While it was nothing out of the ordinary, there was certainly no room to complain. Staff were courteous and we were encouraged to ask questions about items on an impressive menu. A small seating area for takeaway customers makes the whole thing that much more pleasant. But yet, those empty seats. In fairness, it has nothing to do with standards but sheer saturation of similar. Five or more curry restaurants lurk within a very small distance. The trouble for Shalbon is that they are all relatively high-concept; Panache, for instance, offering a consciously higher-end environment, with Turmeric Jones also trying to trade off a younger, professional crowd. It could also be the case that it's somewhat, perhaps even literally, in the shadow of popular Chinese restaurant Lee Garden next door. It's quite easy to overlook Shalbon and forget it's there. I can't forget it though, there's an aromatic reminder every day. I really should be paying them for the privilege.

The waiter service is very efficient and the staff don't try to rush you out of your seat, as they may do in other independent restaurants. The Chicken Korma I ordered was mild and creamy, yet still flavourful and filling and the restaurant's menu offered a very impressive range of authentic Indian and Bengali dishes. Pretty much the only thing I didn't like about the place was the odd, dark and dingy atmosphere inside. Low-level lighting combined with darkly coloured walls and furniture made it a tad difficult to read the menus and seemed to give off a sort of unappealing, backstreet vibe as opposed to a romantic ambience which could have easily been achieved with a little more light or colour.

Inevitably, two large and more modern venues have opened in front and behind it, both just a few feet away. Then two more appeared along neighbouring Birmingham Road, bridging what otherwise remained a gap to the curries at Beeches Walk. So now there's a clear strip running through the heart of town giving customers much more choice than they had before, all within easy walking distance of each other. Still, even if the business reality has changed, the food and service has not - these are friendly chaps with an easygoing proprietor able to perform his front-of-house role with perfect pitch. You may find the interior a little spartan in design and not the most modern of venues, but what it lacks a little in appearance it makes up for with that all-too-rare of offerings: a licensed bar. That may still be enough to set it apart from brasher contemporarie which possibly lack character and even Sonargaw's slight twinkle in the eye.
