I have not been to Sonny's BBQ in over 20 years because I thought the food was horrible. April 5, 2026 my friend and I decided to give Sonny's BBQ another chance. April 5, 2026 the food was good. Natalia who was our waitress she gave us excellent service. We asked Natalia to please make sure the food was fresh and hot. Natalia did an excellent job the food was fresh hot and tasty etc. We went back mainly because of Natalia accept this time she was not on the clock so we were given another waitress. April 11, 2026 OMG what a nightmare. (This girl only had 2 tables). It took this girl 20 minutes just to get our drink order. Then we asked this waitress to make sure the food was fresh so that it would be hot. Nothing was hot a matter of fact a couple of the items were cold in the middle the ribs and pulled pork were so overcooked they were sooo dry. We asked the waitress to please get us fresh hot food. She said "yes". This girl left our plates on the table we don't know if she ever informed the kitchen to re-fire the food, as we were waiting for the waitress to remove our plates so the kitchen would know to re-fire the food, the waitress proceeded to bring an order to another table then on her way back to the kitchen she stopped and was cleaning tables. (Mind you our food is still sitting on the table we are still not sure that she informed the kitchen). When we finally got our food it was tepid at best. We had enough and I asked for the check. We waited and waited then I had enough so I went to the guy greeting people at the door and asked him if he could please get our check. This guy basically told me NO. I then asked for the manager now it's like 15 to 20 minutes later I am now speaking with the manager when this girl walks up to me and rudely hands me the check and says something under her breath. The worst waitress I have ever met. My tip to her is "find another line of work, this is not for you". read more

Stopped by here for lunch about 2:30pm on a Sunday. The place was not crowded at all but we were led to a table that had been recently used even though there were plenty of unoccupied tables nearby. The hostess wiped it down, but that meant we had a wet table. Each table comes equipped with a BBQ sauce caddy, plenty of wet naps for sticky fingers, and a paper towel dispenser. The paper towels were made of rough brown recycled paper, which is fine, but they had no perforations so tore very unevenly which was a nuisance. Every item on the menu, including the salads came with BBQ sauce added except the fries, Cole slaw , and Mac & cheese side dishes. Sonny's is serious about BBQ! I ordered the St Louis rib dinner with 2 side dishes ($19 and some change). I chose Cole slaw and fries for my side dishes. The fries were thick, and even though they were crispy on the outside the inside was kind of mushy. The sides were nothing special unless they had BBQ sauce added. The ribs were very meaty and the meat definitely falls off the bone. Of the 4 BBQ sauces available, I liked the original sauce the best. The other choices were smoky, sweet, and sweet & spicy. My wing man Gary ordered the BBQ pulled pork dinner with BBQ beans and Cole slaw side dishes. Our food came out quickly. I forgot to get the name of our server but he was conscientious and knowledgeable about the menu. Every time he passed our table he stopped briefly to ask if there was anything we needed. If you are serious about BBQ you should try Sonny's. My advice is order any of the BBQ dishes and ignore everything else. read more

Dropped by wanting BBQ and ordered to go on the drive through. Wife and I both had the two meat combo. Brisket and Ribs. We were hit with a surcharge on both. I thought ribs and brisket were bbq. We came here on a Sunday for lunch. They weren't too crowded and we were seated right away. The service was good. Our server was okay. The food came out quickly. We had the value meal (only $13!); sandwich, drink and side. The Smoking Gun Sandwich (beef, brisket, sausage) was good. The sausage wasn't that hot. The Pulled Pork Sandwich was fine. Walked in thinking ribs and ordered the Prime Rib BBQ sandwich instead and wow! I want it again. It was so good especially with the addition of the crispy onion straws. We haven't stopped by this location in quite a while. I'm certainly glad that we did. The restaurant was clean and tidy. We were quickly greeted and seated. We ordered the "Big Deal". We opted for the Sliced Pork on a bun with fries. We also got an order of Fried Okra with some ranch dressing for dipping. The food came out in about 15 minutes and it was piping hot! Overall, the food was delicious. Our server was friendly and speedy. We also ordered a quart of their potato salad to go... because it's great! Terrible slow