Multiple signs on the wall insisting that customers wash their hands before touching anything. There are a few instruments that I would have liked to check out. But I don't feel welcome to even strum them without my credit card out. No one spoke to me during my visit. I was the only customer. I did overhear another customer being told as I left that they would charge $50 plus the price of a set of string to re-string her nylon string guitar. What a bargain! They must like some folks. But, clearly I didn't make the cut.

So, I took my highly modified, not by me, vibrolux reverb (77) to Austin vintage guitars to get put back to stock. I had already done the filter caps and only needed the circuit to be returned to a stock state. Well, almost $400 later I got the amp back. I did not play it much in the proceeding months when I finally got back to it, I noticed that one of the power tubes was red plating. I opened it up and found some bias resistors were not soldered into the turret holes and one was loose. Now granted a lot of work had been done on this previous to this so those resistors may not have been changed by the tech - but considering how much I paid for this repair, I would assume they would go through the whole circuit and make sure that the amp was sound. The more I look the more I saw what a hack job this was and I could've done this easily with my skills. Although I had heard good things, I was not impressed by the that was done on this amp for nearly half the price that I paid for the amp to begin with. Oh, and the guy helping me at the counter was a total asshole too.

I went back to the room that had the acoustic guitars in. I looked around and kinda fiddled with a couple of them. Again, not knowing anything about guitars or what I was looking for. I came out of the room and an employee asked me if I needed help with anything. I explained to him that I wanted to possibly buy a guitar and that I didn't know anything about them and I've never played a guitar. I told him that I was interested in a couple of them based on looks and what I've been told. He hooked me up with his guitar salesman (Fernando). I explained to him my situation. We went into the acoustic guitar studio/room and I pointed out the guitars that I kinda liked. He took them down and played each one of them to see how they compared. While he was playing, he was explaining different things to me. He took his time with me and was very patient and understanding. He knows everyone is a beginner at some point and time. After about 2 1/2 - 3 hours of testing out various brands of acoustic guitars I was able to make a decision on the guitar that was best suited for me. Then he helped me pick out a guitar case, strap, tuner, stand, etc... I never felt rushed, dumb or an inconvenience to Fernando, he spent as much time as I needed from him. I also met the store manager (Daniel) who was very nice as well. I'll be going back to take guitar lessons from one of their instructors in the near future. All in all, I had a great experience dealing with everyone and buying my first guitar from Guitar Center. I highly recommend them for any and all of your musical needs. I recently took my 6-month-old Collings D-1A (that's a "normal" dreadnaught style acoustic guitar…read morewith an Adirondack Spruce top in place of the less expensive and less spectacular sounding Sitka Spruce top) to a friend of mine who has been playing guitar for decades and has probably owned and played more acoustic as well as electric guitars than 30 normal people. He proceeded to practically rip the strings off it with hot licks, kickin' chords, about 10 different styles of play, and then looked up at me and said, "This is the best guitar I've ever played." Naturally I was thrilled, especially since I'm a relative beginner compared to him. I ordered my Collings the summer of 2007, and picked it up January 2008 after taking a fascinating tour of the factory (just east of Dripping Springs, TX., towards Austin). They give tours once a week at 3:00 p.m., and anyone who plays guitar, regardless of what kind(s) they own, or is interested in seeing how guitars are made, should take a couple hours out of their day and pay the Collings folks a visit. The tour is free, by the way, and they let you take pictures (which I did by the score). Don't expect to see a showroom full of guitars for sale since the demand for them is such that there are simply none sitting around, and don't expect to see a lot of machines cranking out guitars like Willie Wonka's "Everlasting Gobstoppers". What you WILL see are a bunch of true artisans creating works of art which are absolutely flawless. Now....the sound. When I open the case and look at my Collings I am consistently amazed at how benign it looks: it simply looks like a normal guitar...nothing fancy, nothing out of the ordinary. Then I begin playing it and it is simply astounding. Whenever I put a new set of strings on it and play it I do not want to quit. It's insanely loud with so much bass and midrange....oh...and top end, and it's so easy to play. What more can I say? One more thing: Collings guitars are expensive. You won't find one for less than $3,500 and they go much higher than that depending on choices of wood and decoration. But when you own one, you won't look beyond to your next guitar because you'll have arrived where you need to be. Oh....they also make electric guitars as well as mandolins.

I found Collings years ago through a Texan friend and Gryphon Stringed Instruments in Palo Alto, CA (an incredibly wonderful guitar store). I don't know about you. but I over-think larger purchases and Collings ain't cheap, Skipper. So I analyzed the options to death. Finally I hid in a practice room and A-B'd the crap out of a Collings and a Santa Cruz. An easy decision. It's all about the tone in the end. Collings' fine materials and careful craftsmanship end up producing superior sound time and time again. I want another Collings but then I also want to meet Marilyn Monroe. One year I played an $18K carved top f-hole jazz guitar Bill Collings was about to deliver to Gary Trudeau, the creator of Doonesbury. The fact that Bill let me play it says something about what a nice man he is. This quality is in every Collings guitar. I love saying Hello to the Collings guys when I can get a pass into the NAMM show. They have started making electrics, which is a scary thought, because they look and play incredibly as you might expect. There is God and then there is Bill Collings. Case closed

Our daughter played piano her first semester, which ended with a live performance of three songs at the Saxon Pub, presenting to over 100. The next semester she switched to vocals, with a live performance at the Far Out Lounge with her super fun band buddies. The students and teachers take the lessons very seriously but also have a lot of fun. There is one on one instruction blended with small-group instruction. I would say that the instructions provided for instruments (guitar, bass, drums, piano) are a little stronger than the instructions provided for vocals. But no private/one-on-one instructor can provide the super fun, motivating experience of playing in front of a large audience in an iconic Austin venue. That's what makes School of Rock so special for its students.
