I've decided to do an update of this Social Security Office since their location has moved a bit. It has also been a solid ten years since my original review. I'm not quite sure why they changed from the relatively comfortable digs at 56th and Post Road (which was actually built for them) to an obviously older and far more disheveled building at 16th and Post Road. I needed to snag some documentation so I could complete some paperwork for my father. Surprisingly, I didn't have it. In the old days, it was super easy to just drop in. Sure, you waited. Yet, you could stop in and get served and be on your merry way. These days, the emphasis is on web-based experiences. They also suggest an appointment for most situations, though an appointment is not actually "required" except for a few services. I arrived noting, with some dismay, that there's not a single true ADA spot here unless you go to the employee side of the building where there's two. The front entry has a two-sided double-entry with glass doors. As you enter, there's security to the right and two kiosks where you sign in. You sign in even with appointments, though it appeared appointment times were generally honored. I initially entered and saw all the "make an appointment" signs and freaked. Then, I saw all the "you can accomplish this online" and freaked out. So, I went back to my car (there's no one really offering anything resembling customer service) and tried to call them. After going through a mazes of automated/AI responses that weren't what I needed, I may have screamed "Give me a fu**ing human." Strangely enough, that worked and within seconds I was connected with a human. Even more strangely, that human was surprisingly kind and helpful. As expected, she could not help because I was acting on behalf of someone else. She encouraged me to go into a branch - I noted being in the branch parking lot, and she encouraged me to just walk-in. So, I went back in (I didn't walk, of course. I still haven't mastered that skill). I finally realized the kiosks were there and signed in. The waiting area is basically BMV-like. It's a large room. The employees all sit behind shielded booths and when you get called you go to the associated booth. It's weird and very industrial and stunningly impersonal. Fortunately, I was served by a very nice woman who knew her stuff and resolved my concern fairly quickly (after about a 45-minute wait to see her). All in all, I was pretty stunned to get my issue resolved in one day. So, that keeps my 3-star from being a 2-star. Access? There's one parking spot with a VERY faded wheelchair symbol and the spot isn't close to ADA. The only two spots I saw were on the employee side - so much so that an employee who saw me pointed out the entry was on the other side of the building. They do have an accessible restroom. Most of the booths seem fairly accessible, though most have two chairs in them. I had to move chairs to move up to the counter. The security guard was fine - neither gruff nor friendly. Certainly not helpful. It's simple. A lot can be resolved online these days. Try it. Calling can also help. However, there are those reasons you have to go in and you just have to get through it. It's not great. It's not awful. It's the government (Hey, I can say that. I work for the government). read more

I went today to get my social security card. Was unlawfully refused service. I was told that I have to have an appointment to get a card. That was a lie. I was told that there is a law that says so. I asked which law, she couldn't tell me. There's no such law. It was another lie. What there is is a policy letter, but they are not implementing the policy, which states "We want to make clear that we will not turn people away for service who are unable to make an appointment or do not want to make an appointment. For example, members of vulnerable populations, military personnel, people with terminal illnesses, and individuals with other situations requiring immediate or specialized attention may still walk in for service at our field offices. " I should not have been refused service. read more

was never told i had to make an appointment online, when i do call they never answer... went up there to just try getting my sscard, waited 2 hours got up to a window and a man with an apparent attitude told me i had to make an appointment, i say oh but i didn't know that info, he says, rudely, its all over the building, and dismisses me. saying is there anything else i needed... like dude no you didn't have to be so cold. i hate this place and unfortunately i have to go back up there probably to wait hours before being told i don't have the right information. Office on Network drive. Never seem to get information turned in. They got one envelope But not the 2nd one. Which were both dropped off at the same time .The lady at win4 the very dark lady always give wrong information so try my best to stay away from her read more

I went in on July 16th to get a replacement card for my 16 year old daughter. They told me that the card should get to us within 10 days. I never received the card. I went back on August 10th, and was told that it never got sent and it was stuck in the system. The lady was nice and told me it'd get to me within 5 days. Well, it's September 1st, and still no card. My Daughter can't even get her permit without her SS card and we live 40 Mins away. Ridiculous! I can't keep going in there and I can't get it online because she's under 18! I don't know what to do. read more

I went to this location just before 2pm on a Friday afternoon to change my name. The waiting area was pretty full. I waited a little over half an hour to get called to a window. Since I filled out the application online and brought all the necessary paperwork, my business was done within 40 minutes of walking through the door and checking in at the kiosk. It probably would have been faster if all the other customers had done the same instead of getting coached by staff on what to do. This was probably the best experience I've had at an SSA office. I'm originally from San Diego and I remember waiting at least 2 hours at that office! read more