service for weekend lunch crowd. The food's pretty good but Stephanie was possibly the worst server I've ever had. Wish we were at another station. Sat for a good 15 minutes after receiving our drinks until we could order. I understand there are other customers - but please don't tend to them if we arrived first. Yes, it's a chain and that's fine with me. Had a combo plate with ribs and pulled pork. Sides were slaw and sweet potato. They include garlic bread as well Every item was delicious, hence the 5 stars. BBQ is a tough business and this area has seen many BBQ restaurants close recently. Support the ones that are still around and have realistic expectations. BBQ is NOT meant to be a gourmet experience, just enjoy the food. read more

We stopped in today for there prime rib at 4. Ordered 2 meals medium rear. 25 mins later we got 2 prime rib dinners well done. The person that came over as the manager didn't have a clue how to cook prime rib. You only cook it up to rare. After that you bring the piece up to what your current order is. This is one of Florida's stable BBQ spots. Have been coming here for years. Food: They have several BBQ options and has changed over the years. Some good some just okay. But it is the sauce that really makes this BBQ really good. The meats have great season and great flavor but it the sauces that really make it really great. The baked beans is cooked to the way I like them and the famous garlic bread is what you can't deny. Service: This was a to-go order, therefore I didn't get to really interact with the staff but over the years, they have been really good and willing to assist you for what you need. Overall: If you haven't tried them, I recommend you do and hopefully you will be back for more for them to reopen some of their closed stores. read more

I hadn't had BBQ for a while, & had never tried Sonny's so I decided to try it. My odyssey with Sonny's started when I ordered "curbside pick up" from the web site, & when I got there I found that there's parking for take out but no curbside pick up. So I went inside & the young men working the takeout window were friendly & personable, & they told me there isn't curbside pick up (those guys are the only reason why I chose 2 stars instead of one). Being that I still had to drive home I didn't expect the food to be piping hot. What I did not expect was how dry & overcooked the meat was. I had ordered the "2 meat/2 sides" meal. The sides: coleslaw (meh) & sweet potato (ok but overcooked) were really not bad, but the star of the show was a complete flop: the rib(lets) were dry & chewy, & the brisket was chalky-tasting. Relying on the packets of BBQ sauce to moisten the (very dry) meat seemed like a sad way to serve BBQ. It's obvious that Sonny's Pitmaster hasn't been to this outlet in a very long time, if ever. read more

Ordered delivery through uber, so I couldn't address these issues at the store. Got a pulled pork sandwich with a large chunk of mangled meat, barely half of the sandwich was actual pulled pork. Got a drink with the meal, and there was a black thing floating around in the soda (presumably plastic) Flavor of the food was decent. I came to Sonny's today and had their brisket, grilled cheese, sandwich, coleslaw, and a salad with ranch. The first thing I want to say is, it was probably one of the best brisket sandwiches I've ever had been and it was on the garlic toast, lots of cheese and lots of meat. The coleslaw was good and complemented the sandwich well. The salad was a good size with lots of tomatoes and cucumbers, and the ranch tasted fresh. But the best part about this meal was the service as well. Very kind people there and I would recommend anybody to go there to see what I'm saying. You should hire people that greet you when you walk in, or don't leave you standing there at pick up while no one attends to you and hostess still just stands there, walks behind the to go window, makes no eye contact still, walks back out to the stand and still says nothing. Bartender looking at phone. Servers walking by, no one helps, another person walks behind to go window, doesn't make eye contact. Then I have to flag someone down just to literally get attention while I'm standing there the whole time. They call someone he asked if he can help me, I said what do I due to pick up my order. Honestly, don't blame Sonny's, aside from Chick-fil-A, you can't find a restuarant that can properly ensure Togo food comes out how you ordered or that everything is as it should be. We order lunch daily from local businesses and we are no longer going to be spending $100+ on lunch anymore for the staff. From ordering protein on salads and only getting the chicken on 1 out of 3 salads to ordering the "larger" sandwiches and getting regular sized sandwiches or the protein being more fat than meat. Another business we are no longer giving our business to because their option for togo's is either problematic or just not satisfying. We work too hard to look forward to lunch to only be let down. I'm sure ordering dine-in is better because at least you can complain and they'll make it right like most places, unfortunately you can't really do that with to go's. read more

