I'm surprised I haven't gotten around to writing a review because every chance I get I recommend Il Sogno to friends. It never disappoints and almost everything is delicious. Rosie is an absolute dream as a server, part owner and creatively concocts a lot of the recipes and daily specials for her mom in the back who is hand cooking everything like she was back in Italy. The pasta dishes with Italian sausage are some of my favorites and my husband splurges on some of the seafood dishes which are always worth it. Honestly, with a number of dishes priced less than Macaroni Grill or Olive Garden, why go anywhere else!!! It is some of the best Italian I've ever had competing with some of Chcago's best in Little Italy. You will love it! read more

Though the food was very good and the roof top was a pleasurable venue, we were so rushed by the staff that the experience was not enjoyable at all. It was obvious that their goal was to turn the roof top tables as fast as possible. The inside was not very busy, so their revenue was coming from the limited number of tables on the roof. From a business perspective this was short sighted, as customers when treated like this, including us, will not return. Repeat business is the cornerstone of a successful restaurant, which the management here obviously does not know. Too bad! read more

I LOVE this place! Sometimes the service can be slow, but the food is so yum! The wait staff is nice and attentive even when they are busy. I would say when you are going to dinner here prepare yourself for a dinning experience, not a sit down, get the food and get out. This place was a great girls night out date. Food was very good. We had the grilled calamari appetizer, which had a nice light char and a great texture, and I had the chicken saltimbocca which was fantastic. Huge serving sizes, which is good because the prices are high. They had a great deal of half off house wine (on a Friday night!) Service was great - attentive and relaxed. We had a long dinner and were the last ones to leave on slow night (due, probably, to a snowstorm) and they never rushed us. Only weird thing was there was hardly any one there at 9 p.m. on a Friday night...granted it was supposed to be a huge snowstorm that night. read more

We were in the area on business and since we weren't familiar with the area we had asked the local bar tender at our hotel to what she would recommend for restaurants. She said that she knew the owner of a good Italian restaurant in Wheaton just a few miles up the road. So we decided to go. We went there with one other business associate, a total of three people, where none of us had eaten before. Sylvia was our waitress and from what we understand to be one of the co-owners of the place. She brought us out the menus, wine list, etc. They were prompt with the usual bread and water, and after about 5-10 minutes of looking over the menu she came back and asked us if we were ready to order yet. We could not really decide as all of the menu items looked good. She asked us if we'd rather just have her make the meal for us. She asked us if there were certain things that we disliked, then we asked her to give us a few minutes so we could discuss our options. She obliged and came back 5 minutes later and we decided to just let her make the meal for us. We gave her the menu back. She provided us with a very elegant 5+ course meal, and I can't remember all of them, but included salad, stuffed lamb, calamari, seafood pasta which included the oysters, mussels, etc, an Italian sausage plate, and to top it off a very good bread pudding with ice cream desert. The portions were almost perfect. Each course had just enough food for the three of us. The service was very good. Sylvia was very attentive to our needs when we needed something. She came back to check on us often enough to not pose an interruption to the meal or conversation. She would drop off each course and give us plenty of time to start eating before coming back and asking how it was. We went back later during our trip and Sylvia once again served us. She remembered who we were and acknowledged our previous visit. She is quite personable and entertaining. All of the food is made from scratch AND cooked to order. After eating here at Il Sogno Ristorante I have really no desire to eat at another Olive Garden again. There is no comparison to the atmosphere, the service, but most importantly the food. read more

I would say that the food is 4 stars, but....6:30 reservation on a Saturday night - just the two of us trying to catch up on each other's lives... Started out fine - waitress a little slow to get back to us after we sat down and said we needed a moment to look at the wine list, but that was not a problem.. We ordered our wine - visited and ordered our dinner.... dinner arrived and so did the BAND.... Good Grief - not that the group wasn't good, but....a four piece band w/vocal in a small dining area. We couldn't hear ourselves over the "music".... so a $70.00 meal and evening out was virtually ruined by too loud music. Too Bad. so - altho the food was nice - the dining room lovely - the evening was not what we had hoped. read more

