They do honor the restaurants name it's definitely is something different!! Not so good. I always review comments and pictures post by reviewers to make sure I pick the right place to eat for my family . The good reviews are deceiving! The place it's ok from the outside , but it's not so nice inside, the bathroom is so bad ( smells horrible ) The food not so good at all. We Had crisp chicken salad, chicken fried chicken it was dry and over cooked . Service was good and locals love the place. Shocking!!!

Found this hidden gem on yelp and so glad i did! we will be back and next time ill bring the whole family- im surprised i hadn't seen it because ive certainly driven by it many times. Its a small local hole in the wall with great homemade food. We simply got our food to go so we could eat it in the car. I tried the reuben sandwich and it's very good- you can tell they butter the bread- it's nice and toasted really perfectly. I thought the chips would just be bagged but they are clearly homemade and delicious. the kids meals are great priced and comes with a drink. We got the kids catfish. We got two desserts to try at home and i took a few bites of the coconut cream and wow it was great- i plan on now getting my holidays pies from here!! you can also buy the entire pie or do by the slice- i'll call ahead and get some for thanksgiving and christmas. The staff were super friendly. definitely give this place some business!! Excited to try different things next time!

When you first step into Something Different, you definitely understand why they have that namesake. The decor is hilarious, certainly not your run-of-the-mill atmosphere. For example, they have a sign that says "complaints button," and it's a mouse trap. We thought that was very cute. The sassy atmosphere put a smile on our face from the second I walked in. We were immediately greeted by a server and told to sit wherever we wanted. The furniture is clearly worn in, but I think it added to the charm of the little cafe. The menu is fairly small, only a few pages. This is extremely smart of them both business-wise and quality-wise, because it means that they can get food out quickly and the cooks can perfect these dishes rather than trying to perfect a hundred of them. And I would personally always rather go to a place that has a few dishes that are perfect rather than a hundred that are so-so (looking at you, Cheesecake Factory.) The menu is mostly beef-based items, though there are a few chicken/fish items. If I recall correctly, there is a page dedicated to burgers, a page dedicated to sandwiches, then a few other pages that had miscellaneous items on it. My partner doesn't eat red meat, but there were enough options that he felt like there was enough to choose from for him as well. We aren't vegetarian, so we didn't look for those options, but they may be more limited. I ordered a patty melt, but I subbed the bun for a sweet roll for a small upcharge. I was told the chips were made in-house, but I opted for seasoned fries for a small upcharge. I will likely get the chips next time. My partner got the chicken wrap with regular (unseasoned) fries. The staff was very, very attentive. I was pleasantly surprised, because we came in only about an hour from closing. I would think that the staff would be tired and not as motivated to give excellent service at that point. But we were consistently waited on and our drinks were never empty. The food came out after a reasonable amount of time. We both LOVED the food. Like, really, really loved -- and we can be picky about food. When I asked my partner again just now what he thought of the food (the next day), he said it was awesome. I had never had a sweet bun with a patty melt before, but it was truly amazing. The seasoned fries were so good that I ate them all, which never happens. I usually leave food on the plate if I think it's so-so. We opted for dessert as well. The waitress began to try to recite the dessert menu from memory, but she pulled out a long piece of paper that had all of the desserts on them. She was nice enough to read them all out, but my partner and I were like, "okay, that was so many items," and we couldn't remember already, haha. So, she kindly left the piece of paper with the desserts on them with us. The desserts list was surprisingly extensive. They are all made fresh in house. There were about 10 different cakes to choose from and 10 cheesecakes, I believe. There were also another couple of random items that I don't remember (maybe cobbler or something?) I got the dark chocolate chip cake, and my partner got the key lime cheesecake. When I asked him again just now how he liked the cheesecake, he said it was "really, REALLY good." He is almost never that enthusiastic about dessert. My own portion was HUGE, especially for the price I paid. I ate about a third of it and took the rest home to eat. It was by and far the best cake I've ever had. That was probably the biggest shocker, that the best cake I have ever had came from a little diner down the road that we hadn't had a chance to stop into until now. I'll definitely come back for my birthday and get a whole cake. The waitress kindly gave us to-go cups on our drinks and brought me a to-go box for my cake. Despite it being so late and near closing, we never felt rushed out -- which is another unique thing, because the rare times that we do eat close to closing, the staff usually tries to not-so-subtly hint that we need to leave. All in all, this will be our new go-to place. We live very close, and I can't wait to come back again. And the cherry on top is that the food is EXTREMELY affordable, especially post-COVID when it feels like everything went up in price. I would highly recommend any locals or anyone passing through to give Something Different a try.

