I went to this office on February 18, 2025 arriving at 1:42 p.m. I was walking up to the office and a security guard blocked me entering the front door. The security guard asked if I had an appointment. I told him no and wanted to make one as it is posted online you could come to the office to make one. I told the guard I only had a few questions to ask and he said I could call but not enter into the office. The security guard then stated you can only enter the office if you had an appointment as walk-ins are no longer accepted. When I told him this is not stated online I was told to leave or further action would be taken. I am contacting our elected representatives to let them know this is the type of service being given. This office is not open to the taxpayers it serves unless you call and wait on the phone for 2 or 3 hours to make an appointment. read more

2nd time coming to review the status of my SS info. The place is pretty relaxed. This is in the morning. A guard is here & one must use self-serve kiosk to start any service such as appointment, consultation, etc. The place is strictly forbidden to use cell phone. The guard will be on you if you violate this rule. Nice, & quiet! There are 3 windows out front (plus more in the back) for consultation and 1 window to use computer for self service. I haven't seen the consular yet as of this rating. So 4 stars for ambient & tranquility. There are also 2 unisex restrooms for those who need to use it. read more

Got out of work early and went in because when I called and finally got a call back they told me I could do a walk in 3/4pm I didn't need an appointment. Got there at 3pm was told by the guard I could get a number and be helped with 20 minutes left they called me up only to turn me away saying I needed an appointment and had to go to another location which didn't make sense since I was told I could go into any SSI office. The only thing positive she did was scheduled me an appointment at an SSI office near me . WTH. I'm sick of all the red tape and running around. Why does one person say this and another says that. Worst security guard ever. Really should consider having a security guard with more patience especially for those who are older or disabled. Super rude. Super condescending. Perfect! He says with extreme sarcasm. We arrive several minutes before opening time. There are about 10 people waiting in line. No big deal. Then this happens: 1. Security man announces 'if you don't have an appointment, they may not be able to help you'. This is apparently a new procedure beginning in 2025. Nevertheless we weren't too worried because it was not a long line. The security employee asked how many of the people waiting had an appointment. The group answer was nobody. I kind of scratched my head and looked on the social security web-site, thinking I may have missed the notice that one needs to make an appointment. I could find no message re. the supposedly new procedure. We checked in and waited perhaps 10 minutes to be called to the window. We had two general questions that were not spelled out on the website and the Thousand Oaks office was only 15 minutes from our home in Moorpark. The employee asked where we were from and we said Moorpark. Moorpark and Thousand Oaks are both in Ventura County and this SS office is the closest office to our house. The employee said according to the new 2025 regulations, she cannot answer our questions. I said that they were just general type questions. She said nope. 'I can't do that' and you would have to go to the Ventura office. So now, we have to make the decision to drive 20 miles to that office and see if we can talk to a government employee without an appointment. I look on the SS website again and see nothing about us having to go to the Ventura office only. BTW: if we Google Map the SS office, the no. 1 office is the Thousand Oaks office (as it is closest). We take the risk and begin driving to Ventura without an appointment, but as we're driving, my wife is calling SS just in case we could actually get someone to answer our questions on the phone before getting to Ventura (a couple days prior, my wife called the main no. and waited 3 hours before having to hang up before speaking with anybody). This time the call went through in about 10 minutes and the employee was nice, informative and we no longer had to go to the Ventura office. Even though the employee at the Thousand Oaks office actually did answer one question as to when my wife's 2024 income would be reported to Social Security: She answered incorrectly, saying they get her income after we file our 2024 taxes. The employee on the phone says that is only the case if you are self-employed. What else can I say? I don't know if it is general incompetence and lousy attitude at the Thousand Oaks office, or it is this entire government agency? Occasionally there are huge differences of the competence and attitude between different government offices in different locations. Perhaps another time I'll tell the story about how the Simi Valley DMV denied my wife's docs for her Real ID, she went to the Thousand Oaks DMV and they had no issues at all! Interesting. read more

I visited the Social Security office during a quiet hour, and I took a ticket twice. However, they never called my number. I sat there for three hours while everyone who arrived after me was served and left. If this isn't racial discrimination, then what is? He was so patient with me and my questions and went the extra mile to ensure I was understanding all he explained. In the past I've called into the main SS call center (800) 772-1213 and was always on hold for more than 45 min waiting for a rep to help. Once connected I was treated as though I was a bother and rushed off the call. I don't feel it is an attitude the call center should have when retirees are calling for the first time to understand all that is being communicated with SS benefits. Needed to go in for a name change, and a coworker recommended I go to this location and arrive before they open. I did and there were several people in front of me, but I was able to get in and check in shortly after 9am. The security guard was nice and helpful. I was around 8th in line and my number was called about 50minutes in. Once at the desk, it took all of 5 minutes since I had all my documents and filled out my application online. The guy behind the desk, I don't know his name, but he was really nice and upbeat. Very helpful and polite! Recommend going here and definitely show up early so you're around first, otherwise you could be there awhile. read more

