The alcove near the 6th Street entrance with the elevators to the 6th floor where the Social Security Office is
    Dana G.

First off no pictures inside the office because they have posters up all over that taking photos is a no no. To get a My Social Security account on the agency website your identity must be verified. This is done through the credit bureaus. Working in a call center than ran credit checks for potential customers I learned about the complexity of credit bureau practices. You can have credit cards but to establish a credit history things like a mortgage or auto financing is what matters. The alternative is to go into a Social Security office with ID, prove who you are and get an "activation code" to enter on the website to create an online account. BTW by doing that you agree they will no longer automatically send a statement of earnings every few years; but you can still request one -- this process is explained on the website: https://www.ssa.gov/hlp/global/hlp-statement-7004.htm. And, yes, I had to visit this office mostly to get an activation code plus find out about a form a letter had informed me had to be submitted to have my social security disability application accepted for consideration. For my initial visit I called to get an appointment. Besides handling that the agent also explained what documentation I needed to bring with me after I told her what the letter said and she reviewed my disability application status. Once off the elevator follow the signs to the corridor where the office is. There is a sign indicating where the line to wait starts. A guard indicates when the one at the front of the line can enter. Usually the line moves fairly smoothly. There is a metal detector like at airports to walk through after removing belts, wallets, keys and belongings which go through an X-ray machine. Next you go to a kiosk, enter your social security number and indicate whether you have an appointment or not. It prints out instructions on what your # is. It can actually be a number or alphanumeric (e.g 895 or B29). There are many seats to sit in, unfortunately of the uncomfortable plastic variety. You might want to bring along something to read because you might be waiting a while. And unlike for Jury Duty that don't provide a TV etc. to help pass the time. Like a giant parking lot they color code the seating areas. Numbers are called out over the loudspeaker and displayed on large screens mounted on the walls plus personnel call them out. Also sometimes they instead call names out. You are either directed to go to one of the 10 windows or follow an employee through a door. On my 2nd visit I came without an appointment Friday afternoon and the place was nearly deserted. The people who take calls can tell you if it is busy at the moment or not. After about half an hour I was called to the window of the gentleman handling the initial stages of my application. Thankfully a seat was provided to sit opposite him. I explained why I was there. He took my ID and the documentation I brought to make copies of them. He took great care inputting information on the computer and even sought advice from a manager about what he was seeing on the screen. He turned the screen and asked that I verify my earnings records were accurate. After finishing all the processing he outlined what I should anticipate in re my disability application being reviewed (time frame, possibility of being sent to a physician to be evaluated, etc.). I had mentioned the activation code earlier but needed to bring it up again at the end of the interview for him to print out a letter providing it. He informed me I was ineligible for SSI due to my current level of state disability insurance being received but as that might expire before the possible approval of federal disability he gave me a pre-paid envelope with their address and hand wrote on it for his attention. This was to send a copy of the notice of my state disability insurance coming to an end if that occurred while my federal disability claim was still under consideration so he could update my records which automatically would trigger consideration for SSI. He really was working to make sure I didn't fall between the cracks. On my second visit because it was nearly deserted I only waited ten minutes. Because of life circumstances I had allowed the activation code I pickup up originally expire and had to get a new one. The agent handled this promptly and gave me a letter with the code (which also noted a duplicate of the letter would be sent to my address on file) Afterward I had to use the restroom. You get the key from one of the security guards and they are in a side corridor near the elevators. Not the cleanest and the air hand dryer was not working (and still wasn't two months later; have to complain about that). But it was acceptable.

I was seen fairly quickly but likely due to my uncomplicated request. When I left near 12:30p, there was a line out the door with security limiting access inside due to capacity. Security kept the limit of people inside comfortable for everyone. I came at the perfect time, and recommend considering arriving before employees take their breaks for lunch. This location seems extremely busy, and long waits are likely common depending on your situation. With an ever revolving door of people coming in requesting help, employees look spent and over it. I don't blame them, but it was a little depressing once I was called. Most people waiting inside were in good spirits, but the energy of employees behind the glass were over it and again, I was gone by 12:30p. They probably get some out of pocket guests often. The welcome crew that guides and hands your numbers were in better spirits, they really do set the tone for everyone coming in. It can't be easy, so I appreciate everyone that made this experience so seamless.

Upon entering off Figueroa St you'll see two lines to your left, one for birth the other for death. The forms off to the right either for birth or death certificates. Once you complete your form you'll have two lines. Service is very quick I was in and out with the birth certificate in less than 10 minutes around 11am. Plan your day to avoid the LA traffic jam then enjoy your day in LA. Both parents do not need to be present to obtain a birth certificate. Parking available in the structure or street meter. If meter parking is available I suggest that one as you typically won't be there long. So if you live or pass away in LA this is a place you'll have to be at. Don't worry you won't wait in traffic like on the LA freeways at this spot. God bless

I specifically reported that they were in the ceiling, I can hear them running in the evenings. The county inspector came over, notified the building manager days before coming, and said she saw nothing. Of course, the manager quickly replaced the foam tiles, painted them, patched them up and vaccuumed the floor. There were still signs - some urine stains and some chewed corners of tiles- but when I asked if she had seen that evidence, she said it was only in her "job description to look down for rat feces - not to look up." I was amazed... I asked specifically for her to look into rats living in a ceiling space and it's not in her job description to look up? What a sad excuse. It's disgusting that these employees don't do what's morally right, and they get paid big $. Why would you announce that you're going to do an inspection so the builing can hide their evidence? Why wouldn't you look up? You expect me to believe that there's a job description that says don't look up? or barely shift a tile to see the rat nests/feces? I offered to do this myself in her presence and she refused to come back for me to show her the feces. Tax money laundering at it's finest. What is the point of this department if no one does their job? Not even the supervisor cared when I called in. She could hardly speak English, and didn't care at all. Her job security is off the charts.

This is…read morean update that is long over due but my parents had been US citizens for almost two years now (Ya!!!). For those wondering what the sworn in ceremony is like don't get too excited because the whole thing is really a glorified storytelling/money making/recruiting event for the immigration office. Don't worry if you got there an hour or two late because when you get to the sworn in location (for my parents they did it in the Dodger Stadium) you will face traffic jam that are way worse then LA freeway morning rush because they make everyone pay for parking (hence the money making part) and go through all the security checks in order get in. We left at 7am, finally got in at like 9am but they didn't even begin the ceremony until like 1pm because they are still sitting people. And then when they finally begin they will having a bunch of I guess important people telling you the same old "hey I was a poor kid but I work hard and I become successful and this is only possible if you are in America" stories just to make you feel good that you've spend a ton of coins for the citizenship (hence the stories part). Every now and then you will have some immigration officers telling us that they are recruiting and they have booths if you are interested (hence the recruiting event part). I been through it myself back in 2020 but ya it's really nothing to be excited about to be honest, if you wondered why they don't give you the options to opt out of the ceremony it's because it's how they make money and hire new people (Ya capitalism!!).

Earlier in the week I called and there were 63 callers in front of me. I had to leave a callback number. Okay, 63 is a fairly high number. Today I called and there were 21 callers in front of me. I wanted to wait. No option to wait. How can there be 21 people waiting, but I can't wait if I want to? Blank stare. Is 21 the cutoff. 22 no go? Anyway, once you get someone, there aren't very helpful or knowledgeable. You will have to ask to be transferred to a supervisor, but the supervisors don't pick up the phones OR call back. As a landlord, I'm paying for this. There should be more of a balance between the benefits for tenants and landlords. Specifically with working through issues that are contained within the RSO. By the way, the LA County Consumer Affairs people - they pick up the phone. #LEVELUP