Me and my buddy were working on his property in Buffalo. Working all day we were looking for a hardy meal. We located this restaurant and it was amazing! It felt like I was eating at a friends house, everyone was friendly and greeted us. The female waitress was also friendly and seemed happy to be working at this establishment. The restaurant had a good vibe to it, it seemed like I was home. The sweet tea was amazing and I ordered hamburgers steak with fresh jalapeños! It was outstanding but then pepper were spicy . Finished the meal, attempted to have some of their homemade cake and brownies but I was done. I'm definitely coming back and trying their chicken salad sandwich ! Lots of people were ordering it and it looks delicious. This was a good old place, love TXS!

Wasn't really sure what I was in the mood for so I opted for a turkey melt. OMG it was SO yum!!! The cheese was so gooey and the amount of turkey was perfect! The sweet potato fries were good, though I prefer them a little thicker. It's a quaint little diner with friendly staff and I can see why the locals like coming here. Next time I plan on saving room for dessert.

Easy to get to from the Highway. It was full of locals that the waitresses knew by name. It's a very welcoming environment with really good food. I would DIS-agree with the sign hung near the restroom (see pic). The restroom wasn't fancy but it DID NOT "suck" lol ... because it was quite clean which is a good reflection on the kitchen typically. We enjoyed supporting this mom and pop diner.

We stopped by while in town. First time eating here. Service was nice and friendly. Small cafeteria-diner type place. Not sure why it's called "Something Different" when it's like all the other places around. Lol. We ordered a cheese burger, a chili burger and onion rings. Both burgers came with chips. The cheese burger was over cooked and looked like the meat was cut in half and the cheese was put on the meat to cover it up. The bun was fresh. Burger meat just wasn't appetizing and over cooked. The chili burger was ok. Onion rings were definitely the best thing we ordered. They were hot, fresh and crunchy! Yum! If we ever came back we would order the onion rings again. read more

Looking for something local while traveling in the area and this was a fantastic find! We had the special, which was steak fingers that night - really good, large portion - daughter and I should have shared 1 dinner instead of each getting one. My son got a burger that was huge and delicious too. My more adventurous husband got the Fanny Plate and loved it too. Great service too, even being short staffed that night. Splurged for a couple of fantastic homemade desserts (buttermilk pie & Oreo cake) that were worth it too. read more

Don't judge a book by its cover. The service was fast and friendly. The food was DE L I C I O U S. I would definitely stop here again. I was wondering "what was going to be different about this place?". Well that got answered quickly! The food really was delicious, I am talking about shut up and eat good. I got the Buffalo Joe which was a ginormous chicken breast fried to perfection and the doused in buffalo sauce, served as a sandwich with all the fixin's. I don't know where you went wrong in life but I promise if you stop by Something Different you are moving in the right direction! read more

Had a late lunch with my two sisters here. Had the catfish dinner special and it was awesome! Service was superb as I was a bit chilly but didn't think and requested iced tea. As the waitress was walking away she overheard me talking to my sisters about how silly I had been and next thing I knew she had returned with a glass without ice! They also brewed a pot of coffee as we were leaving and one sister wanted a cup to go. Needless to say we left a great tip and will return to Something Different! Oh and we got two pieces of cake to go and can't wait to try them! read more

INCREDIBLE! We live in Waxahachie and would drive 1 hour just to come back here. The food was just delicious. The adult grilled cheese on grilled sour dough, melted cheddar, grilled tomatoes and bacon....dear Lord...added Turkey and they weren't stingy. Had the best smoked flavor. The burgers have that homemade taste, fresh vegetables and delicious buns. Buttered and toasted to perfection. Seasoned crinkly fries were yummy. Desserts are fantastic. Everything clearly made with love. These gals in here know what they are doing. So glad we stopped by this little gem. Spreading the word to all our friends and family back home who pass through to stop by this place. Shame on anyone who gave this restaurant less than 5 stars. Hell even down to the sweet tea/ice, mmm mmmm! Keep.up the good work and see you guys soon. read more

