Florida Keys has many beaches but, believe it or not, there are not a lot of nice beaches in the Conch Republic. Most Florida Keys beaches are rocky or have no sand--with the warm ocean or gulf water lapping amongst the mangrove roots. Sombrero beach is a nice area to relax and spend the day. They have plenty of parking but you will have to pay. There is a fenced grassy area before the beach where you can picnic and barbecue. There are also restrooms and a children's playground. The beach itself is nice, but the shoreline is very thin (especially at high tide) and packed with people, so there's not a lot of space to spread out and enjoy yourself. Probably the best beach we visited while in the Florida Keys. The keys doesn't have many sandy stretches of beach to begin with so this was a nice gem to find on the southern tip of Marathon. The beach is not huge but enough to stretch your legs and walk up and down, plenty of room for everyone to still spread out. Lots of nice, white sand and plenty of shells and coral to pick through. When you are done with getting sandy, the beach offers a nice playground for the kids and plenty of shelter to have a picnic or sit to people watch. Just up the road is a Publix and strip mall with various stores, so you can just buy anything you need for the beach without having to stuff your car full from your hotel/resort. Buy a Publix sub and some chips and you are set for the afternoon. Bathrooms onsite were clean and well-stocked. Parking is pay by the hour and they are hawkish at checking times so don't skip on paying. The app makes it very easy to do. If we come back to the keys, we will make sure to centralize ourselves to this beach since it was one of the best we visited while touring the Florida Keys. read more

A beautiful little beach in the Florida Keys, having traveled to the Keys for many years and being a resident of Florida I definitely understand that there are really beautiful beaches across the state - this beach may not rate in the top 10 across the state but very well could be one of the best in the Keys. Lots of sun and shade here and wonderful amenities including close proximity parking to the beach, clean restrooms, shelters with picnic tables and charcoal grills, a playground for the little ones and plenty of sand, clear water and palm trees filled with coconuts, yea I admit the sea grass can be annoying but that's part of the Keys just as the coral is but none of this is a deal breaker for me. If you visit any of the State Parks here you'll notice they don't manage or clean up the sea grass it's considered an essential part of the ecological health of the Keys. I noticed that on the day I visited this beach it was not an issue to the point that it could ruin my experience, it's late November it's sunny and 77 degrees - I don't remember ever having a bad day at any beach so I'm not going to complain about this one, I feel I'm pretty lucky to be here... read more

Best beach we have found in the keys so far. It has pretty of parking. The beach has a private entrance with a fence in park with volleyball arena , gazebos , bbq area, playground and bathrooms. Wow! One of the cleanest, calmest and quiet beach you can find! Soft powder white sands and literally just a foot step away from the turquoise waters. No trash, bathroom and shower available. The Keys may not have fantastic beaches but we enjoyed our time at this one. There isn't a ton of beach area but the sand was nice enough. The waves and current were pretty rough during our visit but the water was warm-ish. There was also very little trash on the sand. Parking is NOT free. I think we paid $10 for two hours--you pay at a little pay machine. The price is a little steep but it is what it is. Personally, I didn't see any warning signs about jellyfish but I guess there are such signs so watch yourself out there. No lifeguards here so watch your kiddos in the water. There is a nice walking path and indoor restrooms on the property. Dogs are welcome on a lease. They have dog poop bags available. Beach tucked away off the beaten path... This is a nice beach on the Keys. We stopped here at this beach in Marathon Key to watch the sunset. Lots of people... so different from Anne's Beach where we first made a stop. Sombrero Beach is mangrove-free!! BUT there are warning signs to watch out for jellyfish! I guess the Portuguese man o' war are rampant here. Yikes! With its soft sand on this long stretch of beach and warm turquoise waters, it is one of the best-kept beach secrets in the Florida Keys. It was a lucky find. I did not go on the water but started collecting sea shells. The shells were cute and tiny then I realized I didn't have anywhere to keep or hold them so I let them go in the water. Parking can be challenging since this is one of the prettier beaches before heading to Key West. Well maintained park with bathrooms and showers available. After driving for hours down the Keys, we finally came across a beach that did not smell and was not covered in mud! Sombrero Beach was fantastic - attached to a beautiful little park with playgrounds for children, a sand volleyball court, bathrooms, outdoor showers/rinse off stations, and a small dock for fishing/boating. The beach and swimming area was just as good! The sand was soft and gave plenty of room to set up a few chairs and an umbrella. The busier part of the beach is the south end, but "busy" wasn't as crowded as you'd expect! The water was very clear, warm and shallow. Perfect for children, dogs, to run around in without fear of going too deep. We spotted a few people snorkeling farther out, looking at various fish and creatures out in the sea grass. This is a decent little beach hidden in the back of a Marathon neighborhood. It's definitely small and don't expect it to look like most Florida beaches, because that's just not how the Keys beaches are. Nonetheless, it's very enjoyable and will help you get your sun/ beach fix that you are craving. The water is gorgeous and the views are still up to par. They have a rinse station but when we were there (December 2020) they did not work. There's also bathrooms and a water fountain that does actually work. As well as a small playground for the kiddos just off the beach and some sitting/ picnic tables, so it really does have a lot of stuff to be able to spend the better part of a day. Date of visit Sept 27, 2022 Nice family beach area. There are lots of pieces of equipment for kids to play. A large parking area. They had areas to sit down for a picnic. The beach has different areas. On one part the water is shallow water with some rocks and areas to kind of wade out, feed birds. The other area is more of a traditional beach area. Sadly as usual in this area the water is kind of murky with brown seaweed in some areas. It is worth going to if you want quite a bit to do at one area while visiting a beach. read more

We were exploring in Marathon (middle keys) when we saw the sign saying Sombrero Beach and decided to check it out, The Florida Keys are not known for their beaches. Most are packed dirt brought in or a bunch of jagged coral rocks with mangroves. This beach turned out to be the exception. A good beach! And it will be even better (and rate more stars) once all the repairs have been done (following Hurricane Irma). Right now the children's play area is still under construction and roped off. But there is free parking and restrooms. As you walk up the path, you'll see the sea oats are protected by ropes, too, so no one disturbs the plantings. Past the oats, there is a long sandy strip of beach on the Atlantic Ocean. It's perfect for swimming and sunbathing. The beach is about 3/4 of a mile long. Very unusual sight for the keys. The park and beach are open from 7:30 in the morning until sun down. But they do restrict access during Turtle nesting season which is April through October. If you're in the area, and looking for something different from your hotel pool it would be worth a visit. Just bring your own snacks and supplies as there aren't any food outlets or concession stands to rent chairs, etc. read more

Sombrero Beach is like a little slice of paradise with a dash of reality. The white sandy beach is gorgeous, and the water is so clear and calm it feels like nature's infinity pool--perfect for swimming, especially if you're traveling with kids or just really bad at swimming (no judgment from me!). There are picnic tables and shady spots, so you can snack like a pro while pretending to care about sunscreen reapplication. Bonus points for being pet-friendly so your dog can also live their best beach life. It's a quick 5-minute drive from US-1, and parking is free. The beach can get crowded, especially during peak season, so prepare to make new friends whether you want to or not. Seaweed sometimes crashes the party, but the city works hard to keep it under control. Still, you might find yourself in a seaweed vs. sandcastle showdown. The restrooms (not super clean) and showers are close to the parking lot, so that's convenient. read more
