Very disappointing experience. The representative who assisted me repeatedly stated that she was an "expert," yet she refused to accept documents that are specifically listed as acceptable on the official Social Security Administration website. I tried to explain the requirements and show the relevant information, but instead of taking the time to properly review my documents or verify the SSA's own guidance, she simply rejected them and sent me home. It is extremely frustrating when people come to a government office prepared with the documents they were instructed to bring, only to be turned away because an employee is not familiar with the agency's own requirements. If you claim to be an expert, you should at least be familiar with the policies published on your own agency's website. read more

This place is unbelievable. You can't imagine the way it operates unless you are here and witnessing it. I took my dad cause he needed some papers printed regarding his ssi benefits. We walked in there were about 20 people with appointments and 6 without. A separate line for walk ins. So I stood there. Waiting ...!!!! After one and half hours they called one person from the walk in line. There are many windows available and only three employees working. After every customer the employee takes about ten minutes to call the next one. At times there were zero customers being helped. So after three hours of waiting one more person got called from the walk in line. At this point I had to leave. I couldn't stand being there for another minute, I knew I would have a panic attack very soon by looking at the way they operate this place. Poor elderly people waiting and waiting ... moms with babies crying and waiting. Why can't these offices operate better. More organized and better staffed ??? It's so sad. I've came to this location before and yes I agree with other reviews that the wait times are long and there's only a few employees working. However, this review is specifically for the girl I spoke to over the phone. She was very rude you can tell by her tone. I called on behalf of my parents because they recieved a letter and my name was spelt incorrectly and they put "hijo". She said it's an easy fix she just has to speak to both of them which was fine. My dad commented on the hijo part and she told me she can't change it in the system it's just set to child and she made a snarky comment stating that there's a parenthesis so it can be "hijo" or "hija" which I replied saying that in the letter there's no parenthesis which is why they were concerned. And she's like, "I'm looking at the screen the letter they sent you" to which I replied, "I have the letter in my hand so do you want a screenshot of it?" Lol she was just very rude overall to my parents and I. I don't know what her deal is. Maybe she needs coffee or something else.... Sad I didn't get her name. I came here recently because I needed to change my name to my now new married name. I realized how important it is to MAKE AN APPOINTMENT ONLINE to expedite your time here and minimize your wait time. My appointment was actually at 1:30pm but I chose to take a shot by going earlier at 11am. I was ecstatic to find out as long as you have an appointment confirmation # for the day you can still be seen as you arrive in the "appointment line." The security guards standing at the 2nd floor entrance was super helpful too. They guided me to step inside to the kiosk to "check in" with the confirmation # and then I was quickly directed to get in the "appointment line." Although the check in was quick, the "appointment line" naturally moved slow because it is only one window that is deddicated to service this line. But I can only imagine how much longer it would've taken if I also didn't make an online appointment ahead of time. The lady who helped me at my window was kind and matter of fact. She helped me get my application processed quickly and I was happy to find out that there was no fee in changing your name with the Social Security office. read more

I went in to follow up on my new card. It has been 3 weeks and I haven't received it yet. I have no appointment so the wait is 2hrs and 5minutes. The same wait over the phone so I decided to just wait in person. There was a wait outside the building. There is a guard manning it. Then let's in a few people the elevator up to 2nd floor when the line inside becomes less. Once you get off the elevator, there is another line to get a number. And so that's where the wait starts. There were 23 windows but only 8 is working. People are getting impatient already. The manager or supervisor keeps on announcing to be patient and they are trying their best. My time came and the lady said they worked on my card but she can't see when have they sent it out. So what she did, she worked on it again then the same letter as last time - Follow up after 2 weeks. So let's wait and see. read more

I was in and out in 10 min! I came in for a name change had filled out all the paperwork online as well as set an appointment online. I checked in electronically from my phone (they sent me a text message). I went straight up to the 2nd floor. The security guard directed me to a short line. Turns out the line was unnecessary because they called my name and I skipped the two people in front of me. I had all my documents prepared and was In and out of there and parking was free! I came to the Social Security office with my father after not being able to secure an appointment online due to an error. We had only about 8 people ahead of us, yet still ended up waiting in line for over 4 hours. While I understand that the security guards are simply doing their jobs, there really needs to be a better system in place for walk-ins. The biggest issue wasn't my own wait -- I'm younger and was able to stand in line while my father sat. The real problem was seeing elderly people, some with walkers, forced to stand for hours because they were afraid of losing their spot. There were empty windows and unused chairs in the waiting area, yet no effort was made to offer them a seat. It was inhumane. Providing a chair for an elderly person is not going to harm anyone. A simple number system could fix this -- allow people without appointments to take a number, sit in the available waiting room chairs, and be called in order. It's frustrating and heartbreaking to see seniors treated this way when the solution is so obvious. read more

