These people are fabulous. This is NOT your normal governmental agency experience. My Social Security quest began by calling the national 800 number. It was an eternal hold. But if you put them on speaker phone it's not nearly as bad. The woman who took my call was extremely friendly & helpful. She spent a lot of time researching my exact situation. Then she input all my information & set up an appointment for me to take my supporting documents to the local office. It was about 6 weeks wait. But it was well worth it. When I entered the parking lot, almost 30 minutes before my appointment time, I expected the worst. The parking lot was packed, as was the inside seating. I expected a DMV experience. You check in on a touch screen when you enter. If you have an appointment you so designate. I immediately noticed that a very few people were called by their name. The rest were numbers. At my exact appointment time my name was called. Mr. Johnson, who helped me, was amazing. He explained things that I had never known. He advised me regarding timing of future actions. He gave me paperwork documentation on everything & even wrote his extension number, should I have any questions. I left with the feeling that the Social Security Administration truly cared about me as a person. I am still aglow with that feeling tonight. read more

I arrived at 9:00 AM and was greeted by a line extending outside the building. After checking in at the kiosk, I waited more than two hours without being seen( still sitting in the lobby waiting as I type this). Since food and drinks are not permitted inside, the lengthy wait is even more challenging. I want to be clear that my frustration is not directed at the staff currently working. The employees appear to be doing the best they can under difficult circumstances. However, it is evident that this office is severely understaffed. Having only 2 service windows open out of 14 available windows is concerning and significantly impacts customer wait times and the overall experience. I encourage management to evaluate staffing levels and allocate additional resources to better serve the public. While this is a government office, it still provides an important service, and residents deserve timely, efficient, and respectful customer service. read more

I strongly suggest you make an appointment. Be sure to check in at the front kiosk and keep your numbered ticket on you. Do not give the ticket to anyone else, it is directly tied to you. There is no food, drink or photo taking allowed. Be prepared to wait several hours. Also, DO NOT sit at any of the seats along the walls, even if none of those windows are open to serve anyone. You cannot sit at the closed windows even if there aren't any available seats. read more

They also lost my social security card and when i told them i was upset about it they said it's not their fault they don't track it and told me to freeze my credit. I need to get them on the phone. I have tried for three days now. I get put on hold. After twenty to thirty minutes the phone seems to start ringing through. Then it stops. Nobody answers and the line goes silent and then drops your call. This is over receiving a 1099 indicating over $72,000 in SS earnings being repaid. Who gets that kind of money in three months. I cannot file taxes until this is corrected. This is crazy. read more

Ok... a little bizarre to review a government agency... but hey, that is what we do, right? OK, well... first off, unless you have an appointment, bring a book, and a good one! But with the current economy they do the best with what they have. I am not too trusting with mailing important documents so I feel most secure taking them into the office and they are very patient with getting them turned in efficiently and also have a drop box outside if you don't have the time to wait, just make sure everything is properly labeled. The staff have all been very polite, never fussy, and considering what they do... that is nothing short of amazing! So, give them a break on the time management, most of the people they serve are elderly and can be as slow as molasses up hill in the winter... ;-) read more

This is the third time I came to the social security office to check on the status of my social security card. We waited for three and half hours and the lady had this worst attitude. And wouldn't even bother to login her system to check. She said you applyed in other state so there's nothing I can do. But the last time I was in the office the other lady was able to check it. Got here at 8:55 they open at 9 and of course the line was wrapped around outside. It's 9:16 and I'm still waiting outside. Normally I wouldn't care because when you go to certain places like DMV or the doctors you're prepared to wait and this place is no different but it's a breezy 45 degrees and I am cold! The line is moving but it's slow which is expected. Ok I'm finally in lets see how long this takes. Well after waiting for about one hour I was called to the check in window and told I didn't have everything necessary to get my new card so I had to leave and come back. Now I'm back it's been about thirty minutes and I'm at the window checking in. Now I'm back at the window and filled out my paperwork and leaving. Surprisingly not as long as I thought it would take. Some advice for SSA y'all should have a Social Security Select like the DMV so if people only need to get a birth certificate or Social Security card they won't have to wait in long lines behind those who have more complex business to handle. This socialal security building is the worst. Worst than DMV. Average waiting time is 2.5 hours. There's approximately 13 windows and only 2-3 windows are open most of the time and there is this useless window for checking in. Why would you check in again with a representative where in you already checked in with a kiosk. read more