I've been here half a dozen times over the last couple months while in town for work. I now make trips out just to go to Il Sogno. Everything on the menu I've had has been superb, and the wine recommendations have been spot on. Not to mention Joe at the bar makes a damn good Manhattan. Typical suburban Italian, in spite of the promise of something better. Bruschetta with a comical amount of ricotta, overcooked pasta (although, my shortrib dish was flavorful), questionable seafood, and tiramisu that cannot have been homemade. All in the most awkwardly laid-out room we've ever been in. Service was a bright spot - friendly, patient, handling of wine - until other servers began cleaning and setting chairs atop tables while several groups were still finishing meals. Nothing says Western Suburbs quite like "Seriously: we close at ten." We're told the rooftop patio is nice, but I don't expect we'll return to find out. read more

Good wine, bad service. It took my husband 15 minutes to get the glass of wine he ordered. We did have a good appetizer (grilled calamari) and the caprese salad was decent. Pasta was mediocre, and my husband's meal came out cold. No one ever checked on us, so we ate our dinner and then looked around the restaurant for our waiter. I had delayed going here because I was under the impression that it was high priced. It was a little pricey but not outrageous. 4 out of 5 dinners were very good. The Chicken Parmesan was dry and overcooked. Not a good choice. Lobster gnocchi appetizer was delicious and the Osso Bucco was tender and tasty. We love Il Sogno! We were in town celebrating my son's college graduation. The place was packed on Saturday night. They quickly pulled together some tables in the bar area and we had an absolutely fantastic evening. Even tho it was packed out, the server and waiter were attentive to every need - without being intrusive. We got to enjoy a fabulous live band. We love the stairs leading to the upstairs restaurant and the brick walls in the old brick building. And the food? It was amazing - starting with the warm bread. The puttanesca was divine. My daughter ordered off-menu fettuccine alfredo - the best she's ever had! It was all such a wonderful experience, we went back again on Monday evening to do it all over again (this time a more quiet intimate evening - but just as lovely). Great food, service and atmosphere for small groups, couples or families. Just a great place! Highly recommend. read more

The first time my husband and I went, we sat on their rooftop and the food and service were good! However, the second time we went, we were with another couple and their young daughter in the main dining room, and the service was pretty disappointing. We asked for a booster when we first arrived, and it never came. Our waitress was friendly, but often not around. After waiting about 30 minutes to get to order, our food then took about an hour to arrive, which was frustrating when you consider that we had a 3 y/o with us. The food is decent, and the rooftop is worth a visit for a drink, but we won't be heading back for dinner any time soon. read more

First, my meal was delicious. I had the lobster cappellacci. My husband had the caccio peppe which was just eh. He said it tasted like mediocre Alfredo sauce with a ton of pepper. He did have the gluten free noodles, so I'm sure it affected the dish somewhat. A lot of the entrees seem expensive ($54 for an 8 oz filet) but I thought the cost of our entrees was reasonable, I had a lot of lobster in mine. Now the things we didn't like: we made reservations for the rooftop, which they said they'd do everything to try to accommodate. We ended up getting seated outside, not even under the tent but further down on the street. Our chairs were really uncomfortable folding chairs but most of the tables had regular chairs, so I asked to swap out or seats which they were very nice about and did for us. Last, they give bread with grated Parmesan but no butter or oil. If you want oil you have to order it off the appetizers for $6 which I thought was really strange and stingy of them. Overall loved my entree but not sure if we'll be back for a while since there are so many other places nearby to try too! read more