Stopped in for dinner as we were passing through town and really enjoyed our experience! My husband got the Turkey Melt and loved it. I tried the Rueben and thought it was really good. Their french fries were also so so so good! We also tried the chocolate cake (which was good not great) and then the coconut cream pie which was so delicious! The service was so friendly and fast--it definitely must be a local favorite because the place was pretty much packed the whole time we were there. Happy we stopped! read more

Terrific place! I pulled into the parking lot to turn around one day and saw their sign. Checked Yelp & based on recommendations decided to give it a try. Ordered quesadillas, which were delicious and enormous, and that came with terrific salsa. They hide the baked goods behind the counter, but GO FIND THEM--a huge assortment of home-made pies & cakes is on display. I've tried 4 varieties so far--all great--and will be back for the rest :) read more

It wasn't bad; I just think the name was wrong. There's really nothing different about this place. Yes, it has some desserts, but they weren't "wow" desserts. I had a baked potato and it was fine. They were out of most desserts so my kid got a cupcake and it was a little dry. Overall it's fine, but not anything extraordinary. I just read the owner's response. While I can appreciate the dessert situation, all those things listed as specialty items they serve were not on the menu I looked at. Why not ask servers to promote some of these different things? Not a bad place, just not what I expected. read more

First time here and it was great. Had the buffalo fries and they were yummy. I order their special which was a meatloaf sandwich with a side of mash potatoes. Thumbs up. My husband got the spicy Joe burger thumbs up. My daughter got chicken strips. Biggest chicken strips I have ever seen lol. But it was great and really good prices. read more

Eating lunch here was like stepping back in time to my granny's kitchen The food was the wholesome, homemade variety that used to be standard fare but has become a rarity. My husband and I both had the daily special: steak fingers, gravy, mashed potatoes, green beans, toast, dessert, & a drink. Everything was delicious and the portions were man sized! Usually, there's something that I would tweak in a meal or a dish I think could be improved. Not so here. My only regret (besides the calories that were well worth it!) is that I wasn't hungry enough to clean my plate! The service was very friendly and fast also! Even with a tip included we spent less than $20 for two of us. You can't beat great food at a great price! read more

Took a chance because of the good reviews and so glad we did! Husband got the hamburger and said it was excellent. I had the fried catfish which was a huge amount and had a delicious flavor. We are usually more disciplined and skip dessert, and even though we were stuffed their homemade desserts were just too tempting so we brought some home. We travel 45 frequently and am so glad we tried this little diner. We will definitely be coming back as often as we can! read more

We stopped here for a light lunch. We split the Hot Johnny sandwich and the sweet potato fry. The sandwich was warm and delicious, served with a chipotle sauce. My husband said the sweet potatoes were the best he has every had...thin, hot and fresh. read more

Stopped in on the way back to Dallas from Houston. This place has lots of options to choose from for a restaurant with 10-12 tables. Food was fresh and quick. Tables are for small groups- We had a group of 6 adults and 1 kid and there was not a table for all of us so we had to sit in 2 booths across from each other but that was ok. I ordered the chicken fried steak. The fried okra, onion rings, and sweet potato fries were my favorite sides. White gravy was tasty, especially with the Texas toast dipped in it. Portions were good size. Our server was sweet as pie- speaking of pie, we didn't get to try any because we were so full. I did see a giant piece of chocolate pie at the table of a "regular" that looked amazing. read more

Stopped in for dinner based on the reviews around 7pm on a Sat night. The food was ok for what it was, a chili cheese hamburger and a hot ham sandwich with chips (for the price I would expect fries) a water and a ice tea $15.01. The place was filthy and did not look like it had been cleaned all day. The waitress was nice, and the service was good. Although the other waitress was loudly discussing her personal life with someone else with lots of profanity. We finished our meal as fast as we could, paid and left. We won't go back. read more