First and foremost, our waitress Kristina P. was wonderful. She was friendly and welcoming. Now, the reason for me reaching out. This was hands down our worst experience at the Pinellas Park location. We received our food about 20 minutes after ordering. This is an appropriate wait time. However, my wife's BBQ Chicken Tenders were ice cold as if they just came out of the refrigerator. I mentioned this to our waitress, and she graciously apologized and took care of us right away. She had the kitchen remake them. There was an elderly couple seated in the booth west of us that waited for a little over 30 minutes for their food and their food was also cold. The elderly lady asked to speak to the manager when the waitress replied, "Let me go get him." This poor excuse of a manager did not come out to see the guests. Instead, he sent the waitress out as a little messenger. The customers asked for the manager again and in a very unprofessional manner and demeanor Greg, came out in a t-shirt and jeans, spoke rudely to the guests, grabbed their plates and went into the kitchen. 30 feet from the kitchen I saw him slam the dishes down and start yelling and using vulgar language telling the staff to remake the dishes. After the guest food came back out, he did not follow up with them to see if they were satisfied with his solution. The guy was an absolute tool. Now, let's talk about the sub-par food quality. What the actual heck is Sonny's BBQ serving? Beans were pasty and bland; the coleslaw was cabbage and water. Had no seasoning, no flavor, and was downright disgusting. Little to no meat on the ribs, and the brisket was not pleasant either. We have eaten worse so, we pushed through, finishing our meals. I am trying to figure out what exactly Sonny's BBQ's definition of "Sweet Tea" is. What I ordered tonight was far from ANY sweet tea I have ever had. It was like tea flavored water with a pinch of sweetener. Come on y'all. Sonny's BBQ needs to do better. Food was great but let's just say service was probably the most unprofessional we've ever been apart of. There was this women who was our server her name was Megan. She was giving us free beer and took off all kinds of food off the bill to be "cool" as we were egging her on and she just kept going and we turned it into a game and seen how far we could take this. She starts drinking with us in kids cups pouring beer in it so she can "chug" with us and then she says it's ok me and manager are besties. Pleasantly surprised at this Sonny's. We came after a fishing trip and during covid times, indoor seating establishments were limited and thankfully we stumbled upon Sonny's. This location had plentiful parking and was newly renovated compared to the other architectural style. The service and food were surprisingly good - it had been a while since I last stepped into a Sonny's. We ordered the family platter and had plenty of food to take back with us. My Brother, Nephew and myself took a trip to Sonny's. My Nephew is handicapped, and it was good to get out with he and his Pop. My Nephew ordered a 3 meats platter, while my Brother and I asked for the 2 meat dinner... both of us asked for a double order of the pulled pork. I was taken aback when the orders arrived: the "two portions" of pulled pork were one lump on the plate with the garlic bread, a bowl of slaw, and a baked potato. My Brother's plate was the same. We called over the waiter. I politely asked if that was what Sonny's called two portions. He seemed offended that I asked: "that "is" two portions. I divided the meat in two parts, placed the tiny butter cup (about an inch in diameter) on it to show the size of two Sonny's orders of pulled pork... (yes, the edge of the potato is about the size of one portion, lol) The potato was very good, the slaw not bad... If you try Sonny's, I would suggest you stay away from the pulled pork. We landed here for a very late dinner after going to the Enchant St Petersburg event at Tropicana Field. We arrived at 8:15pm, they close at 9- so we knew we would have to quickly pick our meals. At 8:30, after looking around for a server for several minutes, our server appeared. She was in the back cleaning and no one told her she had been sat. Sigh. That host.We ordered and we were off. The server brought us our drinks super fast and I swear- 6 