I was not expecting a two hour wait and was grateful to meet some very nice people also waiting. One of them had been there the day before but was being harassed by the security guy so came back that day hoping it would be someone else. He was A LOT and seemed very much wanting to be a bit in your face. I was trying to be nice and that did not seem to have an effect on his snatchy nature. Me and the other two I was talking to were just chatting and he kept coming back and looking around as if we might be shooting heroin together. It was way weird because the office is small and you can see the whole room from his desk. But it is like the DMV though I guess you can make an appointment. I do not know if that is helpful - one of the people waiting said he had done that and it was not helpful. The person working there was a sweetheart and even gave me a heads up about the person working on my stuff so that was appreciated. It has been a long time since I had to have them do something. Again, like the DMV, once you get a person they are usually quite lovely and just doing their jobs but appreciate a smiling friendly face so try not to take your wait time out on them since they are overworked just like the rest of us. read more

I attempted to make an appointment online but the next available appointment was 2 months out. I decided to track their less busy times on Google since I knew I needed to do a walk-in. I was feeling hopeful as I got to their office in the middle of the month and in the middle of the day. To my surprise, I ended up waiting for 2 hours. They have about 14 kiosks but only 3 employees were calling out numbers. It was disappointing that when I got to the kiosk, it only took 5 minutes. A 2 hour wait just to be seen for only 5 minutes was brutal. I wish they had a better system for people just needing to submit documents for proof in person since I already filled out the application online. read more

I have stopped going here entirely and only deal with social security by mail, which is what I should have done a long time ago. It wasn't the waiting but one worker in particular. From the other 1 star reviews on yelp, I believe this employees name is Debbie. Debbie is an older, large woman in her late 50's or early 60's and is consistently unacceptably unapologetically rude, looks like (from the reviews) to most people. Debbie is unprofessional, manipulative, condescending, demeaning, and her behavior is disturbing, especially considering she works in social services. She seems to genuinely enjoy tormenting people. Debbie has verbally harassed me and instigated conflict in hopes I would get upset and argue back. I believe Debbie does this to feel superior and also to be able to treat the recipient of ss as unstable so she can call security if she wants to. Debbie's behavior is completely manipulative and after seeing how many people have been writing about this, I will be writing to her higher ups in social security to point out her behavior. As you can see from the reviews, ask any employee or ss recipient that goes there frequently, they would know exactly who I'm talking about without her name because she is the rudest employee there. In one of the instances I was unfortunate enough to have to go over my case with Debbie, she told me point blank she does "not know how to handle supplemental security cases" herself and that "noone in the office does" in a disinterested and apathetic tone. You would think if one works in social security you'd have to 1) understand more about what your job entails and 2) be a bit more apologetic not knowing how to do your job. Not this lady! Debbie is quite ok with openly admitting she doesn't know how to do her job and doesn't seem to care at all. In this instance, I requested to be transferred to another employee (Kevin), who does know how to work on my case and has been consistently helpful, because she clearly had no interest in helping me. Debbie told me sardonically she had "no problem helping me", feigning confusion (again, EXTREMELY manipulative, taunting behavior) and that there would be no way it would be possible to transfer me to Kevin. So, although EVERY other employee is able to ask Kevin and allow my case to be transferred to him, since he is the most familiar with it and knows how to work on supplemental security cases, for some mysterious reason Debbie couldn't. She was the ONLY employee the entire time I've gone there who "wasn't able" to transfer my case to Kevin, even after openly admitting there's no way she could help me on my case because she was unqualified. A time before that even though I was there 1/2 hr before closing Debbie told me I came too close to closing time (after I had already waited for an hour in the cue) and acted as though I was wasting her time checking on my case, when they were still open! She told me "the security guard wants to go home"?? What?? She was acting like I was doing everyone in the office a disservice even though they were 1) OPEN and 2) there were other people being helped there. Again, such incredibly manipulative and unprofessional behavior. I have a pretty good sense of humor and definitely laugh a lot of bad attitudes off, I also work in high behavioral needs environments. What this lady is doing is cruel, calculated and goes far beyond what could be shrugged off. This type of behavior is pretty ridiculous to me and having to deal with her on three occasions over the course of three years was enough for me to never go back to the office. If I were writing a review about other employees I would give 3 stars as most other case workers I have worked with in the office are very kind. But, seeing as Debbie is so intolerable that I haven't been at the social security office again, I'd say 1 star is appropriate for this review. Debbie is most likely a large part of the reason the reviews are so split on here. The other factors could be wait time, uncommunicative and unmotivated assigned case worker (which I have also dealt with, namely Ping), incorrect information or omitted information on what needs to be submitted for your case file, the office losing submitted paperwork (I always save my paperwork in google docs or take photographs of it before submitting it now) and no updates after submitting requested paperwork. If you don't happen to get Debbie at the beaverton office and haven't been dealing with this particular location much, there are a lot of kind employees here and your impression will be very different. read more

