Located in…read moreCloverdale, Virginia, it's a family-run business well known in the area for its Hershey's ice cream and Nathan's hot dogs. But besides these two items, it's menu has expanded and now includes a delicious pork barbecue, sausage hoagies, and grilled cheese sandwiches. They offer window service and have reasantly started accepting credit cards in addition to cash. They now also have a fenced-in little patio with a picnic table and red umbrella to be able to sit down and enjoy your meal there. I arrived there on a hot summer day with temperatures in the 100 degrees. I had just eaten elsewhere, but stopped there to have some ice-cream. The building front was decorated in such a way that immediately captured the attention of anyone driving by, and so it did to me. I invite you to view my photographs accompanying this review to get a better sense of the place and its delicious offerings. After approaching the window, a friendly older lady opened it up and gave me a warm welcome. She told me they did not have a printed menu yet but all around the window there were posted menus of what they had. It was so hot that I decided to go with a Strawberry Milkshake, because with this heat any ice cream would melt quickly. While the owner prepared my milkshake a lady customer of the place arrived and we established conversation. She ended up being a relative of the owner of Brood Restaurant in Salem, Virginia. One of the last restaurants that I had written a Yelp review and was being featured in the app together with one of my photographs. She was delighted with by review just by reading the first few sentences and took a picture of it on my phone with her phone. What a small world I thought to myself. She suggested that next time I should try their pork barbecue. Another customer was also having the pork barbecue and also recommended it. When my milkshake was ready, I started drinking it with a thin straw the lady gave me, but it was so thick that I recommended she get thicker straws next time, but it was so good that I took the lid off and ended up drinking the cold and delicious milkshake. I highly recommend this ice cream shop and am looking forward to returning to try their now famous pork barbecue and maybe one of their Special Sundaes.

It is a basically 100% dairy operation so if you are seeking non-dairy ice cream then Blue Cow is a better destination (despite the name). The Down Home Creamery is located in a small, modern, red brick, business building on 116 S Poplar Street in Vinton, not too far from the Vinton Library. As one enters the glass doors of the creamery, the decor is modern black and white with accent wood and light color hardwood floors. The place is very clean and well maintained and has a freezer with 24 flavors of ice cream right as you enter and covered with very clean and clear glass doors for one to see and appreciate the different flavors available. It also has many bottles filled with toppings, as well as a variety of Waffle cones and bowls. The atmosphere is very relaxed with fresh air circulation that make you feel comfortable when ordering and eating your ice cream. There was a young lady attendant who greeted me with a smile and took my order of two scoops of Peanut Butter Ice Cream in a Waffle Bowl. The Waffle was fresh and crispy, while the ice cream had just the right smoothness to bring out its flavor at its best. The young lady attendant spent time cleaning the counter as I ate my ice cream in one of the tables of the place. Two other customers arrived while I was their and they were fascinated by the many flavors that they ordered a scoop of several of them. I really enjoyed the place, the service, and the very creamy ice cream. If any of you are like me, that just love ice cream and eating it in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere, I highly recommend this creamery. And as for me, I definitely will be coming here some more from now on and tell others about the place.

Today I happened to be in the area with a friend and after having dinner at a Chinese restaurant we decided to go there to have ice-cream for dessert. When we arrived we noticed that the Ice Cream Parlor and Restaurant shares a large parking lot with the other stores of that Mall, and it's located in the last storefront on the left of the strip mall. The sign high above of the front of the business reads: Lickidy Split - ICE CREAM & MORE. And on the windows it mentions: HOT DOGS and BBQ. So this is not only an Ice Cream Parlor alone, it is also a restaurant selling comfort food ss well. The windows and the restaurant inside were very clean and organized. It had a sign with the names of the 40 flavors of Hershey's Ice Cream available there. The dining area was filled mostly with mostly square tables with different color tablecloths that gave the place a joyful look and unique decor, even though they did not have many other decorations. Since it had a very long open space and plenty of tables and chairs; including a lined up line of extra chairs. Next to the ordering counter, it had a traditional Hershey's Ice Cream freezer full of all the current flavors they currently had. On the wall before the cashier counter it had a Bulletin Board for their customers and other local businesses to post their business cards. It also had some wooden shelves with homemade jams, candies, and earrings made by local artists to sell here. As soon as we were in front of the ordering counter a very friendly young lady came out to greet and welcome us, and to take and serve our order. We both ordered a waffle cone with a scoop of the Premium Gold Caramel Cheesecake Cookie Monster. Although the waffle cones didn't seem made fresh there, they were crunchy, and the ice cream was amazingly delicious. We enjoyed eating them in this relaxed and cook environment. We found that this is definitely the place to go for a good cold and sweet treat on a hot Summer day.

