We called ahead of time and were told to bring our own alcohol, which I have never heard of at a restaurant. We arrived and began eating. The chef started his show and serving food. He prepared a very small portion of beef and chicken for those of us sitting at the table, but I assumed there would be multiple servings, so I didn't mind at the time. The chef asked if any of us liked playing games, and my group said we weren't great at them, but he insisted. He threw us bowls and told us he would be throwing a raw egg at each of us that we would need to catch. He threw the raw egg at my fiancé, and she failed to catch it, resulting in raw egg whites, yolk, and shell all over her skirt. I was visibly upset and spoke up, saying that was enough, but the chef insisted on throwing another egg for her to catch, which also landed on her skirt. Without hesitation, the chef then threw an egg at me to catch, which I thankfully did not drop. After embarrassing my fiancé at the table, the chef cooked and folded an egg and told us he would be throwing the cooked egg into our mouths. He made an absolute fool of everyone at the table. The other party seated with us was clearly uncomfortable with him throwing hot food at their faces, and I said that I didn't think it was necessary, but he continued. When he came around to my group, he missed several times, which led to my friends getting egg not only on their clothes but also in their hair. Thankfully, I don't eat eggs, so I didn't personally have to deal with this, but one of my friends was extremely frustrated with having food in his hair and all over his clothes. Shortly after this, a worker began sweeping the floor beside us while we were still eating. I've had hibachi a number of times, and this was easily the worst experience I've ever had. The chef seemed nice but did not know how to read the room, the food was decent at best, the portions were tiny, and the whole vibe of the place was off.

You can see everything they cook in front of you and how they prepare it. The place is small and decoration is minimal, walls are black. The cooker likes to play games that involve catching bowls and food in your mouth. The environment is very friendly and welcoming. I recommend anyone to visit, you are sure to have a good time. My experience was fun and very good. Example of price: for 3 people, our bill was around $170 Meals are around $50, $30 per head, depends on what you order.

I initially thought of ramen for 5 sec, but then we agreed it's healthier and easy on stomach if we do soba instead. We both ordered draft beer - 'Orion' beer which is from Okinawa, and seiro soba (plain soba). The soba noodles were perfectly cooked, and I enjoyed the taste + texture. The dipping sauce was good, too and we finished to drink the sauce after adding hot water which was used to boil soba noodles. It was light, but good snack to satisfy my appetite.

It's a tiny little space, with about 6 table tops and seating for 8 at the counter. We didn't have a reservation but 2 spots at the counter opened up just as we got there. Seating at the counter is fun as you get watch them cook. It can get a little warm due to the teppanyaki plates but it's nice if you're feeling chilly. We ordered the agedashi tofu, the Jugemu okonomiyaki and chicken curry hot soba (the other house speciality is fresh made soba) to share between two. Ingredients and food were all fresh and beautifully cooked. Sadly, we were too full to order dessert. I only wish there had been more sweet sauce on the okonomiyaki.

We can to visit from the US and I felt they run the restaurant communist style, everything is about them and what's next for them and absolutely doesn't care or think about the customer. It's so dead in there and they packed us next to another family on one side of the restaurant even though we wanted to be more spread out because it was so hot in there since their ac wasn't working and this is summer time.. like 90 degrees out side. They just kept saying that it's on, but the building is very old so that's why we don't really feel it. When the chef cooks in front of you, it gets even hotter. We couldn't eat that awful beef burrito and wanted to take it home to redo it ourselves since we paid lots of money for it, but they say that we're not allowed to take any of our leftovers home. I'm like wtf? You serious? Then the bill came and they added a 10% surcharge to our bill and I'm like, what's this? Can you do this? She said scarcity, yeah, we can, cause it's a holiday.. it was New Year's Day. It'll be nice if they were to mention this to us when we made our reservations or even when they were taking our orders. They didn't apologize for that we knew nothing about it or anything either. They didn't have to answer down on me implying that, we're so right on this one. The waitstaff were all rude and looked like they didn't want or didn't enjoy working there. Service sooo slow too. Waited like 10 mins for my beer and only because I rushed them on it after 5 mins. The restaurant was dead, I don't see why it's so hard to get me a beer. This place is sooo weird and has bad etiquette. It's like walking into another world of its own. Workers are soooo weird in there that it's like they're from another planet. There was this young girl I. Their full of attitude and was walking around like she's a model or something and acts like a snob, but she's not even pretty too. This place is just soooo weird.

But we weren't served the rice or miso (would have been too full anyway) but a little disappointed we didn't get what was promised. Udon tasted authentic, the prawn inside the tempura shell was fresh and cooked well, loved the runny egg yolk and large mushrooms. Soup base was light and tasted good. I ended up slurping all the soup, even though I don't normally eat the soup in noodle dishes. The dessert was one small scoop of black sesame ice cream. The ice cream was served inside a ramekin, and the ramekin and ice cream was frozen and ice cream had ice shavings around it. I'm pretty sure they made it more than a week ago and froze it. Didn't taste fresh, and was very dry and hard. I pierced my spoon into the ice cream and a small piece came out. Tasted very frozen, hard, and could taste the freezer taste. I didn't have any more.

Hence my wariness when a recent family diner was booked at HaNa Ju-Rin in Crows Nest. But I was oh so wrong. I'm sure it helped that my sister-in-law is an expert orderer, but I still managed to be dumbstruck by every dish. There was gyoza, there was udon, there was king fish salad. Then there were slightly more adventurous dishes like giblets, intestines and beef tongue. And finally there was the dish that rocked my world: okonomiyaki. Sweet mercy this fried pancake slice of savoury deliciousness canNOT be good for you, but you'll definitely find me hoeing into one next time I have hangover. In fact, hangover or no, you'll be sure find me hanging out in front of HaNa again soon.