The food cannot overcome the attitude. We have given this place several chances but each time the people working their have been extremely rude with bad attitudes. It also doesn't seem to matter if you have a reservation because there is always a wait for a table. In fairness the food is good but it is not worth dealing with the servers and owners. My husband and I decided to take a random drive for dinner and stumbled upon this restaurant. Wow! We couldn't of been happier. It's a loft turned into a restaurant with beautiful windows, exposed brick and tin ceiling tiles. The staff was super nice. Our waiter was great - just the right amount of checking in. He wasn't overbearing nor was he the fantom waiter. We both ordered the gnocchi and it was delish. Perfectly done! As we were leaving my husband asked the name of the specialty beer he had since they only sell it once a year. He gave us the name, but wasn't sure on all the details so he asked the bartender to talk to us. She was more than happy to take the time and tell us more about it so we could possibly see if we could find it. It ended up being a great night. We will definitely go back!! read more

Went there for m anniversary and they were very helpful with wine selections as well as giving us a surprise dessert when they overheard us talking. I should start by saying, we have not been to Il Sogno in over a year and have had pleasant experiences prior to last night. The service last night was sub par when the restaurant was not overly busy. I would have easily forgiven the service IF the food was good. The food was terrible and I almost felt ripped off for the cost of the bill. We started with the fried calamari. It looked as though we got the bottom of the bag of the frozen calamari that was just tossed on a plate. It was also super chewy. The pasta I ordered (vodka) was okay. When the busboy dropped it off, no one asked if I wanted parmesan cheese. We had to WAIT for our waitress to notice us waving our hands to ask for the cheese and refills for our two empty wine glasses. She brought over some Kraft-like parmesan cheese. I was expecting a fresh grate as I had experienced in the past. My husband ordered the veal saltimbocca. It definitely looked and tasted like frozen veal patties with a limp and scant piece of prosciutto on top. Usually in saltimbocca, the prosciutto is wrapped around and crispy. Needless to say, I was very disappointed, especially with it being Mother's Day. Because of the service and the terrible food, we will not be returning to this restaurant. It appears they have had to cut costs and are no longer offering a delicious meal at a reasonable price. read more

This is another restaurant that could and should be great but they simply lose focus and don't seem to care about the customer. I give them 2 stars because the food was very good from the calamari and caprese appetizers to the soups and salads followed by wonderful entrees highlighted by the red snapper. Desserts were so so, cannoli was very average and I have never had tiramisu served hot. My real problem was the service or lack thereof which started with the reservation process. I called on Thur for a Sat evening seating and had to leave a message which said someone will contact me shortly to confirm. More than 24 hours later, no call so I call them and they tell me I am in the book and they don't know why I wasn't called. We arrive promptly at 7 and are seated right away and are pleasantly surprised the tables aren't packed together like most Italian restaurants. We brought our own wine which our server offered to decant, little did we know it would take him 15 minutes to find a decanter. Once the wine was decanted he simply walked away without pouring any, offering a taste or asking if we wanted anything other than wine to drink. Not a huge deal, I can pour my own wine. He resurfaces 15 minutes later to see if we want any appetizers. Great we get the aforementioned calamari and caprese. We finished those and the empty plates sat on the table for 15 minutes or so. In the meantime we finished our bottle of wine and were looking for our server to open our next bottle. He finally comes back and begins to recite the specials and mentions there are appetizer specials but we don't need to hear them because we already had appetizers. Had we known there were specials we may have ordered them. I could go on and on but we constantly had to flag him down for everything and the wait for everything except refills on water were ridiculous. We weren't in a hurry but 3+ hours for a simple Italian meal is ridiculous. We must have waited 20 minutes between the time we asked for the check and it arrived at our table, delivered by someone other than our server. I can't tell if our server was new, incompetent or overworked. There was also no management presence asking if you enjoyed your meal or thanking you for coming. I am undecided whether I will go back, the food was very good but not so good I can overlook service that doesn't care if I return or not. read more

