Acting as both neighbourhood takeaway and classy, indoor Indian restaurant, this family-owned…read moreeatery offers high quality Asian cuisine at remarkably reasonable prices. On my most recent visit, my family and I ate in and we all had a very pleasant dining experience. The waiter service is very efficient and the staff don't try to rush you out of your seat, as they may do in other independent restaurants. The Chicken Korma I ordered was mild and creamy, yet still flavourful and filling and the restaurant's menu offered a very impressive range of authentic Indian and Bengali dishes. Pretty much the only thing I didn't like about the place was the odd, dark and dingy atmosphere inside. Low-level lighting combined with darkly coloured walls and furniture made it a tad difficult to read the menus and seemed to give off a sort of unappealing, backstreet vibe as opposed to a romantic ambience which could have easily been achieved with a little more light or colour.

I've been visiting this place on-and-off for 20 years. It's also pretty reasonably priced and caters well for vegetarians, should you have any of those in your number. The staff are friendly and the service is excellent: Rice is served to you, for example, which feels, in the relatively recent history of British Curry, like a quaint touch as it's not something you see everywhere these days. I think that's what I like about this place the most - it hasn't changed all that much over the years. If you fancy a simple, well-cooked meal in cheerful surroundings then I recommend it. The music they play is pretty standard Indian background music that must be on a tape loop. One song sounds like a version of The Irish Rover by The Pogues, so listen out for that. I wonder if Shane MacGowan has eaten here?

The food is perfect as always, with the food always reaching the highest standard as always, I highly suggest this place to anyone looking for an authentic curry.

We visited Shaban just before Christmas 2022. It was not a good experience. The restaurant was cold…read moreand when I asked why it was so cold I was told by a waiter, "It's winter, what do you expect?" No attempt was made to make my family and children comfortable. My children kept coats and hats on for the remainder of the meal. What a joke. We were seated right at the back of the restaurant by the service counter even though the restaurant was empty when we arrived? It became apparent that the rude staff would continue to reach over our heads and serve food or shout orders to each other throughout the remainder of our meal. Appalling. To top it off, the restaurant is running an online service where people walk into the restaurant to collect their orders. Throughout our meal we had people queueing beside our table, leaning against our chairs, paying at the cash register behind our heads. It was horrible. The restaurant needs a specific waiting area for people collecting orders away from guests in the restaurant. Service was bad. Food was slapped onto my mums plate with no care. No food warmers were on the table to keep food warm as other guests seemed to have. My daughters ordered some fried chicken and were given tough bits of chicken on a plate. The rest of the food was just about ok. The restaurant decor is extremely dated and in extreme need of extensive modernisation. I also have to ask whether their were racist undertones to our treatment. Seated at a table at the back of the restaurant where no diner should have been seated. The rudeness of staff and terrible service. All other dinners (white)were seated at the front of the restaurant. As a person of colour I feel that this could have been the case. I would advise anyone wanting to eat at the restaurant to think carefully. There are far superior Indian restaurants in the area. Shaban is not even a patch on these.
