Jalali International Restaurant

Jalali International Restaurant

Jalali International Restaurant (not sure what makes it International, but ok) is one of many curry…read morehouses in Tamworth, but stands out for a few interesting reasons. First of all, the building that houses the restaurant used to be a church, which is very evident from the outside. Secondly, instead of buying a church and working with the old stonework and creating a quiet, candle-lit cafe, Jalali have combined all the loud, colourful charms of Indian decor with a building that isn't quite sure how to handle it. My favourites include: - the 8 foot tall gold-gilt well/fountain in the middle of the restaurant, which is surrounded by mini fish ponds -the piece de resistance, which really can't be described. It covers the entirety of the large, high-ceilinged front side of the building. It's gold, and slightly resembles a high-tech garage door -- with slats of about six inches each -- and is attached to the wall in a curved pattern. We're talking 18 feet W x 25 feet L of shiny golden goodness Why do they have these decorations? One can only surmise. The phrase "delightfully tacky" comes to mind. Jalali's decor is to restaurants what Peg Bundy's clothes is to women. Fortunately, the food and service are great. The food is traditional southern indian, with lots of other traditional curry house offerings -- there will be something for everyone at Jalali. We went there late at night, and the waiters brought us some free onion bhajis as an aperitif, and also gave us free dessert at the end! Very nice. The service is attentive, helpful and friendly, and all the waiters wear matching shirts and ties, looking very smart. The restaurant itself is large and high-ceiling, as its churched past would suggest. There are two function rooms, and Jalali is often very busy with parties, corporate events and Hen nights. It's a fun, unusual way to get your curry fix near Birmingham.

I came to Birmingham from the U.S. to visit family and wanted to dine in at an Indian restaurant…read moresince it is one of my favorite cuisines. Shere Khan in star city is the absolute best Indian food I have ever had. It was so good we went back 2 days later and was not disappointed. The food was not only delicious but the presentation was also excellent. Everything on the menu is a great pick. Some of my favorites are the lamb chops, lamb biryani, the grilled prawns, lamb korma and of course the naan. The mango lassi was delightful as well. We pretty much tried most of the things on the menu and everything was excellent both times we went I also want to brag about the customer service. The waiters were very polite and attentive and got our orders perfect. Arun I'm particular was excellent. Please request him should you go for dinner. He is wonderful and made our experience that much more exciting and enjoyable.

We were a multi-generational family of 7 people excited to have desi food. We were greeted and…read moreseated quickly BUT were only given 3 menus for our group; then we had to request more menus. The order was taken by our waitress in a timely manner. We ordered naan, paratha, and a cheese/onion kulcha. As far as entrees we ordered: Shere Khan Special Combo, Saag Wala with Chicken, Chicken Karahi and Nihari. The special combo only came with one chutney that made no sense so we requested more and were pleased with the taste/consistency of the green chutney. The only items we had that were decent: afghani tikka and machi tikka; everything else was just HORRIBLE. After that dissatisfaction from the platter, we move into the other entrees to be further disappointed. The saag dish was over cooked and the karachi was absolutely the worst I have had. I almost forgot to mention, the fact we ordered the Nihari and it was given to us after a reminder to the wait staff, plus really late. The caveat to this review is... I do travel quite a bit, and for the price we paid for the meal, I am really disgusted! We did pit stop before leaving the restaurant to give them feedback. We learned that the head chef had changed about a year ago. But, despite complaining, we were not offered any compensation. Save your money and don't go!