Spoiler alert: I ended up getting 2 pints of ice cream for dinner. The price was pretty good, as far as ice cream goes. $8 per carton and that wasn't that bad actually. I arrived here around 5:30pm on a Thursday afternoon. I had just finished my late lunch at Gianni's restaurant next door and needed to find dinner before heading to my airbnb for the night. I didn't want to walk 0.25 miles from my Airbnb to Grandin Avenue later that night, so I just decided to have ice cream for dinner. It worked out very favorably for me actually. I probably spent about 20 minutes here. The ambiance was interesting and felt like a 60's diner. There wasn't much going on at the time, but it was good to be here to be shopping for ice cream. There was a large selection of ice cream that was scratched onto the board in the store. Plenty of flavors but I ended up getting Oreo and chocolate, which was quite heavenly. The restaurant itself was small but clean. Like a 60's diner that kept things true to form. The service was quick and simple while being typical and friendly. I definitely enjoyed and would recommend coming here if you enjoy authentic ice cream in the Roanoke area. For the most part though, the experience here was uneventful. It would be cool if my travels permit me to return here in the future. But for now, I was glad to have come here and experienced the ice cream. I enjoyed the chocolate more than the Oreo, but both were delicious and quite enjoyable. It put a smile on my face for sure. The overall experience here at POP's ice cream in Grandin Village, Roanoke Virginia was very good and made my stomach happy. Although I could have eaten my ice cream at the restaurant, it was close to sunset and wanted to be at my Airbnb for the night before I get lost. It was cool to talk to the dude behind the counter for a couple of minutes before trying to decide what flavors I wanted that day. Just felt a little interesting there, the vibe and the ambiance being there on a random Thursday afternoon being a tourist. It wasn't a long experience here, since ice cream typically is a fast transaction. The flavors change regularly, since they write the flavors on a large chalk board and it seems like it's easy to change at any given time. I love the chocolate of course. Oops. I forgotten that they do have other offerings like actual food items, which I could have bought for dinner, but I was focused on the ice cream, which is very authentic and made in house everyday. If my future travels permit me to return to Roanoke, I will be back to sample other offerings here at Pop's and also try out other flavors of the authentic ice cream that the locals have raved for. Kind of feels like this place is popular with kids and people who love their ice cream. I just happened to come during the slower period, as March isn't usually the time of year to have ice cream in Virginia. For the most part though, my tastebuds wanted the chocolate ice cream for dessert and I was happy to have it on my short trip to Roanoke. Definitely recommended if you are passing through or vacationing in Roanoke, like how I was. POP's Ice Cream and Soda shop is located at 1916 Memorial Ave SW in the Grandin Village district of Roanoke, Virginia. They accept major credit cards as well as cash. As far as parking goes, it is very limited. Your best bet is to find street parking where you can find it nearby in the residential areas and walk on over. It's a walkable neighborhood and doesn't seem like they get a lot of vehicular traffic on any given day. If you enjoy public transportation in the city of Roanoke, you can ride routes 65 or 71 and walk on over after getting off the bus. I got here by walking from the 3rd street bus station, which was 2 miles away. Way to build up that appetite, I guess. The prices here are good and competitive. Supporting local businesses is where it's at here. There's always uber and Lyft if you desire comfort and convenience at your fingertips. If you are here in Roanoke and want to enjoy delicious and authentic ice cream, consider coming over here and enjoy. There's also other things they can offer to enjoy too, but make sure you ask for a menu or else you will miss out on the other stuff Pop's has on their menu. You will not regret it I promise. 5.0 stars for the overall experience. Support local! A+

