She is a professional, caring, supportive vet who worked with us closely to monitor and treat our cat. I credit her and her staff for the fact that Bo is still with us two years later. We went to Somerset Veterinary Hospital while visiting family in the area. Long story short, our dog was very sick after being boarded at a different facility. From the beginning, Somerset was welcoming and compassionate. Every person we interacted with at Somerset was kind, took their time explaining things to us and gave our dog Maggie the best care. Being that it was an emergency situation, we found their pricing and accommodation very fair. I would not hesitate to recommend Somerset Vet Hospital or visit them again. read more

Very angry. Was charged $35+ for "boarding for 1 day". Due to the COVID-19, they do curbside pick up for your animals. It was 90 degrees outside so we went to get some ice cream @ wallabys. (Literally right next door). The vet called 20 minutes later to inform me what was wrong with my dog. I told her that she is my service animal and I can get her and bring her back to the restaurant. SHE SPECIFICALLY told me that my dog could stay there until we were done. We were gone less than an hour and we did NOT move our vehicle because the restaurant was next door. They refuse to give me a refund after not telling me the charges. They couldnt even offer a credit to her next visit. I have spent in total almost 500$ at this clinic. DO NOT COME HERE they will lie to you & refuse a refund for charges that were NOT meant to be made. read more

Super rude staff with little regard for the pets, especially the one vet I had. This place seems far more concerned with racking up a bill than actually making helpful suggestions. They wanted to run several expensive tests on my healthy kitten who was there only for a new patient exam. There was no reason offered for why these tests were necessary, especially because the vet said she was in perfect health. I consulted a family member who is a veterinarian and was told that these tests are only done when a diagnosis for certain parasites or other conditions is needed, and there obviously was no reason to believe she had any of this due to her stellar health and already being dewormed three times out of precaution. Perhaps one of the worst parts of the visit other than the horrendous bill was from the vet techs in the back cursing up a storm and making rude comments toward other guests. I then heard them say that they needed to give (my pets name) a sample some of their cat food so that they could have me purchase it from them. They were talking poorly of my current food that I give her, even though it is very expensive and holistically made, unlike Hills Science Diet that they were promoting. When one of the vet techs came out to hand me the sample I asked if my current food was adequate for her and she said she didn't know anything about it and that I should just go ahead and switch her food. Why would I switch her food when you can't even tell me what's wrong with my current food for her? What a joke. I left this place and immediately started crying for trusting them with my kitten. This place is awful, and I will never be back. I will also make sure everyone with a pet knows to never come here. Do yourself a favor and save time and money by choosing one of the many other vet clinics in Ames. This place is absurd. read more

I like this place, love Dr. Flaming but lately, the focus has been shifted more on the money. I would like how they take care of my two pets and they are handled well so far in the last 2 years or so things have changed. I know its expensive to maintain the clinic at Somerset but come on it Ames you cannot charge me NY prices.. $60 for a fecal test which I am not sure I agreed to it? my dog got vaccinated of course you know he will be in pain the next day or so it will not harm you to suggest an over the counter pain med. I don't mind driving but I would save money if you get the stuff OTC instead of asking you guys ..Think a bit more about the owners and suggest them cheaper options not everything worth the price... read more

These folks have been great! We have an aging cat (Harley) with kidney disease and they have done as much as they can to try and make our situation sensible and reasonable. Dr. Flaming is top notch and has been very accommodating for our cat and my wife providing next options/steps and what to expect going forward. I have worked at many vet clinics and am very picky when it comes to vets (I'm a vet student) and I can honestly say I would rather take my pets here than any clinic back home in Iowa City! Dr. Rivers is caring, compassionate, knowledgeable, but also humble, and if she's not sure about the answer to something she isn't afraid to tell you she's not sure but she'll do more research and get back to you. Not all vets have that quality, and it's an important one. I also was present for the euthanasia she performed on my roommates elderly cat, and she was patient, kind, and explained every single step. She helped confirm it was the right time, and eased any last minute doubts. I can honestly say I hope to be even half the veterinarian that she is someday! read more