Unfortunately if you're there you are already going through a stressful situation, first thing is the security guards, they act like cops but bad cops, then I finally got to a window only to be told that they can't touch anything I brought in, that my office is in Portland, welllllllll... 4 1/2 years later after refilling 3 more times, I think they had me refile for benefits so it moved my filing date to one that would be more affordable for them, I had a major brain surgery in 2000, for stage 3 cancer and because it was stage 3 they had me do 7 weeks of radiation now I'm loosing feeling and function on my left side leg, face, and arm 26 years later. I question why this took 4 years to finally award me the benefits that I paid for, in advance. At one point the DDS (Disability determination services had told me that they were requesting from the local Portland office to have them send me questionnaires regarding my disability, the Portland SSA office did not respond to them totally delaying my application, overall they too 4 1/2 years, this amount of time could have killed somebody waiting for benefits, fortunately I have a great support network with my wife and family. I had filed complaints but must have fell on deaf ears. That are contractors. read more

I was here at around 1:24pm at window 13. The Karen in there was super rude and was so passive aggressive about everything. After our conversation of her being so hostile the entire time. I told her she shouldn't be talking to people like that even if you are having a bad day or something going on. And no apology. Typical Karen. We went back out and I talked to security and he was able to get us another person and she was super kinda and helpful and got what I needed to get done. Applying for anything here like SSA / SSI Benefits looks very grim for our future. Ok so I am gonna go out on a limb and say the DMV, and the Social Security Office are two of the most despised locations for most people to go. I however have been dragging my feet getting a new Soc Sec card. So I got to the office at 9:20...i didn't have an appointment so I knew I was in for a slog. But honestly it was not bad at all. I was able to scan the QR code and complete my request online, and I just followed up to see if there were any quicker options...there weren't. I just found people trying to do their jobs as best as they can. All my interactions with the staff were wonderful. Although I had to return for a second visit to complete my issue, because I had incorrect paperwork, I was in and out within 30 mins both trips. I read all the bad reviews for this office but I had a completely different experience there! I made an appointment for 9:10 am just after they opened (you can make the appointment online) about an hour before my appointment I received a text with a link to check in when I arrived which was before they opened. I checked in whileI was in line with the link and it sent me a number and said when I got inside to have a seat (seating is limited) and wait for my number to be called. There was a line of about 25 people. When they opened at 9 the security guard came out and called forward anyone with an appointment and we were let inside first. We sat down for no more than 5 minutes and I received a text that our representative was ready for us at Window 1. We were in and out in 30 minutes! It was a great experience. Security guard was nice the agent was nice. My advice is to definitely make an appointment and try to get one at opening or as close to it as you can so they don't get backed up throughout the day. The security officer is the nicest person you will meet in your time there. From what I could hear, the staff was rude and unempathetic to everyone. I had filled out my case online and brought everything mentioned on my confirmation page with me. It turns out I needed an additional document I had never heard of. I was stunned. I waited weeks for my appointment just to be turned away in 10 seconds, before I was even done sitting down. I was trying to process this out loud with the representative ( I was calm but trying not to cry ), and I stated I had not heard of that before. It was not offered or mentioned during my divorce filings or on the SS website (notarized divorce decree). What is this, and where do I get it? I got a "not my problem, go away" type of reply from the lady working my window. I was treated like the biggest waste of her time ever, She definitely should not be working with people in a vulnerable time in their lives. I did tell her, "You are being rude, I am trying to understand, and you are not listening." She didn't care. I told her I had waited weeks for this appointment, and she just offered to make a new one rather than help me in my current situation, as is her job. I will be getting the required document, but not going back to this location to be treated as a subhuman bother. read more

