    Chefs special mixed starter
    Vicky O.

For my 30th Birthday celebrations, I wanted to do a range of things... Starting off with cocktails at the Prince Of Wales and finishing with a film screening at the Mockingbird Theatre, I thought it would be nice to have a meal in the mix with some of my nearest and dearest at somewhere I had always wanted to visit, but hadn't had a chance to yet. Tipu ended up being a brilliant choice! I had seen it being built several years previously and always wanted to give it a visit. With it's ridiculous over the top decoration and it's tagline of being a "Majestic dining experience", I knew it would be a fun night. My partner (Dan G) booked it all for 20 of us to go down on a Friday night and confirmed with the venue a few times due to changing numbers. They weren't fazed at all by this and seemed to take in all the new info and make the requirement amendments to our booking. We got down there for 7:30 and the majority of the party had already made it along. Weirdly, there was space laid out for 18 (rather than 20), but as we had a couple of last minute dropouts this was perfect. The menu is extensive, but not as pricey as you might think. We opted for a chef's starter platter to share (£16) and was presented by a huge array of meat based dishes from their starter menu. For mains, I had the lamb shank (£10) which was cooked to perfection! The starters are priced from around £4 (you have to pay for poppadoms, but only 65p) and the mains start at a very reasonable £6. The weirdest thing about this venue is that they have no license to sell alcohol, or for it to be consumed on the premises. Not a problem if you are having a chilled night out, but strange for the option not to be there. They do offer a range of milkshakes, lassi's and other non-alcoholic drinks to choose from though; so you won't feel hard done by. The food was fantastic and the bill for the whole table was £320 (about £15 each). You could have a basic curry, rice and naan for two and come away with change from £20 if you wanted, but the food feels superior to this. They were even geared up for people to take leftovers home (as the portions were huge) and didn't even blink an eyelid when we asked. I would definitely recommend a visit to the Sultan. Great food, reasonably priced and good service. I will be back.

I've driven past Tipu Sultan on almost a weekly basis for ages and even witnessed them bringing in some of the quite frankly ridiculous chandeliers before it opened so it's been on my radar for a while. Nestled between Balsall Heath and Moseley on Alcester Road Tipu offers a 'majestic dining experience'. Something I had to try, even just for a laugh. We descended upon them en mass for part of Vicky's 30th celebrations and even though we were quite a large group (18 in the end) the staff did an excellent job, getting everything right even if we were being a bit loud in our celebrations. I shared a mixed platter with the birthday girl to start, each piece was tender and perfectly spiced with the green chicken really stealing the show (I can't remember what it was called... sorry). Then for my main course I went for a lamb dish which was a perfectly spiced and stuffed full of tender chunks of lamb. We also shared a couple of naans, however my eyes were much bigger than my belly and I was eventually defeated. I hate seeing food go to waste but fortunately the great staff were on hand to package up some doggy bags for us. I'd say a good 60% of people I saw leaving the restaurant were carrying their leftovers with them! Fantastic food, great service and at a great price. I'll definitely be back. Although be warned, if you're used to knocking back a few beers with your curry then you'll have to do it before or after if you're eating here. They don't have a licence to sell or for alcohol to be consumed on the premises. But that's only a minor thing really as there are plenty of good drinking establishments in very close proximity.

With an extremely busy Saturday night, we were very well greeted and cared for. The food was superb. Especially the Seekh kabab starter was amazing! Would definitely go again.. great ambiance! Great experience!

Okay this place was recommended to me by a very good family friend of ours. after few weeks of recommendation I visit to this place with my girlfriend to try it out. Was impressed by the decor and that is what the family friend was VERY VERY IMPRESSED by.. , but I am more interested to know how the food is. So here I go,, very good parking space for a starters, very impressive entrace, good receptionist, will take you to the waiting area and ask your name to put down for waiting lists, amazingly assistant manager or LORD of the waiters will take you to your designated seatings, which are very impressive as I mentioned earlier the decor is good, but not very practice in my opinion. So here I was, ordered our first ever order at TIPU SULTAN, we ordered 4 different dishes, lamb biryani, sultani lamb, fish cury and pilau rice with popa dums and king prawns for starter. Popa doms with traditional sauces didn't impress me as it is common in any indian subcontinental restaurant. The king prawns were really yummy like smooth buttery cream. After finishing our popa doms and king prawns, we waited for bit longer than usual for our main course,,, but when it arrived it we just wanted to get started and see how it tasted, I started with pilau rice and fish curry, which was not bad at all. then I tucked into lamb biryani and lamb curry, which tasted different but I wasnt feeling it different from any OTHER restaurant in birmingham. Anyway we ate half of the food and got half left over, so we decided to get it packed and take it home, WASTE IS NOT GOOD. as we went home, i felt really bad in the stomach,,, and 30 minutes or so felt so bad that I threw up all the food, I don't what it was, but my stomach couldn't hold that food in... but I was okay the next morning, no diarrhea or anything like that.... But yeah, in short, I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone for second time.. for the first time yeah good experience, but I am sure when you try it, that is IF you try it, you will see what I mean from this review. So good luck who ever wants to try this place, just because their DECOR is fancy,, doesn't mean they have AWESOME food... its just another asian food place I guess, nothing special

    The party!