BEWARE OF THIS VET!! We used to think they were very good but have had some bad experiences the last 6 mos. First, we received 2 doses of Heartworm medication that were over 1 year old for our dog. Next, we took our dog into the vet for injuries received by another person. The person who injured him called me to tell me she spoke to the vet without us releasing information to anyone else. The vet denied that this happened yet the person who injured our dog had accurate information about the visit and diagnosis. When I complained about a breach of confidentiality, they denied it, supported the vet who saw our dog, yet said "But I support you"! I still do not believe that information was not released and was very disappointed with their response! Last, our dog had very loose stools for awhile, and I called about it. They told us to use Fortiflora, which we did to no avail. When I called back again about it, they suggested the same thing, with no other possibilities even though I told them we had been using Fortiflora. We took our dog to another vet who did a fecal sample and our dog had an intestinal infection which was cured with antibiotics in a matter of days! All said, a reason for caution with this vet! First off, I'm only giving this clinic one star since Yelp will requires me to and I can tell you, they don't DESERVE one star at all... I would NEVER, NEVER recommend this clinic to anyone who truly loves their pet and wants the best care for their pet. My dog was misdiagnosed by Melissa Rivers when he encountered a happy tail injury and therefor had part of his tail amputated, instead of actually removing his whole tail to ensure the bacterial infection was contained. Because of her (lack of) knowledge and her ego, my dog ended up dying due to DIC/sepsis after suffering inadequate medical care from Somerset. He suffered 4 months of fighting an infection while being improperly medially managed by Rivers. Melissa Rivers convinced herself and others my dog had IMHA, an autoimmune disease, and therefore was placed on oral steroids for his "autoimmune disease". Recently graduating from the vet school from ISU, I can say with 100% confidence how poor of a veterinarian Melissa Rivers is and how poor quality her practice of medicine truly is, and how poor Somerset is as a veterinary clinic. Instead of seeking help from fellow colleges and saying "I really don't know what is going on, but we can try x, y, or z" she instead convinced herself my dog had an autoimmune disease and persuaded treatment. I was an idiot for even trusting her or any of the staff at Somerset with my dog's care. During these 4 months, I never heard back from Somerset asking how my dog was doing. The only time I received a phone call was when I decided to seek care from a different veterinarian at home in a different state. They couldn't bear losing business or money. My dog was placed on oral prednisone because of his "autoimmune disease" and I happened to leave it in Iowa while driving back home. I called Somerset to ask them to call in a prescription while I was back home, which is out of state. Dr. Felz replied by saying "he (my dog) should be okay without a dose of prednisone for a few days". For any veterinarian or anyone with a medical background being on oral prednisone (steroids) has detrimental affects to the body. It requires a TAPERING dose to be weaned off the medication. You cannot go cold turkey and decide to stop taking the medication. The day my dog ended up dying (on a Saturday), I initially called Somerset to bring him in and seek medical care. However, Dr. Felz had the nerve to say to me "I'm going to be busy soon. Your dog sounds fine and probably is in pain. He should be able to wait till Monday". Well long story short, I ended up at the vet school where CPR was performed on my dog, yet it was too late at that point. After the traumatic weekend, being a veterinary student myself, each referring veterinarian receives a copy of any pet that is deceased/euthanized at the school to inform them of the recent events. However, NO sympathy card or phone call was received from Somerset after my dog had passed away. This clinic is by the worst veterinary clinic I've been to (and I've worked as technician for 10 years and recently graduated from the veterinary school). There is no such thing as basic care at this clinic. How many times do they take the temperature of your when you go in for an annual visit. Take my advice, DO NOT TAKE YOUR PET TO THIS CLINIC. Unless you want your pet to be misdiagnosed and eventually die. read more

One morning I woke up to my cat having trouble breathing. All of the other vets in the area could not fit me in until late in the afternoon. When I called Somerset, they said they were booked as well - but they told me to come in anyway, and they found time to look at my cat almost immediately. The doctor & the staff were extremely professional, laid out the options honestly, and were extremely thoughtful when a difficult decision had to be made. Dr. Felz and Dr. Rivers have seen both of my cats, and they are phenomenal vets. Skilled, attentive, knowledgeable, accommodating... Just fantastic. One of my cats had a mini-emergency, and Somerset was willing and able to squeeze us in to their busy morning schedule with essentially no notice, and my cat was expertly assessed and treated. So I normally don't write reviews but I have been taking my kitten here for months and up until I got her spayed and front declawed it had been great. The place is clean and inviting, the doctors and staff are friendly. But when I picked my kitten up from her procedure the following day she was not taken care of how any animal should be cared for. She smelled of urine and feces like she had been sitting in it all night long. They told me she was an "uncooperative" cat and they didn't give her pain medicine throughout the night like they had originally said they would. They also hadn't fed her anything, which they had her npo the midnight before her surgery. They then told me no bathing for two weeks. I'm sorry but when your cat has matted feces in her fur that's not an option. I got her home and immediately gave her a sponge bath which she cooperated like any cat of course that hates water, then fed her food and easily was able to squirt a tiny drop of pain medicine in her mouth while she was eating. Please tell me how it's acceptable to let a cat or any pet suffer in pain and lie in her own waste? I am not happy and will not be returning for my vet services. read more
