Go to the NEW Sonnenberg's Market and see the changes. Recent remodeling has led to a long, long, liquor counter. The liquor counter has every liquor that you can imagine the remodeling now has the checkouts counter is in a different portion of the market. I think they should rename the market the liquor store. The prices are still rather high, but most people will go there for the meat counter b anyway. The ambience well you know it's neighborhood market would you expect? I think that this market has made some significant changes that would better the neighborhood also. read more

Too chaotic for me. The quality of the meats seemed good and the staff, helpful. The prices looked ok. I didn't see any kind of numbering system for help. The space by the meats was crowded, so it was hard to see the offerings. Not a great area of town and a little far for me to make a special trip. This place has the freshest meat and the best sandwiches! I always get great service and you can't beat their prices. The line can get long so I encourage you get there early. They have plenty of parking in their lots so you will find something close. The building is old and dated, but it has so much history. read more

Sonenburgs is under new owners and is not taking any gift cards purchased from the last owners. There was no signs or warnings that it was going under new management. So anyone with gift cards could use before sold. So now I have a $100 gift card purchased at Sonenburgs worth nothing. read more

Small local store and deli with REALLY reasonable prices. Got everything I need (meat, veg) for three dinners and paid $15. Most of what I got was on sale prices but there were enough items on sale to make the three dinners (I'll add the starches from what's in the pantry). If you need a cheap sandwich that taste immaculate, you need to come by Sonneberg! Their deli customer service it's always phenomenal, they're always willing to cut fresh slices of deli meat for you. Sandwiches are only affordable, but they're completely packed at the gils with meat cheese, and all the other items you used to add. We have shopped at Sonnenberg's for years and this past week we were shocked when we were not able to use a gift card from their store that was given to us by a family member as a Christmas present. When we tried to use it, the cashier told us that they were no longer accepting gift cards as it was now under new ownership. When we ask to speak to the owner/manager, we were not given the opportunity to do so and was told that was their new policy and nothing they would do to change that. Someone was more than willing to take the money (old owner/new owner) but now they will not honor it. This is a very deceptive way to run a business and borders on theft by deception. We will never shop in your store again and will pass this on to others we know. We hope that others that received gift cards will do the same. read more

I will admit that I hesitated going to this market because of the fact that it is located in a very bad area. There are a lot of people roaming around, looking to break into cars, etc. in this area park somewhere visible and don't leave anything in your car with that being said, Sonenberg's market is excellent. Don't let the old appearances fool you as you walk in. Yes their building is outdated but they do keep a clean area behind the counter and their customer service has been great for me. Each time I have visited their food has been great quality and maybe the older building is keeping their cost down because compared to other local meat markets, their prices are either equivalent or much lower in many cases. Oh Sonnenburg's....how I love thee. For over 30 years, now. It's everything all other reviewers have mentioned, and then some. We do have our favorites that we order up from their amazing butcher counter, rarely straying from what we take home. NY Ital-Sausage of course, because it's legendary, but we always grab several lbs of ground pork (for midwestern pork burgers); seasonal celebratory Prime Rib Roasts (bones 4 thru 6); and our favorite: a whole NY Strip Roast--untrimmed--to slice into steaks, usually using a third of it for a nice Sunday beef roast. They are generally $5.99lb, so try finding that at your local grocery store for better quality beef. And, I will always enjoy the rough exterior/interior/staff/patrons, along with the interesting characters hovering outside the establishment. But there isn't too much derelict dodging during mornings and early afternoon... I think there are far worse areas in downtown Spokane, where the tourists frequent... read more

Finally made it to this gem. Amazing meat counter, best selection I've seen. I'm not a steak guy but the filets, definitely expensive, were good. I'm more excited about the linguica and Italian sausage we bought. Bought three massive pig ears for our dogs for $3.50! To go sandwiches are great and a great deal at $5.99. Yes it's not in a great area. But that area is a lot better than it was 20 years ago. We have been going here for all of those 20 years, at least once a month. Everyone loves their New York style sausage as do we, but our favorite is their horseradish cheddar sausage, when they have it! They rely on some guy who makes the cheese, and apparently he is subject to his own schedule, not theirs. I have no problem saying that particular sausage is, you guessed it, theee best ever! And even though people have had issues with the riff-raff that is sometimes outside the business, we've never had a problem. Having a Hubby who's 6'8" and 285 might have something to do with that lol, but honestly we just smile and treat everyone with respect and we're on our way to that great sausage! read more

If it weren't for the Italian sausage I don't believe I would ever step foot in this store. It's pretty sketchy on the way in with me being called a B... since I would agree to buy some cigs for the pair standing out front. That being said, it makes it a 'unique place to get your Italian sausage fix. I don't believe any better can be found in our area. This alone is worth the discomfort of passing through the riff-raff on the way in. The whole meat department actually looks top notch. I first heard about Lebanon Bologna from Brian Roof who wrote about it in Americas Test Kitchen. It's made by Seltzers in Pennsylvania and for east coast aficionados, it's a staple... here on the west coast, not so much... I've had it in specialty deli's but never any place close to Spokane. I even call the company to try to find out where close by I could buy it. They said online, but shipping is Uber expensive since it needs to be packed in ice. Just happened upon the Sonnenberg's website and called them. Sure enough they carried both the sweet and the original! I zoomed down there and not only got the Bologna but other meats that were terrific buys ! This is my new favorite store and can't wait to try out some of their other goodies! This is no doubt one of Spokane's best kept secrets, it seems like everyone I ask doesn't know about this place. Everything is really cool looking, great deals, and unique products. I got a Deluxe sandwich at the deli, turkey & pastrami on French bread with lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, bell peppers, Mayo, and mustered. I ordered a 11 lb. prime rib, drove over an hour to pick it up. When I returned home and opened the box I found Rib Eye Steaks, I spoke to them about the mix up and they told me to return the steaks and they would get my prime rib. When I returned they gave me a bone in prime rib, when I explained to them that I had purchased a bone out they got rude. Toughest Prime Rib I have ever eaten. Save your money and shop anywhere else, I suggest US Chefs Store better prices and quality. read more
