Totally Inept and incompetent. I've been a patient at Summit Health in Berkeley Heights for years, and while I've generally had a positive experience with most doctors there, almost every interaction from the start with Dr. Soma Mandal has been awful. She isn't responsive to concerns, doesn't seem to pay attention to details, seems uninformed (as she sits looking up symptoms on her computer during your appt), has been aggressive, and actually screamed at me a number of times for issues that I expressed to her- including labs not being transferred from one provider to another, and her skipping a teledoc appointment that her office had scheduled with me. More importantly, she missed an abnormality that showed up on a lab until 3 year later, and failed to treat another issue after repeated lab results indicated unfavorable results. I hope to spare anyone else having to deal with Dr. Mandal. read more

I had been feeling rather ill for a while, and after a disastrous visit with a doctor at Beth Israel I was desperately looking for a good PCP. I found Dr Mandal totally by chance. And I was able to get a new patient appointment within a few days - totally unheard of. I find her intelligent, friendly, and caring. She was very helpful and answered all my questions. At first I was slightly thrown off by the tiny size of Dr. Mandal office. On the day of my visit, her assistant was out so it was literally just her and myself. Nonetheless, I realized that the major upside of this was the great personal attention that I received from Dr. Mandal. I don't understand why not all practices/businesses/organizations use an online scheduling system like Dr. Mandal's. I *hate* that back and forth with a receptionist over times they have free versus what I can squeeze in during work hours. Anyway, PHPC's location is really convenient if you're coming in from Jersey on the PATH, I've never had to wait for very long, and Dr. Mandal takes the time to answer all my questions, the exam isn't rushed at all, and I'm still in and out within 25-30 minutes. She'll also call in prescription renewals for me at my emailed request, no forcing you to come in for a visit just to get a prescription renewal, and she's really prompt about returning any emailed questions in general. Overall just a really great fit for what I'm looking for: convenient in location and appointment scheduling, competent, efficient service, and using modern communication methods. read more

The greatest advantage about seeing Dr. Mandal is convenience. Making appointments is always a struggle, but Dr. Mandal utilizes an online appointment system which allows you to receive reminders and book appointments ASAP. I never have to wait 2 weeks for an appointment, I can easily be seen the day of or during the week if I want. Dr. Mandal is also very thorough in examinations and makes me feel comfortable whenever I see her, which is one of my factors in determing the right doctor for me. Convenience is key these days and making an appointment with Dr. Mandal is super convenient and confidential. I can make my appointment at my desk at work without worry of eavesdroppers and quickly get my confirmation via email. Her practice is located near a numerous subway stations, so its easy to get to. Every New Yorker knows, getting in to see a physician on short notice and at a time convenient to you is almost unheard of. I've been to Dr Mandal twice before this experience and both times were positive. However, my most recent experience with her will certainly be my last. Since I was going on a cruise in a few weeks, I did some research and read that I might need a vaccine or anti-malaria drug. I talked to the receptionist who was very nice and she said she'd call me back telling me if I did indeed need an appt at all for a vaccine or anti-malaria drug. I called back the next day (since she didn't return my call yet) and I gave her all the information again and she said she will find out and let me know. She did call me back at the end of the day and said I needed to come in for an anti-malaria prescription. Since I was traveling with my boyfriend, I recommended Dr Mandal to him. He called to make an appt and mentioned that he was my boyfriend and that he would also need an Rx for the anti-malaria drug. He was told that he would be charged $150 for a "travel consultation fee" and he declined because of the cost. I then called and spoke with the receptionist myself to clarify. I was told that he could come in but even though he had an insurance that they accepted, he would be charged $150.00 for a "travel consultation" since he was not already an existing patient. I told her he wanted to become a patient and that he also needs to have a physical exam done. She said he could do that, but it would have to be first and that he would need to make a second appointment to come in for the Rx for "billing". The receptionist also explained that because I was an existing patient, the doctor would "waive" the "travel consultation fee" for me. She also told me that it was up to Dr. Mandal if she would also waive the fee for my boyfriend even if he made an appt and then a second specifically for the Rx since "insurance doesn't cover travel medicine, she really does this as a favor to her existing patients". I thought was insane and told her "it seemed like a money making scheme to me". My boyfriend found another doc the same day that saw him and gave him the Rx all for an office copay of $20. Later that night I received an email from Dr Soma Mandal and she wrote the following: (which I am quoting; copying and pasting her exact words) Hi Gina, It was after I left a voice mail for you that my assistant let me know a discussion between you and her. She informed me that you perceived charging your boyfriend for a travel visit as a "money making scheme". In fact, I opt not to charge my existing patients and really should be charging for this type of visit since insurance doesn't cover this. I didn't appreciate the comment since I don't run my practice that way. I also feel uncomfortable continuing our doctor-patient relationship. I think it is best if you find your healthcare needs elsewhere and I am going to go ahead and cancel your appointment. You can get emergency coverage for up to a month, if it is necessary. Dr Mandal is a very responsive doctor who takes a thorough history on the first visit. I relocated from CA and left my family medicine doctor who I had been with since birth. Dr. Mandal was an easy transition because she communicates by email, is easy to reach, and has a very efficient office manager who books my appointments quickly. Further, Dr. Mandal sends prescription refills directly to my pharmacy, mostly without any need to actually come in. This has been a huge time saver. I'm going to India on a business trip and Dr. Mandal took care of all of my vaccinations and medications that I might need on the trip. She was very personable and shared with me tips on how to stay healthy. Overall, she is a very knowledgeable woman with a great network of specialists in case you may need a referral. I am a nurse and I was very sick ( felt like a bad cold) in November 2016. She did not listen to my medical history and explanations ( she had a bitter mood and angry appearance ). She said it is a virus and no meds needed. After a week, I informed her that I am getting worse and she called in antibiotics for me. It did not improve anything . She did not follow up at all . SHE REFUSED TO BELIEVE ME THAT I AM SICK and my so-called cold got worse. Finally, I decided to see another doctor who ordered a CT scan. YES.... I HAD A SEVERE PAN SINUSITIS and was close to be hospitalized for surgery. It is May 2017 and finally I am feeling normal. After my insurance changed, I was in need of a new Dr. I looked online, cross referenced who my insurance would take, and made a bunch of calls. A number of doctors on Fifth Avenue in Greenwich Village did not return my messages. Not only was Dr. Mandal's office the easiest to deal with, they were also the most professional.
