My birth plan did not go as planned (as they always say happens). Heather was there to help us through these obstacles every step of the way. She doesn't push you to make any decisions, she educates you and informs you and prepares you to make the decisions that fit you best. I had complications post delivery and she comforted my husband and made the phone calls and held my baby during this emotional time while I was in the OR. She was so much more help than we could have even dreamed of. She is the full package. She even took our newborn photos when my daughter was two weeks old and we turned it into our Christmas card. We also took Heather's classes to prep us for L&D. She made us feel comfortable about everything. She even braided my hair when I was in labor, so sweet! We made her work over time! Poor Heather. She was with us for hours and hours for two days straight. She was very responsive and willing to do whatever we asked her to do. She was even helping coordinate keeping my placenta and the logistics of that. I even texted her the other day to ask about recommendations for my baby and she answered right away. It is easy in today's birth world to feel like childbirth is being done to you rather than feeling like an active participant, but at Hillside midwifery everything is explained to you clearly and openly and you decide what's best for you every step of the way. I just delivered my 4th baby with Hillside and had the most wonderful experience. When giving advice to first time moms picking a midwife I always say pick someone you feel like you'd be friends with because you're going to spend so much time together. Well Katie became more than a friend she became like family. That 6 week appointment after you give birth will be the hardest because you have to say goodbye to someone that you've grown to adore. Clarissa was there to comfort me through my fears as well as educate me on breastfeeding, labor positions, and how to write a birth plan. She was willing to go to appointments with me if I was scared and my husband couldn't. I decided to have a natural birth in a birthing center and she was my ROCK! I had a labor of 13 hours pushed for 3 and she didn't leave my side. For some reason the sound of my husbands voice was like nails on a chalk board. I needed the voice of a woman and the comfort of a woman. She was the best coach and support. It was the hardest work I ever did and it made a huge difference to have cheerleader on my side with my best interest at heart. They gave me so many tips and idea on how to avoid stalling out again. There were 2 at home prenatal visits, on-call support leading up to the birth, support during the birth, and a perinatal appointment after the birth. I ended up having an amazing home birth experience and Amanda provided so much support for me during the pushing stage. Having her there to hold my hands, guide me through breathing, and hold my hand afterwards for stitching was just what I needed. I would highly recommend Elevated Birth if you're interested in a doula for your birth. I've read that women who birth with a doula statistically transfer to hospitals less and also require less epidurals.
