How did I never know this Recycling Center existed?…read more My son has been helping me purge my house of old computers, printers, monitors, etc. They had been taking up way too much space. The weight, removal of the hard drives & bringing them downstairs had been a formidable obstacle. My son researched & found the city's recycling center which really impressed me. The location was quite convenient. From the north side of town take I-64 to the Indian River East exit then an immediate right on the road that runs in front of Regent University. Then take a right turn on Jake Sears Road. The Landfill & Recycling Center is on the right and very obvious. One immediately sees a very large version of Mount Trashmore with no landscaping. I suspect eventually it might become a similar park. At the gatehouse show your driver's license as proof of Virginia Beach residency. Entrance is free for individual but has a charge for businesses. Since we had household electronic recyclables we were instructed to go to the HHW area, which was a beehive of activity. The employees didn't offer to help since my son was there. I'm not sure if that would be the case if I went alone. They instead pointed out the various spots where the different types of electronics should be placed. It was a quite a quick instruction. So be prepared to listen closely. The organization is terrific. There are areas separated by dividers for the different products. I even saw an area closer to the open front building where the employees were located that had refrigerators. I believe that was the area where the computers were placed. Getting out of the vehicle and walking to the building I was able to learn quite a lot from my questions. The items placed on the street by residences for bulk pickup aren't taken to Recycling. They go in the dump with other trash. But 100% of what we brought on our trip will be recycled. So it's much better for the environment to bring those items to the Recycling area than to leave by the street for bulk pickup. As we circled out of the area I saw the bins where wood & other items the city considers construction debris (even though most is not) are placed. They are not allowed as a part of curbside pickup. I've struggled with what to do with these since my husband died since many won't fit in the trash bin. These bins weren't ground level. So it required hoisting the items over the top of bins similar to those behind shopping centers or businesses. This area was quite busy with what must have been commercial drop offs. Were I to struggle with getting something into the bin, I'm certain one of them would volunteer to help a Senior Citizen. Don't dare tell anyone I described myself in that fashion. :) I'm happy to know how to dispose of wood that falls apart so quickly in my backyard that faces the Chesapeake Bay a little less than a mile away. The corrosive atmosphere is a terrible destroyer of metal & wood. This was a very productive & informative visit to the Virginia Beach Recycling Center. I wish I had known the extent of it years ago. Recycle! Don't trash!

Drive up to the attendant, tell them what you are tossing, and they'll tell you where to go. As you drive to the group of trash receptacles, other attendants will guide you to your specific receptacle. The organization definitely was on point. Trouble is, at time of need, there was only 1 area DMV open #ThanksCovid. Booked a 540p Sat appointment online; received a "1 day" email reminder/confirmation. Though it's a trek from my house, the experience was worth the drive. I was in and out in under 15 minutes. In fact, my commute took longer than the appointment. Lots of parking available. On arrival (in my Phase 2 mask, semi-weird at a DMV) employee verifies admittance based on your name matching info on clipboard. Before approaching the main info desk, another employee sprays/wipes down surfaces between EVERY CUSTOMER. I provided all requested documents upon request. Rep approved and sent me to window 13. PRO TIP1: complete the online VA DMV Real ID pre-application BEFORE your appointment. SAVES TIME AND HEARTACHE: alerts you as to which documents you'll need along with the ability for the DMV rep to print the pre-filled application. I used valid US passport, expiring VA driver's license, social security card and mortgage statement. PRO TIP2: on the app, make sure to enter your name exactly how it appears. Some of my documents had my middle, some didn't. PRO TIP3: if you've had a name change (married or divorced) you'll need the marriage cert AND social security card with the NEW NAME. After confirming my organ donor status and never having a license in another state, I signed the pre-filled application, took a brief vision exam, then stood for a new photo (mask off). That flash IS BRIGHT! Paid $42 quickly via credit card and I was on my way. DMV accepts Apple Pay! FYI, you'll leave with a temp paper license until the RealID gets mailed from Richmond (7-10 days).

They kept thanking me for my patience but they were the patient ones, having to deal with whatever tricky system issues they ran into. Props to them all! Automated check in for online appointments is very easy--you get a text reminder of your appointment when you make it online, you reply to that number with "check in" 15 minutes before your appointment, it texts you back with a ticket number, then you sit and wait til your ticket number comes up. The waiting area got quite cold as they had an industrial a/c running, so wear layers in summer/extreme heat times. The only recommendation I have is that it would be great to have some instructions posted next to the machine that you put your face/eyes on to take your eye test, both for how to do the test/use the machine and to sanitize it after each use. If the person instructing you isn't speaking loudly, it's hard to hear what you're supposed to do.