Great LITTLE spot in Fairfield! Yes the place is small, but they accommodated our school group perfectly! I had the fried chicken salad and it was really good, it could have benefited from some onions and a thicker or richer ranch dressing, but the chicken was great. Others is the group said the cheeseburger and the chicken fried steak were really good too. I also had the blueberry cheesecake and it was in the top 5 of my life. I would definitely come back! read more

This restaurant was a pleasant surprise on our way from Houston to Dallas. It was a nice small town diner and everything was great. My wife and two kids, as well as myself, all enjoyed our meals. If you are in the area, please stop here and give your money to the locals. You will really enjoy your food as well as the service. read more

This is a super tiny place with limited seating. However don't judge a book by its cover!! The staff were absolutely fantastic and their food was super fresh and so good. My daughter enjoyed her chicken wrap and my salad with grilled chicken was simple and so fresh. Their ranch dressing that they make homemade is definitely one of the best I have had! I did see all kinds of homemade deserts but I didn't have a chance to try any of them however they did look amazing! If you are on the road and needing a quick bite to eat this definitely is the perfect place to escape the fast food stops and get a fresh and delicious homemade meal! read more

On our way to Houston from Dallas stopped and absolutely fell in love. Servers are so sweet and the food is excellent. I had a hot johnnie and was one of the best sandwiches I had in a long time. My friend had buffalo chicken fries and was enough for two. Daughter had steak sandwich and loved it as well. They also have that good ice... deff a must stop!!! You won't be disappointed read more

Food was excellent and the cook was friendly. waitress was rude. We had breakfast. I almost walked out the door without paying. partially my fault and the waitress that never gave us a bill. She could tell by my accent i was not born in texas. Then started giving me the Texas women you dont want to mess with lip. i told her Texas was better with me here. itwould be much better without her. read more

Quick stop on our way home to Kansas from Houston. This is a hidden gem. Conveniently located right off the exit, you'd be a fool not to stop in. Had the Hot Johnnie sandwich with sweet potato fries. Great little find! PLEASE NOTE**If this is your first time here, Yelp has the location and address of Something Different wrong. This restaurant is actually located on the East side of 75 on Hwy 84 behind the Chevron and across the street from Texas Burger and McDonalds. Definitely a much better choice than any of the fast food chains around. I have attached the lunch/dinner menu and kids menu since they don't have a website. If you're getting togo, call it in as they make it to order and it's not quick. read more

History

Established in 1985.

The building started out as a Pit Grill when it was bought out by the original Something Different Restaurant owner. Who kept with the diner style food made from scratch and added homemade cakes and pies to the menu. Close to 30 years later the owner decided to retire and closed the restaurant then the baker who has baked here for almost 30 years reopen the restaurant and continues to bake all the homemade desserts to this day. The diner has always been family ran with strong traditions. We are all very close to our customers with our family dining atmosphere. We hope y'all come in and see for your self and experience what a small town diner can have to offer.

This time I was able to arrange to be here on a Saturday expressly to visit Leona. It was a 2 hour drive down from Dallas but hey, it's an adventure! I was not disappointed. I got there about an hour before they opened and there were 30-40 people in line already. I grabbed a spot on one of the benches that line the porch and watched more people pouring in. Over the next hour the line got longer and longer. I definitely got there none too soon. At opening time the nice lady came out and started bringing in each party one at a time. It moves fast and I was seated pretty quickly. The place is pretty huge so they seat a lot of people at a time. Judy Lee was my very sweet server and she kept me checked on and my tea glass full the whole time The "salad bar" is pretty simple. Just lettuce with a few tomatoes and the obviously homemade dressings. There is also slaw which was VERY good. The steak came with a scoop of mashed potatoes and a yeast roll. The streak is definitely the star of the show. The standard size is 10 oz with the option to add additional oz's. I opted for a 14 oz version which was probably closer to 20. They don't cut you short by any means. I have to say that this was one of the best and most perfectly cooked steaks I have ever had. I have had my share of prime restaurant steaks and this rivaled them all. Juicy, tender and perfectly cooked. It had the largest rib cap of any steak I have ever seen. Simply delicious. A 4 hour round trip for dinner might be a bit much but really worth it for the experience. If I find myself somewhere a little closer I'll be doing it again.
