This was my husband's first trip to NYC, so OF COURSE he needed to have a proper New York pie. And…read moreI love a thin, crispy crust, so John's definitely did not disappoint. They sat us upstairs along the balcony overlooking the main dining room, and the decor... honestly, just look at the photo because I don't even know how to describe it The space used to be a church, and it is SO cool inside. Definitely not your average pizza joint. This place is popular -- there were plenty of people eating -- but surprisingly, our wait wasn't long at all. And even with all the bodies in there, it never felt crammed or uncomfortable. We ordered a small pizza and did half Shrimp Fra Diavolo and half Margherita. The Fra Diavolo had a little kick, but nothing crazy -- and this is coming from someone who cannot handle big spice The Margherita had just the right amount of basil and mozzarella, and that crispy crust was exactly what I wanted. Although there was no major cheese pull, it was still perfect. The small was plenty for the two of us and honestly just perfect. We also had a couple cocktails, which were delicious too. I always say NYC food pricing is kind of deceiving. You look at the price and go, "Ummm..." but then the food comes out and you realize they give you A LOT. Definitely felt like we got our money's worth here. Great pizza, really cool atmosphere, and a fun first NYC pizza experience for the husband. Happy Eating, Chass

I had a great experience at John's. Bustling doesn't seem to fit, it was packed to the gills. John's is extremely spacious, and even with that much space, we had a substantial wait. The wait was worth it though because they know how to do pizza. The crust just crisp enough, the sauce flavorful, and the toppings plentiful. The service was friendly and quick given the number of people there. For my first trip to NYC, I'd make this a traditional stop for future visits.

We had dinner reservations nearby and wanted to grab a drink beforehand. We were with a local who…read moreknew about Bar Centrale -- otherwise we never would have found it. There are no signs, and you walk up a set of steps and through a thick curtain to get inside. It's tucked into an old brownstone and very easy to miss. We went right around 7pm, and it was completely empty. That actually makes sense since Broadway shows start around then, so it's a great time to hit a bar or restaurant in the area. We sat at the bar. Service was a bit mixed. The bartender we had wasn't very friendly, but we did get our drinks without issue. We ordered a couple of Mexican mules and a martini. The martini was fabulous -- definitely the standout. Unfortunately, the mules were not great. I was also hoping for some specialty or holiday cocktails, but there weren't any. That said, the space itself is beautiful and has a cool, hidden-gem feel. The other staff we interacted with were very nice -- we just happened to get the grumpy bartender. Would I go back? Probably not, but only because there are so many other places in NYC I'd want to try. Still, it's a cool spot (if you can find it).

I stopped in Bar Centrale right on the dot at 5PM. I did not have a reservation and wanted to snag…read morea bar seat. The bar is not ADA accessible as it requires walking up a flight of stairs. The bar is not marked by a sign either. What may have been a hidden secret in the past is not so much a secret these days. They take reservations over phone up to one week in advance. There's a number of tables and booth seating, and a few bar seats available for a walk in. The menu of food is pretty decent though lacking in many vegetarian or vegan options. I opted for a grilled cheese sans the bacon and it was good. The grilled cheese has goat cheese in it which may not be for every one. I had an aviation drink and a glass of riesling. The cocktail was pretty standard. The wine was good. Service was generally good and attentive at the bar. The host in the front was kind. It seems like they have a coat check which I did not use. There is one bathroom in the back. The bar is definitely more crowded pre and post theater. It was packed 5pm-7pm but around 7pm, it became noticeably quiet and the bar emptied out. I'd suggest coming here while a show is playing to avoid a crowd. However, even with a packed house, the bar was not loud. Of course, if you prefer a pre or post theater cocktail, I'd recommend a reservation to guarantee entry. While this bar won't be known for its drinks or food, I think much of the allure stems from the location and the reputation for attracting famous clientele. It's a pretty chill place in the midst of crazy Times Square, so I'd definitely come back. While it may attract some tourists (if they find out about it), it generally seemed to cater to the wider New York crowd (I.e Manhattanites but also Westchester folk, Long Islanders, New Jerseyans driving in, etc)

It was really beautifully done and completely over the top. We didn't get them ourselves but the festive drinks were really cute! Pricey but I definitely understand the fun. Food 3/5. Arancini was a 4/5, could have used more sauce and were pretty small. French onion soup 3/5, stale bread chunk and overall a very savory flavored soup, not the best I've had. Arrived not hot. Burger was a 4/5. Service 3/5. They were understaffed but overall the service was pretty slow and multiple items were left off our order and we had to ask twice for items like ketchup. Overall would return for the Christmas decor but wouldn't come starving & would have ordered less food.

I was immediately blown away by their gorgeous "Frosty" Christmas display including various baubles hanging from the high ceilings, flashing lights and incredible candy cane staircase. We arrived around 4:00 between brunch and dinner, so it was fairly quiet until 5:00 when lots of families arrived. (I think there's a DJ later on as well). My dinner (nicely charred cheeseburger, crispy fries and "Buddy the Elf" cocktail) was yum; especially loved their signature 16 layer cake done up in red and green. Highly recommend this place for kids of all ages!