It is surrounded by the CHKD building and the Fort Norfolk Plaza. There is limited parking there as it shares a lot with the Strelitz Diabetes Center. It is on the ground floor in the back to the left that the EVMS HOPES free clinic is located. You can also come here for STI checks and TB clinics. I'm not ecstatic about how the clinics are run here. The HOPES clinic is great. Of course it is, it's run by EVMS students! But the other clinics are less than optimal. Anyways, it is free for the most part so there really shouldn't be any complaining.

This is still referred to as PSD Afloat on the DEERS website at 1837 Morris street by Gate 2. Easy in and out and walk-ins are super fast if you time it right. Never had an issue and there is a large parking lot right beside the building Z-133. The office is hard left as soon as you walk in. You can make an appointment online which I highly recommend so you don't wait half the day.

This venue is obviously much nicer - climate controlled, cleaner with modern upgrades and facilities, and even a snack room (with vending machines only). I visited this facility 7 times in August/September for jury duty - even the jury waiting room is nice. It's roomier than the old courthouse's jury waiting room and the city employees I've encountered there are pleasant and helpful. If there's one complaint I have, it's the "no cellphones allowed" rule. I understand the reasons why, but maybe restricting them from just the courtrooms (this is coming from a juror's perspective, mind you) would hold better value. As a potential juror, waiting around with only HGTV on the tv is a drag. At the least, I can use my phone to read, listen to music (or podcasts), and even get some work done. I know I can bring my own reading material (which I did), but who wants to carry extra stuff to a venue when there's no immediate parking? The closest garage is MacArthur Center - the walk isn't bad at all. But I don't want to carry any more than is necessary. I ended up doing so only because I couldn't bring in my cell. There are lockers at the first floor lobby, but I never carry change. And security is inconsistent when it comes to the metal detector and what you can and cannot bring in (i.e., medication and types of water bottles). Oh well, I will chalk up my jury duty as a learning experience. I learned plenty about our justice system as well as the Norfolk General District Court. The facility is fantastic, but getting inside is an inconvenience. Luckily for me, it's not an everyday thing. JV

Nevertheless usually when I go it's either the Monday before the last day the day before the last day or on the last day to pay, this year it was December 5th. I must say the line moved swiftly. The staff is courteous and helpful also. Clean inside... I never had an issue parking, but pack your patience it can be a little struggle finding a parking space. But I'm in and out within 10 minutes or less. Have fun and enjoy life :)

The Virginia Beach Voter Registrar's office certainly knows how to handle Early Voting effectively…read more I was very impressed. This was the first major election that I've voted at the Municipal Center rather than Bayside Rec Center. But in recent years the Rec Center has had large crowds, which defeated my goal of avoiding long lines. Having voted in primaries at the Municipal Center, I knew where to go. But for those who didn't, the Registrar's Office made finding the appropriate location easy. This is extremely helpful considering the plethora of buildings that comprise the Municipal Center. Driving east on Princess Ann Road one first sees a sign indicating that voting in the vehicle is only available for 65 and older. I'm sure that it also includes those with handicap placards. The spot was made more visible by numerous orange cones creating an area for a long line. On the sidewalk at the Princess Ann side of the building was a large tent surrounded by a really large display of candidate signs on each side. There was absolutely no way one could miss the spot. A friendly election official was waiting in the tent. He took our Driver's licenses and called our information inside with a 2-Way radio, Shortly afterwards another election worker came out with large envelopes which contained a ballot, a pen & an "I voted" sticker. The process couldn't have been easier. Having planned another stop afterwards, I followed my GPS and turned north at the side of the building. I immediately saw a sign directing one to turn right for those voting inside the building. It also directed individuals to the ballot drop box. So I made my GPS unhappy by turning to explore that side of the building. A large signage display surrounding tents for both political parties was immediately visible. They were staffed and located on both sides of the sidewalk leading to the back entrance of the business. There was absolutely no doubt where one should enter. I highly recommend that those planning to vote early visit the Registrar's office before the lines become long. They're extremely efficient and pleasant.