This was probably one of my less fun outings of the week. I walked in and the guard was barking orders at everyone. He was pretty surly and asked if I had an appointment. I said I didn't know that you could make them online. Apparently you can. I filled out the written replacement form and waited a solid 35 minutes to get a replacement Social Security card. Went to get my newborn son's social security card. Had to make an appointment for some reason? Doors locked when you get there. Confusion for everyone on how to even be serviced right off the bat (maybe put up some sort of informative sign? Just a thought) Once the guard finally answered the door, he took my paperwork and ID, gave me a form to fill out and left me outside. Filled the form out, gave it back. Waited maybe 20 minutes to be told I didn't have the proper paperwork. Employee snapped at me when I asked why I wasn't told this information over the phone instead of being hurried off the line. Was told "you need to READ the form". How do these people obtain these jobs? Why don't you help people instead of getting all snippety snappety? Pretty ridiculous and unfortunately have to return for the THIRD time once I get the paperwork I need from the doctor. read more

Let me start by saying, no one looks forward to going here. It's like the DMV, a whole process. Luckily for me, I called before driving here. Mr. Darcy explained that due to COVID the office was closed except for appointments. He let me know that I could knock on the door and ask to put my forms in the "mailbox" instead of mailing them if I wanted. He was clear with what was needed to get my name changed as well as what to expect when arriving. I arrived today, knocked, got the form from the security officer, filled it out then asked to go in to drop it off. It took me less than 10 minutes. A couple hours later I received a call from Mr. Darcy asking if I'd like to come grab my documents or if he should mail them to me. He didn't need to call me, but he did. He went above and beyond for me. If you plan ahead and make sure you have everything ready, this will go smoothly. read more

Came here at 9:30 am to file for a new social security card because I couldnt find mine. I waited an hour before I was called just to be told rudely she couldn't help me because I didn't know my social security number. In my head I thought then why is there a box on the paper that says if you dont know your social security number check this box.... So then I went home (20min drive) ruffled through all the papers I had to find my social number. Went all the way back, waited another whole hour and got it done. And may I say the security guy was super rude. Was so mean and annoyed anytime someone asked him a question or needed help. There was this old lady who lived in an assisted living homes and she needed a ride back so she asked if he could call for her because she has trouble hearing and he said no I can't and she said please they just need to come pick me up and he said no sorry you can ask someone else. So a kind stranger did it for her. I think he should be fired if he can't handle having a decent attitude. Hes there to protect AND SERVE isn't he? Then he should serve better. read more

No one there will read this or care, but if you have another option and need help, don't bother calling or going to this office. You would think with the Covid situation and employees not having to deal with crowded waiting rooms, you might be able to get decent service on the phone. Think again. Last October I filed a new claim to switch over to my husband's SS record. Mrs. Rakowski (apologize if not spelled correctly) took the information. My husband ended up being switched to my record, which is considerably less money per month. I have been trying to get this straightened out for months. Calls to the 800 general SS number are useless. Mostly long waits followed by being hung up on. Have left numerous messages for Mrs. Rakowski who doesn't believe in returning calls. Horrible screwed up service, simply the worst. read more

ALWAYS expect to wait at ANY Government Agency and HAVE PATIENCE. They're humans and can only do so much and they have specific guidelines and operating procedures. Don't freak out because they called 112 AGAIN and you have 120. There's a reason & you just have to take a chill pill and relax. Bring a book or something. I hear Fifty Shades of Gray is therapeutic. Don't come here without an appointment expecting to be out within an hour. I wouldn't recommend going on your lunch break and don't go when you're in a hurry. And hire a baby sitter (okay, I'm kidding. Sort of) Security guy is really nice and really informative. He holds the fort down. He has some books and stuff for the kids you did not decide to hire a baby sitter for (Ha!) While they couldn't really help me for my specific case, the woman who did end up helping was friendly and informative as well and gave clear instructions. The only downside to this location is its really open and not very private. If you want more privacy, you can probably ask to speak with someone inside the office (though I bet you'll have a longer wait period) or you can go to Oxnard where they have individual booths away from earshot of the waiting room. read more