minutes and she was back with all of our food!!! I ordered the pulled pork sandwich on garlic toast (I've always ordered this way even though the menu says served on bun- how boring), with a baked potato. My son-in-law had never heard of ordering the sandwich on the garlic toast and he was in! Brisket sandwich on garlic toast with fries. Crystin went all in with ribs! She got mac-n-cheese and a baked potato that she set in front of me. Side note- I used to always fix my kids baked potatoes with butter and sour cream- so she was having me do it again. Connor's mom got a dinner plate too with coleslaw and fries and pulled pork. Everything was delicious. Pulled pork was tender and cooked perfect. Connor's brisket was juicy and my daughter inhaled her ribs- messy and happy. Our server checked in on us and set down boxes in one of her fly bys- really making sure we were set. There was a customer that wasn't minding her child and she wouldn't take him to the bathroom because she needed to be on her phone more...so he urinated right there on the patio after a significant amount of time passed. Yup. You read that correctly. The staff members and the manager handled it like pros. Now, we had a long wait at our table prior to this developing....and this added to it. I suspect they were a problem table from the get-go. It would explain some things. I do have to say though that the manager took care of us and so did our waitress. Once the offending customers were rightfully escorted off of the property, we had the kind of service you should expect. MEATS: We had the sliced brisket (still had too much fat cap (originally a Kansas girl here...BBQ=Kansas) And the sampler plate. The meats were smoked and perfectly juicy. Have to have the BBQ sauce to give it some seasoning. (Shouldn't need to add sauce on good BBQ). That all said, I'm not in Kansas anymore. And for what you can get in Florida, this fits the bill!! **It is important to note that I'm VERY picky about my BBQ. ** SIDES: The BBQ beans are alright. A little too sweet for my taste. The green beans....GET THE GREEN BEANS. Smokey and delicious & so much flavor. Maybe a little too much pepper. But I'd absolutely order this again next time we are here. We both ended up with the same 2 sides since they were out of a few things on this occasion. DRINKS: Margarita and a LIT. Both were ok. Bottom of the well. I had asked for Patron (as I always do)because cheap booze gives me stomach aches. They didn't have any so I just went with what they had. They did have a 2/$4 draft beers....I'll be sure to do this next time. I do want to emphasize that this location, staff, and management are excellent. So, do them and everyone a favor: take your kid to pee so they don't end up with a UTI (the kid is the victim here) or a traumatizing experience, and also so that you don't have to ruin other families evenings. Has to be my favorite American restaurant, made me love eating ribs. The waitress was quick with our orders, Though the food came in, earlier than expected, and quickly. The kitchen gets to work immediate, I applaud for that. Sides: I've seen from other reviewers that the sides are small. It's true. The size could possibly feed a child, it would be nice if they expanded their sides. - The Mac n Cheese could be better. It didn't have much flavor to it. - Loving the baked potatoes. It was the perfect size and the skin is easy to tear, it has this "crispy" feeling when you first bite into it. Those are the perfect potatoes. - Garlic bread was meh. It had a good crunch to it, although it was greasy. It wasn't burnt (especially for the other food as well) - I tried out the fries, not too salty but it was dull. I could enjoy it with sauce, eating it alone felt weird. - Coleslaw tasted ranchy. The orders: (St.Louis) It is $17.99 according to the website's menu. They overload on the sauce a bit much. I can still taste the ribs, but my hands are just coated by the sauces. I was getting full with barely a quarter of my food done, but it's an adequate portion for me. (Pork 3 Ways) This one was $15.99 which is weird. I felt like the St.Louis ribs shouldn't be as expensive to the Pork 3 order in comparison. The pulled pork was not that good. It has a hint of sour in the sauce. For the chicken? It looks unnatural. It tastes like nothing, and the texture is a little tough chewing it. I'm not sure if it's supposed to be a grey-ish base with partial pink on some spots. You could also smell the fresh meat and sauces from your seat. Bathrooms seems hygienic, I do not trust public bathrooms personally, but the bathrooms here seems trustable. Some extra points on that! The food is good other than the cons I've listed, but it could be managed a bit. I have hope for this restaurant. read more