We attended a birthday party (8 adults) here on 5/10/14 and were (almost) completely disappointed.It all started fine with a drink at the bar, where the bartender was cheerful. We then got seated at a nice table by the windows, which were open to the street. Our server was clearly not int he mood to be serving that night. She was brusque, inattentive and never there when you wanted anything. I had what was probably the best meal of all 8, Linguini with mussels - it was OK, not great. My wife ordered Veal Piccata and it was the most bland sauce on the thinnest two strips of veal I have ever tasted. My son ordered some sort of Chicken Cannoli that were bordering on awful (pasta shells stuffed with what appeared to be ground chicken, yuck). The place is noisy and there was a large family next to us with wildly unruly children (not the restaurant's fault, of course). Drinks are grossly overpriced ($14 for a Scotch on the Rocks? Really?). And to top it all off the waitress overcharged us on 4 separate checks, one of them to the tune of $40 over. She tried to turn what should have been a $275 table into nearly a $400 table. We complained and the hostess/manager tried to fix everything, but I will never go back. It is overpriced the service was poor and the food is worse than average, at least on this night. I don't give many one star reviews, but this one is richly deserved in my book. read more

The restaurant has just reopened after being closed for about a month. They are off their game at the moment but will, hopefully, be back to their former level soon. We were disappointed in the menu as well as the service this last Saturday. Three of our four guests were served while the fourth waited 10 minutes for her entree. Not acceptable. Great Italian fare and service has been spot-on every time we've dined. The Misto Grill appetizer is an absolute must try - fresh squid, octopus, and shrimp, seared on a grill to get a quick char, lightly seasoned and hit with just the right dash of balsamic and lemon juice. mmm, i can taste it now. My wife and I have ordered from the menu and from the specials of the day and I have to say, I think I will always order one of the specials from now on - not anything against the menu but rather the specials tend to be truly special and you can tell the chef enjoys preparing them for the guests each night. The location of Il Sogno is unusual in that it is on the 2nd floor of an older building, however there is elevator service for those less inclined or able to take the stairs. Try it, you wont be disappointed. read more

Disappointed to only give Sogno 3 stars. It's a very nice space. Been here twice. First time the server couldn't make a wine recommendation or answer a basic wine question, then my table of three's food came out at different times so I was sitting there watching my meal get cold. Second time (last night) the host was so rude that I don't think any of us will go back. She scolded my friends for not responding when their name was called, but they were literally 6 steps away from her - directly in her line of sight. She was very snippy - we arrived at different times and each greeted the group with "what's up with the host?" Then she was rude to us as a group (is it possible to *enjoy* not seating people..?), so we decided to take our business elsewhere. No complaints about the bartender, who was nice and fast and patient and should get a raise because of how overworked he was. read more

While we heard they have a fantastic rooftop deck, we chose to sit inside and enjoy the great windows in the dining room overlooking the charming downtown. Our dinner was at 5:30 on a Wednesday, so not yet busy. The night we dined, the evening was a perfect early autumn night so the AC was off, but the day had been warm and the windows (only every other one) were open only about 8 inches, so no breeze and a bit hot and sunny in the setting sun. Later in our meal, when the sun was gone, we opened the two windows nearest us and it was instantly a great experience; we wished the staff had opened them all, there is so much value in that view and the ambience they lend to the room. The martini was good, served very cold in a large martini glass and well-priced at $9.00 with $1.00 up-charge for premium liquor. All good. Bread, olive oil and Parmesan started our meal. Our salads were very well made and served in square bowls, a nice touch. The amount of dressing was just right. My Caesar salad was flavorful, a tad on the sweet side, not over garlicky. Husband had the house salad, balsamic on mixed greens with red onion. Again, hit the mark. The main course for me was gluten free chicken piccata with wilted spinach. Wish I'd taken a picture, it was bad on sight, and if we eat with our eyes first, well... I was disappointed. The chicken looked like gray cubed steak (I thought maybe it was veal, but no, the server assured me it was chicken), it had been excessively pounded into two textured thin rumpled sheets, not sure why. If one is pounding to thin and tenderize, this should not be the result. It lay, gray and lifeless in a thin butter (not buttery) broth that added no flavor to the dish. On top of the chicken were capers and bits of garlic. I ate two bites, the second one only to confirm the tastelessness of the first. The chicken was rubbery and bland. Only flavor being the capers. Yuck. The server tried hard to be gracious while explaining to me that a piccata is just a simple dish in a lemon and butter sauce. I've eaten it before and have always liked it, but none ever tasted like this. He did bring the menu and eventually a new dish- sausage and red peppers, very good, and again, a tad on the sweet side, which stood up well to the spice and robust sausage. This dish was a good portion size for me, and may have been an appetizer portion. It did the trick and saved our meal. The server was helpful, but seemed not immediately understanding of the issue. He later came back to the table and told me that he had tried some of the uneaten part of the dish and he agreed with my evaluation. Hmmm, okay. My husband had ordered veal Marsala, he felt his veal was okay, and the sauce smelled great and looked amazing and was dark and rich-flavored with plump and plentiful mushrooms. We then enjoyed the night air, the street scene below, and cappuccino and espresso. There is lovely sweet shoppe below (a separate business) so we enjoyed a bit of dessert there on the way to the car. Street Parking is usually a block or so away, but there is a parking garage around the corner. Overall, a pleasant evening. Would try it again, but I'll skip the attempt to accommodate a gluten free piccata. read more

