Paris boasts a multitude of extraordinary restaurants to choose from, but I was happy with my choice to enjoy my birthday dinner at Sola - our unique dining experience here was a fantastic way to celebrate! Sola is located in the Latin Quarter of Paris, just south of the Notre Dame Cathedral. The entrance is tucked away down a quieter street; unsuspecting from the outside, you first see the classy French-style restaurant on the ground floor, but the real treat is when you are taken down to the basement where they have a Japanese-style room essentially in an underground cave! You exchange your shoes for slippers and then shuffle your way over to a table that is inlaid into the floor, making it reminiscent of sitting on a tatami mat. The lighting is dim and romantic and the atmosphere still feels very upscale. The menu was given to us in a personalized envelope at the beginning of the meal, which was a nice touch and souvenir! Our meal had 9 courses total - they offer a prix fixe degustation menu that is always changing so I won't go into extensive detail, but each course was artfully presented and plated beautifully. One of the desserts even came in a glass (but wasn't for drinking)! The French and Japanese flavor combinations were creative and delicious. My absolute favorite dish was a the foie gras with black truffle over poached egg - the taste and texture were perfect, and each bite felt like it was literally melting in my mouth. Some close seconds were the amuse bouches of fig and foie gras (perfect mix of sweet and savory) and tempura corn (simple yet tasty), as well as the main dessert, which had meringue chips and an earl grey foam. Even the more basic seeming dishes - salmon, beef, langoustine - were enhanced by the accompanying sauces. Service was on point throughout the entire meal, with our glasses refilled, utensils replaced, dishes cleared, and each course described in English by one of the servers. As an added plus, they provided a complimentary birthday dessert! One of the few mishaps happened towards the end when we were trying to get our check and flagged down two different people, then after paying with one of them, the other person asked us if we had paid before leaving...fortunately, another employee stepped in and apologized profusely afterwards. Overall, besides the blip at the end, dining here was one of the highlights of our trip to Paris! Would definitely recommend for celebrating a special occasion or if you're looking for something intimate and a little different for a nice night out.

This review is for my visit on November 2018. I saw this restaurant at instagram and I want try out since I never tried French/Japanese cuisine. Prior to my visit, I made online reservation for cave seating. However, when I visit the restaurant, its pretty empty and I don't think reservation is strongly recommended. I would say most dish was pretty decent but I would not say it was spectacular since this is 1 star Michelin restaurant. Pro: #1 I can choose my own sake glass (interesting) #2 Location- its nearby Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris, before our reservation we walk through cathedrals and it was perfect route for tourist like me. Con: I could not finish duck at all. It was main and last dish for the night, its really rare and hard to chew.

An amazing dining experience of traditional french foods and flavours infused with traditional Japanese flavours and cooking technics. Truly the best dining experience we had in Paris. I had the 7 course for 70E and which actually was about 10 courses with the extras and I was very very full. The basement has a cozy cave setting.. But you need to make reservations here.

I liked this and I had fun puzzling it out with my friends. We did not do a very good job! It was hard to guess the ingredients and I think they purposefully try to fool you a little. I have photos of each course but I don't remember all the details. We had 6 courses. There was a small starter of a bao bun; mine was markedly less filled than the others on the table, so the proportions were off and I felt shortchanged. Then we had a fish course, a course with savory ice cream and some bread (like cornbread), a mushroom "pate" course, a cheese course (one big slice of cheese), and dessert (ice cream and apricots?). I felt like everything (taste, texture, ingredient quality and variety) were good but not great, especially since they are making things easier on themselves by doing fixed menus. Staff tried to explain what all the dishes and ingredients were, and they did good but not great job. They spoke English but didn't always know the English words for specific ingredients. The ambiance was fine. We were at a long, narrow communal table on the first floor just next to the kitchen and the door. It was a little cold from people coming in and out and a little busy with all the staff moving around. It wasn't the most refined or relaxing atmosphere.

Everything was innovative and delicious (I'm sure the menu changes regularly). They accommodated my gluten allergy and I had the best gluten free bread that I've ever had (made fresh just for me!). We had an outstanding server who taught us a ton about interesting wines as we opted for the wine pairing too. I read some reviews about price point, but it was much cheaper than Prix Fixe in SF, Chicago and NYC where we dine regularly and the portions were big. The vibe was cozy and we enjoyed walking around the neighborhood before hand.

When I asked why, she said, "They're crunchy." My eyes lit up. As a vegan I crave crunchy food because so much plant-based food is soft. Evian was right! This roll had texture. It was beautifully presented in eight pieces. Upon the first yummy bite it was apparent this was cooking at another level. The fry was perfectly light and clean. Each bite substantial. The taste memorable. I have never had a sushi roll like it and now I want to live inside the restaurant so I can have it forever. We also got five pieces of the yummy Seitan Crispy, which comes with a lovely Doenjang sauce, that is thick and flavorful. These unique, protein boosts are also cleanly fried, delectable and filling. Lastly, my husband got the small BBQ Donburi which was a bowl of rice, a flavorful bbq soy protein, and some mesclum. He loved it. We sat outside on the lovely side street and chatted with Evian who made our dinner a memorable experience. I highly recommend this restaurant and wish I could bring it back to America. This place was not only a hit with my kids but was fast, delicious, and healthy, as healthy Chinese food gets. The place is extremely clean, the food is great, and the service is fast and very friendly. When we walked in we were immediately seated. The staff were very friendly and didn't mind that we only spoke English. They immediately switched to English from French and conversed with us, no problem. Our food came out fresh and hot within minutes. The vegetable wok was large and very tasty. My kids had the gyoza and fried noodles with crispy chicken and ate every bite. They kept remarking the entire night that they were so full. For a family of four with four main courses, an appetizer, and four drinks, we paid €72. They have seating all throughout the restaurant. If it looks full from the entrance, still ask for a table because they have a very large rear seating area. I honestly want to taste all of Paris but this place was so good in both its food and service that it's hard not to keep going back. If you go, you will not be disappointed. Enjoy! P.S. my son loved the straws. They look like stalks of bamboo.

I always like to think that places that are packed means the food is good. Well... that wasn't the case, at least not for me. Firstly, the server was extremely rude, by his attitude alone you could tell he didn't want to be there. When I was deciding between two dishes I asked him which one he recommended he responded with "I don't know it's up to you" um what? I then said okay, what's your favorite dish? He said "I don't know, it could be good for you or it could be bad for you. It's up to you" ...Right, so how does this answer my question? Not only was he clueless but his tone was miserable. We then asked about beers, again he didn't know. I mean even if you don't know could you go ask? Or can you pretend like you have a clue? And no it's not that he didn't understand me, he spoke perfect English and understood everything I was saying, he definitely seemed American to me. The food was just alright, prices were average. I could have spent my money elsewhere with better service which I would have preferred. Still confused as to how it has 4 stars but I won't be back again.