Can't decide if this is a ssi office or hell The worker (I don't want to name her) a racist, lazy and dumb woman who has no idea what she's doing. Yells at people. Unprofessional. Can't decide if you're there for your ssi or jail. They will NEVER answer the phone. She told me to fax her something. Called for a month after. Never called back from my many messages. Finally answered one day. 1 month later hadn't even checked the fax I sent her. This was almost 2 months ago. She was supposed to look it over and call me back. Drove to location on 11/3/2021 as I tried phone number on Google with no success reaching anyone (similar to other reviewers). Upon arriving parking security (very kind and courteous gentleman) informed me that the office is only open by appointment and showed me a sign containing information on how to book an appointment (phone number on sign showed 1866-341-0785 and I've attached a picture). I was informed that parking is $5 when parking for appointment to visit the office. I dialed the number and was greeted in less then 3 mins and was able to schedule an appointment for week of 11/15 (appointment availability may vary was my understanding based on services needed as limited slots are available to help maintain social distancing). There are a couple prompts to follow and not sure if my lucky small wait time was due to day and time I called. Lady assisting me with booking appointment was very nice, patient and informative. Explained everything step by step and addressed all my questions. Hope this helps anyone struggling to get in touch with this office. I went to my appointment on 11/17/2021 and was in and out in less than 15 minutes. I also found free street parking off Van Nuys Blvd so was able to save the $5 from the parking lot. Upon arriving, building security at entrance was welcoming and helped guide me where I needed to go (second floor), I had to knock on door to get admitted to SSA office by a second security guarding the door and was asked to get ticket off a machine. I sat for no more than 5 mins after getting my ticket before being called to a window. Lady that assisted me was very helpful guiding me through process for a name change and answering all my questions. I would definitely return to this location if needing SSA services. 5 stars based on my overall experience which was quick and easy, and with great customer service overall handling my SSA service request! read more

I am here to help someone with special needs. No way they could navigate this nightmare of inefficiency and bureaucracy by themselves. First off. Parking is $5. 2.5 hour wait before our number was called. It has 23 windows but only 4 of them are being used. The place smells like what I imagine a musty one star hotel smells like. I tried making an online appointment to avoid this government nightmare, but the prompt I kept getting is that I had to come here in person. Once at the window, we were met with disdain and attitude from the govt. worker. I don't think this worker wanted to be here anymore than we did. Unhelpful, full of attitude, angry person. My mother applied for a social security number on October 2020, went in for an interview never got her social security. Never heard back. They told her to reapply but as replacement through the mail and no interview was needed, we submitted original documents, again, it's the end of January, we got the original documents sent back, never heard back, never got a social security card. Today we called to ask about the status of my mother's application, Casey (an employee) raised his voice at me only because I was asking further questions. Do not come here. They couldn't even tell me what happened with the first 2 applications, making it look like it was just lost. No record, no data, no feedback to provide. Casey was not kind and should definitely be removed from answering customer service help lines. read more

