My gag reflex is so bad, I start heaving once the dentist walks into the room. Shamefully, I once punched a dental hygienist in the leg while she was cleaning my teeth and accidentally let the motorized brush hit the top of my lip. I felt so bad that I sent her flowers the next day (oddly enough, she did not consent to taking her out to dinner). To quote the great philosopher Jerome P Seinfeld, 'I am an anti-dentite.' No matter how excruciating that dental visit is (yes, I do take anti-anxiety pills before going for my twice yearly checkup)... Dr Michael Spencer has made my experience slightly less awful. For that he deserves an award because I'm pretty sure most dentists around town charge my insurance company double for (as my attorney friends call it), pain and suffering caused from my mere presence. The girls in Dr Spencer's office, in addition to being smoking hot, are kinder than Mother Theresa when I walk in the door. They also hande my extreme dentalphobia with the upmost of professionalism and always crack jokes to make me (somewhat) at ease. When Dr Spencer walks into the room (I think he now knows to sneak in so I don't dry heave my way out the door) he will tell me what's about to happen and very patiently waits and pauses whenever I'm having a tough time in the chair (yes, panic attacks have occurred, see: punching hygienist). While no dentist experience will ever be great (that's like you volunteering to sleep in a tank of black widows), Riverside Dental has proven to be the most tolerable I have found... And I have left quite the trail of quivering hygienists in my path.

Communication was poor, appointments were not handled efficiently, and I felt my concerns were dismissed rather than addressed. The staff appeared disorganized to my case, and the overall experience left me feeling frustrated and undervalued as a patient. What was most concerning was the lack of transparency regarding treatment recommendations and costs. I did not feel that adequate explanations were provided, making it difficult to make informed decisions about my dental care. I originally came in for a routine cleaning about a year and a half ago with no pain, sensitivity, or concerns regarding my teeth. During the visit, I was told I had a couple of cavities that were not a major concern, but I agreed to have them treated anyway. Since that treatment, I have experienced constant pain and sensitivity that I never had before. I can no longer comfortably bite into foods as simple as chicken without pain, and drinking anything cold causes significant discomfort. What should have been a straightforward procedure has turned into a year-and-a-half-long ordeal. Over this period, I returned multiple times to report the same symptoms. Rather than seriously addressing my concerns, I was repeatedly told that the work had been performed professionally and that the discomfort would eventually go away. Days turned into weeks, weeks into months, and now more than a year later, the pain remains and has only gotten worse. The treatment was redone five separate times, yet the issue was never resolved. Despite acknowledging the ongoing problem by repeatedly redoing the work, the conversation than became that there was no need to continue and that "these things happen with age." This explanation is difficult to accept considering the pain began immediately after treatment and was never present beforehand. What has been most frustrating is feeling dismissed throughout the entire process. During my most recent visit, after more than a year of consistently reporting the same symptoms, I felt as though my concerns were not taken seriously. At one point, I was even left with the impression that the dentist questioned whether the pain I was experiencing was real. No patient seeking help for a persistent issue should be made to feel that way. I have placed a tremendous amount of trust in this healthcare provider. I trusted this office to improve my dental health, and instead I have been dealing with pain, sensitivity, repeated appointments, and unanswered concerns for over a year. I want to make it clear that this review is not directed at the dental assistants or "most" of the front desk and scheduling staff. In my experience, the majority of them were kind, professional, and genuinely seemed to care about helping patients. My concerns are specifically directed toward the individuals responsible for handling my ongoing care. Is what made this such a frustrating and uncomfortable experience.
