04/13/26, I went to the Jefferson County Courthouse in Birmingham, Alabama today to get a replacement driver's license, and a really nice lady named Toni helped me. I had lost my wallet at home and was trying to get everything taken care of. She explained the newer document rules to prove identity, such as needing things like a birth certificate, and she was very helpful and polite. A friend who was with me asked if there was anything else that might work, such as an old driver's license, and Toni kindly checked and let us know that would help. I came back with it and was able to get my replacement license. Later, she even stopped by and kindly asked if I got my license. I told her yes, and that she was a really nice lady. Huge place. Very clean and very secured Lol. I'm performing my best woman duties as my best friends get married. I am elated to be here for them as they've been there for me in ways that I could never repay them for (has nothing to do with the review I know) I do dislike that all of the ministers here refuse to marry same sex couples here. I know it's their personal choice but it's disheartening all the same. Only one does and he's here only on Friday's and not all day and they refused to give us his information so we had to find someone. Thank God that the pastor that was due to marry me in July was available short notice. The testars is for the discrimination we felt being here today. Moving sucks. Period. Dealing with the DMV: never a fun experience. Dealing with the Jefferson County DMV: needed (several) drinks once I walked out. And yes, I have to go back, because I was misinformed about the required documentation needed. Website is awful. Just bring any and ALL personal documents to be on the safe side. Apparently my United States passport does not mean I'm a US citizen. Wow. read more

Absolutely ridiculous. If you have to come here for a drivers license, prepare to wait. Get in line at 7. Courthouse opens at 8. Bring breakfast AND lunch. A cooler might be a good idea. Bring a long book, such as War and Peace, the entire Harry Potter series or a set of encyclopedias. Waited 5 hours before throwing in the towel. They literally served two customers an hour. Then they started having computer problems. I figured at the rate they were going, they would be closed before they got to my number. And I got there before the courthouse even opened. Completely understaffed. This is the only time in my life that I have felt the urge to run for office, just to fix this system. A person could win just with a promise to fix the drivers license and tag process. I'm embarrassed for the county and the state of Alabama. If you have the option, move somewhere else. read more

I went there today to get a new car tag and the entire process took about 5 minutes, there was no lines at all.

I have only been to a handful of courthouses but I have that many to compare Birmingham Jefferson to. The people working here were timely and efficient as well as friendly and nice! Good location, easy to find and parking is right across the street. The reason for my visit on March 22nd was to witness my cousin get married. If you want a courthouse wedding, come here! read more

This is the (frayed) nerve center of the most corrupt (and bankrupt) county in the United States. Lines for tags and license renewals stretch on for hours. Customer service is absolutely horrible. The non and slow moving employees, in spite of continuous staffing cuts, have long since lost all hope, or have beaten the system. With that being said.... 1. Avoid this place at all costs. Go on line to see if you can pay bills, renew tags, etc. on line. Small fees for this service are nothing compared to miles of driving, downtown parking charges, and hours in line. 2. If you must go, call ahead to see about "best times" for waiting. Also, make sure you have all the correct forms and paperwork before you do. They will gladly tell you "I do not write the laws" while sending you packing for lacking proper forms. 3. They will send you home without being consulted when it is closing time. If you think that you will renew your car tag after work, think again. If there are over 30 people in front of you after 4:30, you won't make it, and they won't care!! read more

This place should be avoided at all costs, just as many other fellow Yelpers have recommended. Just last year, three employees were arrested for taking cash from people in line just to move faster: Jozette Berry, Alisha Cole and Lashonda Smaw. You thought that it was just the politicians that were corrupt? Think again. These lines are always terrible. Some people say that there are good times to go and bad times to go, but it's really just all terrible. Some lines are worse than others. If you need to renew your drivers license, its not that bad. If you need to get your tags for a vehicle, be prepared for a pain in the rear end. If you can go online, send paperwork in the mail, or go to a different location, you should definitely do it. There are very few services you want to do at the courthouse. I will say that all the officers that run security are really really nice. I just wish I could say the same for everyone else. read more

Want to renew something? Maybe get a license? NO! Not here! You will seriously camp out for the necessities and pay a lot to do so. However, if you want a place to get married, this is it. The Reverend is a nice man and works on donations. So, besides the marriage license, it's free! He's very nice and performed the ceremony in less than half an hour. I will admit, we didn't have the money to donate anything that day, but we're going back on our anniversaries to donate. read more

This place sucks. Had to come here to transfer license plates from out of state. Long line. Uninspired workforce. Swear to god she was purposely moving at a snail's pace to aggravate me. Absolutely stoopid. Avoid at all costs. There is no tip or trick to make this any easier. read more

This place is a nightmare. I was born and raised in JeffCo so my opinion is from 30 plus years of dealing with them. I opened a business in Tuscaloosa but also need to provide services in JeffCo. I've now been to the courthouse FIVE separate times, complied with every single thing they've asked, all of which were incorrect. I still don't have a license to legally conduct business there and have now decided I refuse to just for the principle of it all. This is the Detroit of the South. A cesspool of ignorant, uneducated, and rude and they ALL work at the courthouse. read more

I went last week on 3/15 to renew a tag and get a new drivers license. I had heard the horror stories. When I got there at 11:30 there was no one in line and I was able to go and get my tag renewed within 5 minutes. I had to wait a couple of minutes to get my license but the whole thing took about thirty minutes. read more

Do not park in the lot across the street from the Courthouse. The tickets punch the wrong time on them and then when you try to get out you can get stuck in line and run over you time limit. It happened to me. I got in at 10:15 and my ticket said 10:03 so I told the attendant and she said they went by an internal clok so I let it go. I got back to my car in 79 minutes and sat in line for 17 minutes trying to get out. Tried to charge me an additional $5.00. DO NOT PARK THERE read more