I got married and want to change my name. So this starts with a new social security card. I called to make an appointment, as the website instructed me to do. I waited on hold for over 40 minutes just to be told "Oh we don't make appointments for new social security cards". Okay great. So I show up today at 8:30 ( they open at 9 am) and there are already 45-50 people in line. Greattttt. So we wait outside for a half hour and they start letting us in 10 at a time. When I finally make it upstairs, there is more waiting and more lines. Finally given a number and wait another 30 minutes before my number is called. The workers here were very organized and they were helpful. There are a lot of people trying to process things and everything seemed to run smoothly. I have lost my ssc and was hesitant to go the social security admin office because I've heard how horribly long the wait is especially without an appnt. However, I got there a little pass 9 am, expecting to wait at least an hour. By the time I filled out my application browsed on my phone for a few mins, I was called up. A gentleman by the name of Mike, was so polite, informative and efficient. I couldn't believe I was out in less then an hour. I came here last week for a routine thing and was met with a really unorganized set-up and indifferent staff. Actually, I say indifferent but what i really mean is I got called on the carpet by the rudest woman I have ever encountered in the public sphere. This witch called the next person in line, which was me; I walk over and she yells I was not in line. Not in line? Hell, I only waited for 20 minutes there in one spot. Another lady walked to the window and I'm looking at her like, what's going on? I was in line. But then, so was she. I told you it was a disorganized set-up. So I try to clear up things with, albeit lamely, "Did you call next in line for Window 7?" Witch: "I just said that!" Witch: "You were not in line. I saw you. I will not be with you". I was so flummoxed I couldn't speak and that does not happen to me. I was in the process of opening by mouth to tell her self-righteous ass off when I remembered some self-restraint and as much as I hated to do it, I choked it back, glared at her and went back in line. Thankfully, the next staff person I dealt with was much more gracious and polite and helped me out. They don't wear name tags so I couldn't tell you who these ladies were. Nice one was a middle-aged brunette with shoulder length hairt and the Wicked Witch has very short cropped blond hair and I believe wears glasses. Just looking out for the next person. First of all, The guards were helping everyone that came in but when it was my turn they stopped, I didn't know what form to fill out of even where it was. I had to find the Kiosk thing myself. They just looked at me, was it racial? I don't know. I waited about an hour to be called to window # 3 and the lady had on glasses with short black hair, she was the rudest person ever! I just wanted a copy of a social Security card. I had paperwork on letterhead stating that I was authorized to get it and she tossed the paper back at me and said she can't help me. read more

DO NOT go to this office because they fucked up your applications. I (20)applied my social security number together with my younger brother(16)'s in Dec. in this office and they deferred both of the applications without telling me or anybody. They just left our applications untouched in the office and did nothing to them until I came there myself 2 months later. And they didn't even know why the application was detained for so long. So, they told me they were going to re-progress my application and I could get it in 4 days. When I came in again 4 days later, guess what? They still hadn't got it done yet. Plus, they told me my brother's application was still pending. So, I told them to do whatever they had done to my application on my brother's application (that guy just made a simple click on the computer and the hold on my application was clear), but they said they couldn't because I was not my brother's father or my brother himself (now, what kind of reason was that?). Then, my father called the office and see if he could do anything on the phone (my father was in mainland China and my brother in Hong Kong). And they said there were some storm or stuff happening and thus the application wasn't being sent out (when I heard this, i was like "yea....whatever."), but they were going to follow up and take care of it so that I could get the number in 2 weeks. This was late March. So, now, mid April. I called them again, and they said the application was gone. they couldn't find any of my brother's application, they didn't have any record sending out any application with my brother's last name, they didn't have any record denying my brother's application. The application was just GONE! I didn't trust them at first, because just at the day before I called this very office, I called the international SSA number and they said the application was still pending (they could only see it in the system though) and that I should go to the VAN NUYS office to check the physical documents in person to see what actually happened. Today, I went there and yes, the application was gone. The manager kept telling me something like I should have my brother came here, or to have my father came here (I was like, "dude, make use of your brain, spending another 1000USD to come over and ask you a yes/no question? Let alone the money part, you think everybody has nothing to do except sitting at home and waiting for a number!?"), or have them come over to the US Embassy in Hong Kong to ask whether there was a number assigned to my brother. After a whole hour of waiting and talking (yea, the manager kept talking about stuff that I didn't even give a fuck), the manager in the office finally told me, "your brother can re-apply for the number in the US embassy in Hong Kong." In summary Total hours I spent INSIDE the office: 4 hours for the first time, 1 hour each for the other 3 times Total time for my application: 3 months for my brother: after 4 months, application was lost. Waiting room - 5 stars (lots of chairs and even some plugs; big screens with the numbers on them) (see below for details). Waiting time - 30 min today (showed up at 9:10 am - no appointment); 2 hours last time (showed up at 10 am - no appointment) Waiting room: Pretty busy room but people (in general) were respectful. I could work on my computer both times. SSN workers: 5 stars today (window 4 - nice and helpful guy); 2 stars first time (window 5 - rude and not so helpful woman). I base my ratings on their attitude - the rest depends more on the system than on them. They're tied up by what the computer allows them to do or not. The difference is how they react to that and how they convey it to you. All in all, pretty good SSN office. read more

I had to go to the Social Security office due to losing my card a while back. Location was real nice and new looking. Had to wait around 45 minutes for my number to be called so if you don't have a smartphone, you may want to bring a magazine to read. Sometimes it's hard to hear the number so make sure you look at the monitors around you! Once there, the guy who took care of me was friendly and I was able to get my replacement card in less than two weeks!