This may be an odd review, but I felt it necessary to comment on my positive experience this morning. I'm newly married and have heard from countless people what a pain it is to change your last name. I took my original identification docs with me and decided to get there early-they opened at 9am. I arrived a few mins later than 9am, stood in line to get my ticket, and looked around for any sort of documents I needed to fill out since I couldn't print the ones offline. Not seeing anything, I expected to take more time than usual at the window, but that was not the case at all. My number was called about 15mins after arriving and I was out of there within 20mins (I think I timed it at 19mins from me getting out of my car to getting back in my car). The gent in Window 2 (didn't catch his name) was quick and didn't mention that I didn't have any paperwork filled out. It was a pleasant surprise! read more

i called them and i was on hold for 4 HOURS, 4. when i finally got customer service they said i called the wrong number and they can't help me. KEEP IN MIND, i called the wrong number and they told me the appropriate number to call. i called them again and there was a different lady and she told me how to apply for a social security card since my 16 year old daughter needs one to get her license. she told me STEP-BY-STEP what to do and mail the verification for them my mail me my daughters social security card. i just received in the mail a letter saying that my daughter will NOT be issued her social security card. they wrote that i did not send enough verification EVEN THOUGH a lady told me exactly what to put and mail for a request. i am BEYOND upset. read more

I arrived 10 minutes early for my son's appointment, which was scheduled for 9:30. He is 3 years old, and has autism. We received a letter in the mail to visit this office at 9:30, and that it was extremely important. At 10:30, they called our number and took us into the back. By this time, my infant son was crying and my 3 year old was entering meltdown mode, having been forced to sit in a chair for an hour in a room that was uncomfortably hot and crammed with people. This is torture for an autistic child. After having my ID checked, we were sent back to the waiting room, where we waited for another twenty minutes. There was nowhere to sit, so we had to stand. The security guard seemed quite content, being paid to look at his iPhone and boss people around. I noticed that there were people still there who had been waiting since before we arrived, with unbelievable patience. So I'm writing this review for them. I was able to get up and walk out after 1.5 hours, but many others do not have this luxury. I spent this time waiting with the elderly, disabled people and even a family with a three week old infant. Maybe they are used to having their time wasted in this sort of manner. I understand you are busy, but please, in the future, please try to be more considerate of people's lives. read more

I came in on a Tuesday to change my name due to marriage. It was around 3pm, it was pretty full inside, but I left about 20 minutes later. It went quick! Take a ticket, wait for them to call you, have all your documents ready- simple as that. If you have children its best to make sure you have something to keep them occupied. The security guard had to keep advising a woman to turn her phone on silent. Her child was watching cartoons on the phone. They advise everyone to keep quiet so the interviews can be heard clearly. They do not allow food or drinks inside, so with that being said, I recommend eating or drinking prior to entering the building. They will make you throw it out or put it in your car. Overall I had a great experience. read more

The waiting is at best dehumanizing. I went in on a Monday at 2pm you use a touch screen to register in. You get a paper ticket. Mine had #A231. I will remember it for life. All the chairs are lined up facing away from the staff and so close that you will literally and without exaggeration be shoulder to shoulder. On my left I had a guy holding a folder against his chest with both his arms so that his right elbow was pressed against me the entire time. On my right a poor old lady who obviously had no idea why she was there or even where she was. Couldn't have had a bath in the last week either and yes pressed up against me. All I wanted was a new SS card. For the love of all that is good in the world if you can do it online do it. I was near by and figured what the hell just stop in. Bad Idea. Now comes the wait. I had enough time to watch two episodes of Gotham on Netflix. If unaware it's about 40 minutes an episode. Now comes the best part. They don't even call the tickets in order. That's right it went from A227 to A240 without explanation. Was I skipped? Did I miss them calling me? Nope. Apparently they just call them off in any order they feel like. Hands down this was the worst waiting experience in my entire life. Worse then the BMV. Worse then any ER. If Dick Cheney himself could have designed it he could not have done better. The one and only saving grace was that at least when I was called the lady who helped me was kind and capable. I can't tell you how much a relief that was. In the end all I can say is that you should avoid this place like the plague if there is any kind of wait. Perhaps go right as they open. Otherwise be prepared for a very demoralizing afternoon. read more