Well, thankfully I was warned that they don't serve alcohol, or even let you bring your own, so I had a sneaky beer at home before heading out to this restaurant. I was part of a large group of people out for Vickys birthday and was had a nice corner of the building, although sadly we were sat on two tables. Most of the tables are in booths, which I think is really nice and feels more like a private dining experience. Infact you can't go in without noticing how amazing the decor is! Chandeliers a-plenty and much wood carving-everything on a large and grand scale, which ofcourse adds to the whole dining experience. I thought the service was efficient for such a large party and infact I felt very welcome there. The ambiance was relaxed and happy so I'm guessing others felt the same. Food: many of the starters are really spicy despite not having a chilli sign next to them...unlike the mains which did, but were not hot at all hmmm... I had lamb kebab to start and then a chicken balti and naan. Not very exciting, but a good benchmark I find when trying out somewhere new. My bill came to £12. -amazing how cheap it ca be when you don't drink!;) I had a lovely evening and I think everyone else did too-many people even took home the rest of their meals to finish off at home! I would give this place 4 stars if it served booze though!;)

Manzil's is situated about a minutes walk from the Bull Ring and people in the know who know about curry know what I am talking about with this place. When you walk in, you are met with a homely and friendly atmosphere which makes it a delight to eat in. It's an old school curry house which I love. I really like the wallpaper! I have got to know the waiters as I have visited so many times, who are really chatty and are always happy to see you. If you see Hakeem, he loves his Football! The music they play is so random and unexpected. The last visit I made, they were playing Britpop hits of the 1990's haha On this visit, I was with 4 friends from down south who were visiting me for the day, who are tough critics I may add! I had the Chicken Pakora which was a great starter and just the right size to begin the meal. For the main course I had a lovely Dhansak which was really filling with Pilau rice. Manzil's speciality is their sizzling dishes which provides a good alternative if you are not in the mood for a hearty curry. The biggest surprise came when the bill arrived and we split it. One of my friends said "That price wouldn't even get you a starter which isn't half as good as that in London." Says it all really!

I know it was vegetarian and not spicy - I can't do spicy as much as I try. You get a lot for your money, going for an Indian can be an expensive affair but this was reasonable by the amount of food received. The service as well is excellent, always smiling and helpful. I really must go again, I whole heartedly suggest the rest of you do too.

I had a King Prawn dish and my mate has one of the Chicken dishes, plus we had nan and rice. The prawns were a good size and the both dishes very tasty. Not much chilli at all too, which i liked. The décor is modern, rich in purples and brown, and the room is fairly small. Be good for a groups of 5-6 max in the booths. Definitely would go again.

They do all the curry classics and as well as that have the beer on tap so there's no need to lug around a carrier bag full of cans if you're after a beer or two to wash down your food. As well as that they offer discounts for party bookings which include more than five people, which is great news if you are out with a bunch of mates. Overall another great example of Birmingham's brilliant curry scene.

Chot Poti is a great vegetarian starter dish (although you'll be struggling to eat all of your main course after). It's a chick pea dish with plenty of chilli and toped with crispy onions and egg. The Desi roast is excellent too; the chicken just falls off the bone. The selection of main courses is great. The specials offer something a little different Shobji Chicken and the Chicken Sashlick Bhuna are great as is the Grameen Special Chicken Balti. Our favourite lamb dish is the Haleem which is like a stew with really soft slow-cooked lamb. You can bring your own drinks and there is an off-license right next door. The Decor is contemporary and spotlessly clean. There is an indoor waterfall and a TV that is usually showing a Bollywood film but without sound. The staff are generally pleasant and efficient. Turns out the place is Bangladeshi and so searching for a bit of authenticity I ordered from the fish menu. After the waiter corrected me on my Bangladeshi pronounciation and warned that this particular dish contained bones, I had the option of going for a more familair choice but stuck to my guns and went with the fish dish, much to the combined admiration and consternation of my fellow diners. A large TV played on the back wall be it muted and the water feature really was quite a novel touch which did attract our eye whilst waiting for our food. The fish dish arrived and was tasty and well marinated, working through the bones, I enjoyed the fleshy bits and we all traded dishes to compliment or query each others choices. What we did notice was that a large Bangladeshi family had take the table at the rear and this was another endorsement of Grameen Khana along with the tasty grub.

Although, the owner mentioned that he may be speaking to his butcher about getting smaller lamb shanks because it was a bit difficult to eat due to it's size. I was at a table with 6 people, who all got different dishes (all more reasonable sizes that the lamb shank), and not a single person was disappointed. We finished off the meal with some Persian tea, which the owner was kind enough to offer us free of charge (probably because we were a large group). My first dining experience at Pushkar was purely by chance. I was staying near Brindley Place, and happened to be walking past the restaurant, when I decided to stop and check out the menu. The duck masala sounded interesting, so I decided to try it, and it definitely exceeded my expectations. The thick tomato-based curry had a fantastic flavor profile that consisted of garlic, ginger, black pepper and red chilies. It paired well with basmati rice and a side of raita. Since my first visit, I have dined at Pushkar a few more times, and have always enjoyed everything I have tried. The murgh korma stands out as a rich, creamy, nutty curry dish that is perfect for you if you are in the mood for something less spicy. The innovative desserts at Pushkar are a major draw for me. The gajar ka halwa tart with pistachio ice cream is my personal favorite. The garam masala brulee sounded interesting, but didn't taste too different from regular crème brulee; the garam masala in it was really only a hint of cinnamon. It still was pretty tasty. The chocomosa is a filo samosa filled with chocolate and roast almonds, and is served with a scoop of cappuccino ice cream. Why had nobody else ever thought of creating a chocolate samosa, and if they did, why had I never eaten one before?
