I wish I could rate this a 0 star. Had my appointment scheduled for over 2 months. The day before my appointment, I get a notification that my appointment is canceled and rescheduled. Never was told why, never got a call. And the best part, it's rescheduled for another 2 months away from my original appointment. Tried to call multiple times but it's so annoying and difficult to get in contact with anyone. Not impressed at all. read more

They will not call me back They have not communicated by mail. My claim for SS Retirement benefits (NOT disability!) is stuck there and has been bounced around from claim specialist to claim specialist. I have not received a decision letter and it has been almost 3 months. Really terrible service. I have had to contact my congresswoman for help. read more

My experience was fantastic. The officers, security, and employees were all very efficient, friendly, and helpful. I got there a few minutes a father my appointment time and still got the help I needed very fast. it took me less than 20 minutes to finish up everything I needed. read more

Stopped in to get a replacement card. Parking was great and easy. There was a short distant walk from parking to the entrance door. When I walked in Security stopped and checked me thoroughly. I thought it was a bit much, but it is standard procedure.The process for sure was something else. Although it thought it to be much, I do appreciate them, they are here to protect us and they have to go through extremes sometimes to keep up safe. After that I entered and signed in and took a seat. Shortly after (15 mins) I was called to a window. The process was quick and easy. read more

Had to apply for SS by website. This office did nothing on my account for 4 months. Finally out of frustration, I called my US Senator's office and they immediately sent out an inquiry to Birmingham. Within 2 weeks had approval and my first check. Kudos to my Senator, not this office. read more

Been on Hold with this stupid fraudulent company all morning. And I called as soon as they opened. They are trying to say they paid me too much and want me to pay back a ridiculous amount of money. But when you try to call them back nobody answers. I be dammed I send money that I shouldn't owe anyway to a company that doesn't answer the phone. One hour and a half later still no answer. Still on hold. Calling literally from two different phone lines. It's sad. Answer the phone. Many people need jobs. Isn't that how you're able to sue people that you claim you overpaid. By them working? Pick up a line. Employee some people. I'm at work now and praying o dont get in trouble from being on hold so long. The Government is just the Mob. Strong arming people that have anything to begin with. Dont know how anyone with Morals could work for such a company. read more

It's the social security office...don't go there unless you have a reason ;) Previous trip was perf--I don't think I was there more than 10 minutes. I think I arrived a bit earlier that time; so if ever I return, I'll try to do better. I felt so bad for the lady behind the window. Her computer was really struggling. It wouldn't print for her so she had to ask the woman next to her to print. Unfortunately, some of our address was mistyped, so she had to print again. She tried with her computer again and oddly, it printed when she got fed up and rebooted her computer. It went like....computer shut down, printer finally printed, and then the computer rebooted. Poor gal, she was frustrated! I'm glad I was in good spirits that day because I would have lost it otherwise. We waited a good 45 minutes and I was fortunate the baby didn't offer more than a happy squeal and loads of smiles. I hope I don't have to return for at least another 10 years....... read more

I have to admit when I walked in here I was expecting the worst. Mostly just because government agencies aren't typically the most efficient and when I got here in the waiting room was almost completely full. However their system was actually quite efficient and there were a lot of people working And I made it out of there in an hour. Everyone I spoke with there was very nice and polite. They have an automated check-in which gives you your number And then they post the numbers on the screen when it's your time but there is also someone walking around making sure everyone knows what number is it called and where to go. read more

Typical government operation: slow, unreliable and incompetent. This office in Birmingham is especially inept and disappointing. I already had a My Social Security online account due to beginning Medicare upon turning 65 over a year ago. I filed for my Social Security Retirement online 2 1/2 months in advance of my full retirement age with benefits to begin the month after reaching FRA. The My Social Security website acknowledged my application right after I filed it. The Social Security Administration assigned processing of my claim to the office in Birmingham, AL. I have been waiting OVER 8 WEEKS for the Birmingham office to process my application. When logging in to check the status of my application on the My Social Security website it states: "A representative in BIRMINGHAM ALABAMA started reviewing your application on xxxxxxx" (OVER 8 WEEKS ago) and it also states: "For most people, this review takes 2 to 4 weeks." I appears the Birmingham WSU is filled with lazy, incompetent, affirmative action failure bureaucrats. read more

I have been told that I am assigned to this Social Security office and I have a case manager here. Every time I go to this office, I have to take my shoes off just to get through security. It doesn't do me any good to explain that my left hip has been wired back together. I have asked to speak with my case manager and I am told that I don't have a case manager here. I have received 3 different letters telling me that I will have a telephone interview with this office and the call never happens, however then I get a letter telling me that I didn't answer the call. I have tried to call the contact person on the letter and he NEVER calls back. I have been told that the money I receive is an entitlement and I am not really entitled to it. I have also been told that I shouldn't have paid the taxes. Also, I can't seem to get a straight answer about going back to work. read more

I arrived fully prepared to have to camp out for my turn. Parking didn't seem to be too much of a problem, so I thought perhaps it wouldn't be terribly crowded....psh. I almost didn't have a seat in the waiting area. It's not often, well, ever really, that one can say going through security is a pleasure, but the man was very cordial, offered congratulations on my recent marriage, and even gave extra instructions on where to go and how to sign in. When this type of kindness is offered in a government building, one understands that that employee is going beyond the call of duty. Alas, security was the highlight of the trip. The waiting area was chock-full of folks, with a seemingly disproportionate amount of crying babies. It was clean, not in an inviting way like a dentist's office, but in a way that made you not mind too much spending time there. Everyone's eyes were either glued to their cell phones, or glued to the TV screen, which offered up information on how to retire the easy way (online, of course), top baby names (Noah, Liam, Jacob), science & health news ( the doctor infected with ebola gained an appetite and was eating ice cream), the forecast (77% humidity, perfectly Southern), various ways to avoid the social security office (information that would've been useful to all these people BEFORE they got here), and, oh yeah, the ticket number now serving. I couldn't figure out whatever algorithm was used to decide who went next. I tried to focus on just my letter, but the numbers jumped around before mine, after mine; names were called that were not on the screen. Ticket numbers were announced over the PA, but not displayed on the screen. It was best described as calm chaos, if that's even a thing. Someone's phone was blasting music that sounded like it came from a classic video game, Contra, perhaps. At that point, I decided that this was quality people watching, almost as good of a cross-section of the population as one would find at the airport. That, and Mr. Security, made a trip that could have been a total chore into a borderline entertaining endeavor. However, I don't think I'll be knocking out the task of going to the DMV today. Another government office can wait until another day. read more