Pop's has been a part of the neighborhood for almost two decades now. The proprietor greeted us walking in and was setting up for his day. The interior is a time warp back to when things were simplier, more relaxed and just a better way of life, like when sodas were fountain drinks made by hand. Grilled cheese is the thing here, along with hand drawn fountain drinks, crafted ice cream sundaes, a variety of cones, with a tomato bisque and a daily soup. There are hard menus (old school) and a daily broad overhead behind the register. We both opted for the board special grilled cheese, it was a great choice and then a cup of each, the tomato bisque and the potato soup as the daily special. I had a cream soda with my meal and it was like a step back in time, made fresh with the good ice and a fresh head of cream. Its an ice cream shop, how can you not have ice cream after a good lunch? So, after my healthy meal what better than a hot fudge sundae to balance it all out! This is a really rich dessert and so tasty, vanilla ice cream on top of a big fudge brownie, fresh whipped cream, fudge sauce and topped with a cherry, classic. A cool retro vibe, excellent grilled cheese sandwich options, tomato soup always and a huge selection of fountain drinks, sundaes and ice cream combinations. Well worth a stop. 4.5 Stars - rounded up for our gracious host, recommended and I will be back 01051

Yet during the first half of Hispanic Heritage Month this year, I so happened to discover this hidden gem of a restaurant and Roanoke's Best Kept Secret! After being awarded the Triad Yelp Squad Yelper of the Year 2024 Award at the Yelpies Award Ceremony last year, an event that honored the highest-performing Yelp Elites, celebrating their contributions and accomplishments throughout the year, I decided that this year, as an All-Star Yelp Elite, I not only wanted to be the first to discover new restaurants and bring them to the attention of the public, but also to uncover those found in hidden paths that for one reason or another have not reached the public in its totality. And the Super Amanecer Restaurant in Roanoke, Virginia, is a perfect example. It's interesting what led me to this restaurant in the first place. I was talking with a Salvadorian young lady who's very kind and hardworking mother raised 7 children of her own in this country; and she told me that whenever she wants to treat her mother out to eat and asks her where she would like to go, her answer is always: "Al Super Amanecer." Located in Town Square Shopping Mall, a strip mall in Northwest Roanoke, Virginia, featuring a variety of shops, restaurants and other establishments, the Gran Amanecer II Restaurant and Market offers a diverse selection of Latin America comfort foods in a casual and relaxing environment. It has an ample parking lot, where many Hispanics gather in the late afternoon to socialize with their families and friends after work while enjoying some comfort food like pupusas or tamales, or tropical flavor ice-creams in or around their cars. Inside the Restaurant / Market is like another world. They are separated by an entryway and both the restaurant and market have the largest variety of Latin American food than any other place in Roanoke, Virginia. When I entered the restaurant, I was greatly impressed with its cleanliness, simple decor, cozy ambiance, and extensive menu. A friendly young lady greated me at the Host's station and after finding out that I spoke Spanish, asked me where I wanted to sit. I sat at a booth next to the window and then moved to a table because the sun was getting in my eyes. The menu had a great variety of Latin American dishes from places like Mexico, El Salvador, Argentina, and Honduras, among other places. To drink I ordered a Maracuya (Passion Fruit) drink. And as my main entrée I order their Parrillada. I invite you to view my photographs accompanying this review to get a better sense of the place and its food. This dish included chicken, steak, shrimps, 2 chorizos, lime, avocado, roasted jalapeño, rice, refried beans, and pico de gallo. All the meats were quality and cooked to perfection in such a way that it brought out their flavor. For the Grand Finale of this exquisite meal I had Churros with a scoop of ice-cream. They were amazingly delicious though a bit overcooked, thus too crunchy, and lacked the sugar on top, but were decorated so amazingly well, with chocolate and caramel syrup and a cherry, that I enjoyed eating them. Afterwards I went to visit their Supermarket and it too was the greatest thing I've ever seen in Latin American Markets. It had hard to find product at your fingertips, and others you didn't even know they existed. In the back they even had their very own meat department with the meats in the display cases looking tender and fresh In conclusion I highly recommend this restaurant and market for their variety of quality food and products cooked extremely well, and served by friendly staff providing excellent customer service, and an extraordinary dining experience.
