In fact, he provided me with more information that any other optometrist or ophthalmologist I've seen in the past. I had an initial exam, then scheduled another exam the following week to have my pupils dilated for a better look. I'm trying to find out if my "floater" is a big deal. Everything turned out ok. My Rx for progressive lenses was bumped up a little bit. I found a few beautiful frames and narrowed it down to Prada. There are many gorgeous designer frames. Dr. Tu helped me choose some. He claims to be very fashion conscious as well. :) I'm impressed that he also took the time to explain all the lens options. He took my measurements. I used my Yelp! discount and he upgraded my lenses with no extra charge. It took 7 business days for my glasses to be ready. He adjusted them for perfect fit and offered me 50% off an additional pair within 3 months. I might consider sunglasses . He can direct bill the insurance companies.

Sadeeq, the Observatory's retail manager, was very helpful in recommending styles that would be of interest, and when I asked if I could have the store hold the glasses for a couple of months, they were happy to do so for a small deposit. I finally went in for my fitting a few days ago, and the service was just as good as it was in October. I love the new specs, and, unfortunately for my wallet, I will be back again (note to self: DON'T look at new frames on your way out of the shop next time).

Also, it was mid afternoon on a weekday so probably not the busiest time for them. The optometrist (who is quite good looking I should add lol) listened to all my concerns. I would rate Second Specs 3.5 stars. There are great advantages to get glasses here; reasonable price, direct billing to insurance companies, and quick service. But I found the quality of my product wasn't as good as other opticals I have purchased glasses at. I stumbled upon it as I was walking in the mall and was looking for new glasses. They are a local company with 2 locations in West Edmonton Mall and recently opened up shop in Cross Iron Mills just outside of Calgary. The frames are around the kiosk and most available to try on unless you are looking at the brand name ones they carry. They carry Ray Ban, Nike, and others but the selection isn't as big as at other opticals. There is a colour variety and I found a number of purple frames to try on. Most of the frames I noticed were plastic. Once I picked out the frames I wanted, I had to wait for service. I have noticed that they can get busy and with typically 2 staff working, there could be a wait. I provided my prescription and they did they measurements and adjustments to the frames. I paid the $308 for my glasses which was a lot cheaper than other places where the price is at least double. Two days later I was in the mall and decided to ask if my glasses were in and was told they would be ready in about an hour or two. I went back to pick them up about an hour later and they were adjusted and on my way! When I got home, I noticed a few things about my glasses. There was some glue on the arm of the frame, and lenses, and some screws were dark and some light. That evening, one of the nose pads fell off! (Which has never happened with any of my glasses). I was able to find the screw after squinting looking for it on the bathroom floor and put it back in with my glasses repair kit. Since the first day, I had to tighten a screw to keep the arm in place once but hope the problem is fixed. Without these problems, this review would be 4. They likely didn't do a thorough check on my glasses to clean the glue off and ensure the screws were tight as they wanted to get them to me promptly. Two days for glasses, is a quick turnaround time. The opticians are friendly if you don't mind you may have to wait for service. Price is great for those who don't have coverage, need glasses for children, or want a few pairs. I also wear contacts so it worked out to get glasses from here.

They carry a huge lineup of sunglasses for fashion to active wear. I personally have one for when I'm biking, due to it's tighter arms, and another one for 'everyday' wear with a more relaxed fit. Although I do not need it myself, I appreciate how there is an 'Asian fit' style option due to the shorter noses of most Asians. There are a few locations around Edmonton that sell Oakley sunglasses, however none have as much selection as they offer at the Oakley store. They have a lot of different frame and lens combinations, and they allow you to customize your own in your order- before you'd be at the mercy of what the other retailers would have in stock. One thing I found annoying was how difficult it was to identify store staff. They dress 'normally' like the rest of us civilians, and a few times I found myself just talking to another customer. Regardless, when you are lucky to catch a staffer, you find they are a wealth of knowledge. They can recommend you the different types of frames you would need based on what activity you would be doing, and they also offer opinions on lenses to choose from. I even had a chance to their $4500 Elite C SIX Carbon Fiber sunglasses- it felt like nothing at all...but 'nothing at all' is exactly what would be left in my bank account if I bought them. Regardless, the staff had no hesitation showing this to me and were happy to entertain me.

The jackets were also on sale from $145 to about $85; that's pretty good. They carry items for both men and women and their men's section was pretty cool also. I used to always bring a friend when I bought glasses, but the last two times, as my confidence has increased, I've come on my own. I like this place, because even though you're on Whyte, there's always a parking spot. You never wait very long to be served, and the person you get is always very knowledgeable. If you need your eyes checked they often do it on the spot. Their site says to make an appt., but I never have. The only downside, is these guys are quite pricey, compared to some places- but they are on par with some other pricey stores. When you have insurance, they navigate you through that process and make it almost effortless. These are the folks I come to when I have a pair of frames that I want prescriptions in. I have friends that have found some fabulous treasures here in the clothing liquidations but I haven't found that hidden Easter Egg yet. The layout is kinda like a thrift store but way less organized. You need time when you come here to sort and sift through the garbage to find the gems. Also, sign up for their email online for advance notice of sales and coupons. It's a fun little liquidation warehouse but it could be improved significantly with better organization and layout.