Seriously the best Italian food around, and quite possibly that I've ever had, even having been to Italy many times. All dishes are authentic and cooked fresh daily! The service is excellent as well--all the staff are friendly and extremely knowledgeable about the food and their excellent selection of wines. Great place to host parties also. We keep trying this place and mostly like it if you can get past the chaos! We try to go there once a every other month to sit at the bar and have light meals. Since Sheila left, the bartending staff has no idea what they are doing! The new rooftop dining looked so nice, went there last night and put our name in....again total chaos with taking our name. We were told 30-45 minutes wait. Waited at the bar. Watched as several couples came in after us, put their names in, and got seated before us. Finally after an hour and ten minutes got up and left and as we were leaving, the host who took our name, did not even remember we were waiting for seating. The restaurant was open for lunch on a Wednesday. Awesome! We really enjoyed our visit because of great service and food. Their meatball panini is the best one in the area with crunchy bread, a plentiful amount of meat, and delicious marinara. If you love desserts, try the Nutella ciabatta bread. Never go in a group of all teenagers! I've been twice with my friends and they honestly were terrible to us (this was second time it happened) because they assumed we wouldn't tip well...we asked for more bread and they never gave it to us, wouldn't let us go on the roof, barely checked on us...and it sucks because food was really good but overall bad experience! read more

What a beautiful gem! The restaurant is uniquely located in an upstairs portion of the building that it shares with an ice cream shop. The windows overlook downtown Wheaton and the metra tracks which adds to an already romantic atmosphere. Our waiter was attentive and knowledgeable about the menu. For wine, we ordered the masciarelli montepulaciano de abruzzo Italian red wine and it was delicious, far better than any of the wine we had just had tasting devine. The olive oil and bread were already on the table, which is an absolute must! I ordered the rotolo pomodoro and my friend had the gnocchi pomodoro. When you order an entrée, you get either soup or salad. I chose their side salad which our server recommended and it was amazing! Probably one of the best side salads that I have ever had, the balsamic dressing was spot on and not too soggy. My friend enjoyed her broccoli and cheddar soup. I thought that my entrée was unique and savory but my friend said that the gnocchi was just alright. After we paid, it was a few minutes before closing, and we asked our waiter when we should leave and he said to take our time and that everyone was still there working. Only about 15 minutes later, the manager came and asked us to leave because they were closing, which was fine but the waiter should have just said that we close at 10 instead of saying to take our time because we then felt embarrassed and rushed. However, it is without a doubt that I will return. I have already been raving to other friends about how great of a restaurant it is! read more

Had my sons wedding rehearsal dinner here and when I started, I was a bit worried. The space was not great, it was basically a screened area away from the main restaurant floor. Not my first choice, but in the end it worked out fine. Food and drink however most importantly was really good. Hard to do a group dinner with a set menu well, but they did. Lots of compliments on the food and drink, and overall it was a very nice night. read more
