Left Edge Theatre - Bad Jews, 2016

This year I've seen a musical where the songs actually supported the plot and all actors were outstanding. Another play had moments of humor and deep sadness as the two leads navigated the difference between their dreams and their reality. And, last night, I attended a play based on air guitar competition -- which surprised me with the depth each character developed in between outrageous air guitar performances. Try it out! The new season begins in September -- and The California Theater on 7th Street offers a variety of comedy, musical and dance band options throughout the week when the plays are dark. It's amazing!

I have this secret rule of thumb: the quality of entertainment and food is inversely proportional to the distance one is from San Francisco. Left Edge is an exception. Sofie and I saw the production of "Bad Jews". The Left Edge mission statement: "We endeavor to thrill, challenge, and engage audiences with ideas that make us think more, laugh more, and feel more." - "Bad Jews" delivered on the mission statement. It was funny and provoking. The actors were carefully selected for their ability to portray New York Jews - so the main characters were from New York. I was impressed with the quality of acting. I was totally absorbed in the characters. From Santa Rosa, San Francisco productions include a long drive, difficulty of parking, hassle to fight for a place to eat and the long drive back. Left Edge has SF beat on all of these issues as it's located within the Luther Burbank Center (Formerly Wells Fargo Center) where parking is free and easy, no long drives and plenty of places to dine. If one enjoys live stage drama, Left Edge should be experienced. Tickets are about $25, seating is at one's choice and since the theatre is small, there are no bad seats. Then, life got in the way of my passion, and I put my needs and love of singing aside to take care of life's business. In December of 2013, I reached a very high stress point in both my personal and professional life (lots of stuff going on that was totally out of my control), and I desperately needed to do something just for me. I needed stress relief, fun, an escape and to do something that brought me joy. I really wanted to get back into singing, but wasn't sure how. I knew I didn't want to join a church choir because I am not religious, and I didn't want to take a formal singing class again at a college, because I just didn't need the stress. I just wanted to sing and have fun. I searched online for fun-sounding chorus's, and found this one. I was really nervous about going because it had been so long since I had sung anything, and of course, I didn't know anyone there. However, I was determined, and I hesitantly went to a few rehearsals, and tried to blend in and not call attention to myself. I was really impressed by the positive energy, the non-judgmental feel, and the overall welcome feeling I got. The singing was secondary at that point because I didn't know any of the songs, and I was still really nervous. I was encouraged to do a formal rehearsal, so I finally did it at week 4, and I was accepted immediately the same night in Jan of 2014. Ever since then, I have been growing, evolving, coming out of my shell, getting over my stage fright, making new friends, learning the songs, and having an absolute blast. I didn't know anything about Barbershop singing until I joined. Let me tell you, if you're going to sing, Barbershop is the way to do it! I have found my love of singing again. I have found me again. I have re-awakened my inner passion for music and harmony and ringing overtones. I go to rehearsals, and belt out the songs with all the energy and love I have. I have fun. I sing. I laugh. I destress. I don't look at my phone for 3 whole hours! Like I said, joining this chorus has seriously changed my life. I was sending out an SOS, and I got help. Thank you Song Of Sonoma. Forever Yours, Katherine

I tried a few places in town (sort of like goldilocks, something just wasn't right for me with each of them), before a friend recommended her favorite place, Tone - Pilates, Dance, Yoga. Thank goodness! I just love it! Not only does my membership provide me with the yoga classes and yoga studio I was looking for, but they have the largest schedule of fitness class offered over all the other clubs in town I looked at. So besides yoga, I have also done Pilates mat classes, Cardio Toning, Zumba, Barre toning classes and they even have adult ballet, which looks fun. The owners Alyson and Monica are so sweet (as are all the staff). They all are warm, inviting and inclusive. Tone feels like a community, a community of new friends. Which is also so important. I now recommend it to everyone new that I meet and have had several friends and co-workers join. They offer a free pass on their website, which is also really nice for first time visitors and guests. It is a special place and a warm and welcoming yoga studio, fitness studio, Pilates studio, dance studio and community for everyone and I can't recommend it enough.
