from your average sushi train. The prices are on par with Makoto and you would be satisfied with this place if you're super fussy. It is close to the Makoto but just not quite better ! read more

This was my first sushi train experience, I went there for lunch so it was pretty crowded. This place is good for a quick meal as many people come in, eat and go. The sushi were great and tasted really fresh! The price is vey reasonable ranging from $4-8 AUD depending on the colour of the plate. read more

Sushi train restaurants usually weird me out. How am I to know which rolls and plates have been circling at room temperatures for hours? It seems like a health gamble to me, which I usually don't prefer to take. When a friend suggested Umi Kaiten Zushi as a Monday night dinner spot, I didn't object, but I was certainly a little bit wary. We sat down at the large sushi bar next to the "train track" and in front of the large aquarium. I automatically breathed a little sigh of relief. This place didn't seem dodgy at all. We sipped Sapparo and I watched the sushi chef's quick hands at work. I asked him which cuts were the freshest. He was friendly and helpful and I waiting until his suggestions came around to my side of the bar. Everything I tried was delicious. From the salmon sashimi to the unagi mini rolls, it became a fun interactive game. I eyed the rolls I wanted, let them pass once and snatched them up as they came around again. I left stuffed (I was too good at the game) and singing quite a different tune about sushi train restaurants. With freshness and novelty in their bag, this is definitely a great place the dine. read more

I had a good lunch here with a large group. One issue we had was that we made a booking, and while I made the booking they asked if I wanted an indoor or outdoor table. I said indoor, but when we arrived days later, they told me they only had big tables that were outdoors. I'm not sure why they didn't specify that on the phone then I had made the reservations. It normally might not be a big deal, but it was kind of a wet and cold day, and we would have definitely preferred to be more inside. We were able to sit under cover, but it wasn't an indoor table. The staff was accommodating as they could be while we were there, but I wish they would have been clearer about seating options on the phone. There were also some feisty seagulls and pigeons around that would not have been an issue if we could have been seated further inside like we wanted. Another strange thing: they have some items on the menu that they simply do not serve. When you ask them, they say they serve those at the other locations. They really should not have menu items if they're never available, and perhaps the different locations should have different menus if they are going to serve different things. The food itself was tasty. We had bento boxes, udon, sushi, tempura, etc. I would go back again with a smaller group (maybe 4 or less), or on a day with nicer weather. One final thing worth noting - google maps takes you to the wrong side of the building to find this place. It is on the side of the building with the walking path, playground, and other restaurants and cafes. If you find yourself by the parking garage, you are on the wrong side of the building. read more

Umi is a really good sushi train located right near the capitol theatre in china town. It gets busy here, but what's great is that its off the main street and a little hidden, so its less well known that alot of the other sushi train restaurants that get packed earlier and are hard to get into. The atmosphere's great here too, what I like best is the big fish tank at the back with all the tropical fish, although the fact that I'm looking at fish while eating fish always weirds me out. The food here is fantastic, one of the plates going around the bowl of fried fish is a must, as are the freshly made sushi rolls prepared right in front of you by the chefs. Definitely a great place to go when you're in the mood for sushi. read more

Nice honest Sushi The food is fresh, tasty and served with good presentation. Service can be average ( difficult to get attention) but the food makes up for it. Definitely worth a try if your close by. I have been eating here for years and always been extremely impressed by the cleanliness of this place , which is obviously important for a Sushi bar. I used to love Umi Kaiten Zushi but it seems like they are under new management - my recent dining experience has been one of the worst I've ever had in Sydney, and I am saddened to realise that my once favourite sushi train has now degraded in cleanliness, ambience and service! - Some of the sushi looked a bit off in colour, it looked like the sushi had been rotating on the conveyor belt for hours and hours - The service was terrible, there was only a few other patrons in the restaurant but the 4 waiters strolled past still failed to notice that we were trying to take an order. The waiter even got our order wrong and delivered a different dish to what we requested - and after voicing that we didn't like the dish and asking if they could not include it in the bill, they "nodded" only to charge us anyway at the cashier - I am very severely disappointed that we had to pay for the waiter's mistake, making us come to the conclusion that the service for our dining experience was absolutely appalling. - The decorative fish tank was beyond filthy and cloudy and I felt severely sorry for the fish - The paint was peeling off in several areas of the ceiling as the decor has not changed since at least 2008. There was some dust or residue on the ceiling right above us and we were scared it would come falling onto the patrons' food... Overall a horrific dining experience and will definitely be taking this restaurant off our consideration for future visits. read more

Loved this place. We were on holiday, riding the tram and saw this place in passing. Located in China Town. Sat down at the bar, but there are booths available. John, one of the sushi chefs, was very helpful in our selections. He was a wiz with salmon. My fave was the rosemary salmon...very yummy. Beer, wine and sake was available. I am addicted to sushi trains at the moment and I love this place, It has a cool huge fish tank that you can sit right infront of where you can loose your train of thought and relax while you have your choice of sushi pass right by you ready for the picking! It is moderately priced and you have dishes starting at $2.50. It can get crowded at peak hour and on weekends though. They have takeaway available but no home delivery. They also serve alcahol too and I hear its BYO as well! Oh and apparently Wheel chair accesible also which is always a good thing! read more