Mom went in to drop off an envelope and wanted to make sure she's dropping it off at the right place after calling multiple times with no answer, and he started to scream at her and was very rude and brutal in his answers to her. Attempting to obtain a replacement Social Security card for my 17-year-old son which was needed in a couple of days as he was applying for the Marines. First call to Social Securtiy the hold time was 45 minutes, but they did provide me with a callback option. The agent told me that my son needed to complete the paperwork and I needed to sign it and then the replacement card would be mailed within 10 days. I told her that didn't work because we needed it sooner. She offered no alternative. When I talked to the recruiter, he told me they would issue what amounts to a temporary card that would work for their purposes. It would have been nice if the agent told me that. Therefore, I called back again to make sure they could indeed issue a temporary card. This time, the agents were too busy and I would have to call back another time. No option to leave my number. When I called back a half hour later, I was able to get through to the agent line and hold. The message was, We will be with you in a moment," followed by a message that said, "Your hold time is one hour." I guess their definition of a "moment" is different than mine. This time, there was no option to leave a message. Anything the government runs is a joke. A lack fo competition = a lack of customer service. read more

After reading the reviews, I was terrified to visit the local Social Security. Fortunately, my experience was not as bad as I anticipated. Here are a few tips to help you get prepared the next time you visit the local office in Beaverton. 1. Arrive 30 minutes before 9am. If you have a job, ask for half-a-day off. If the parking lot is full, park on the sidewalks of the neighborhood (2-hour parking is allowed during weekdays). Do not park in front of the business adjacent to the office. Be prepared to stand in line before they open at 9am. 2. People with 9 o'clock appointments go first. If you haven't booked an appointment in advance, be prepared to wait longer. I haven't tried booking appointments. I assume the phone call would be a hassle. Furthermore, you might have to book weeks in advance. 3. Fill out your paperwork beforehand. I researched online and printed the form I needed to fill out. Find these forms at the official website. I made sure to attach all documents required. If you're not positive which forms to fill out, ask a trusting loved one to help you out. 4. No eating or drinking in the waiting area. I think that's self-explanatory. So make sure to stash away your Starbucks before you wait in line. 5. No talking on the cell phone in the waiting area. Use your phone for browsing. Just don't make phone calls. If you must speak to someone, step outside. 6. Enter your info at the kiosk. Upon entry into the office, clutch your purse. Just kidding ... There is a kiosk to your left. Enter your social security number and reason for coming. Press enter. Then, your ticket number gets printed. Grrrab it! Take a seat in the waiting area to your right. 7. Listen for your number and window. During my visit, the display above did not show any numbers. On this very occasion, a person read aloud a number. Know this, numbers are not called in numerical order. It depends on your reason for being there, as indicated when you entered your info at the kiosk. So listen carefully ... If you arrive on a day when the display shows a number, you'll need to simultaneously watch and listen for your number. They are not always in sync and you could miss your number if you don't watch and listen. Remember this. You could arrive after the person in front of you and end up being called before him or her. They will call your number and window. Go to the window. Windows 1-5 surround your waiting area. Windows 6-12 are through a door a few yards away. 8. If you are lost, ask the security guard. He or she stands towering ... ahem ... before you with helping hands. Hard to miss. Also, sometimes the person next to you might be kind enough to help you out as well. 9. Give yourself a pat on the shoulder. I waited in line 30 minutes before 9am. Entered the building. I was out the door by 9:40. Phewww! Remember, be generous to yourself when booking a day at the local office in Beaverton. read more

I'm not going to lie - coming here is absolutely miserable. I had to wait for 2 hours to turn in my paperwork to be issued a new social security card...for the entire time, the waiting room was packed full of folks who ranged from irritated to miserable and it seemed like half of them were locked in a contest to see who could cough out the most germs. While I was waiting, I had the brilliant idea to call the SSA and try to schedule an appointment. However, the soonest available was a month and a half out. So I stayed put. With that said, once I finally got up to a window, the process took about 5 minutes and my card arrived 3 days before the earliest day it was supposed to even be mailed out. I never ever ever want to have to go back there again, but when thinking about how many people have to get pumped through there and how relatively few employees there are, I find it hard to hold it against the folks at this location. Perhaps the SSA as an entire organization has some thinking to do about how it handles business, but the people who work here did alright by me. read more

Fifteen months after getting hitched, I finally went in to change my last name on my Social Security Card. I decided to go in at 11, in a futile attempt to avoid any "lunch hour rush" that I thought might occur. I found these things out: It doesn't matter what time you come in, every seat will be filled with people. Per the season, each and every one of these people will be sneezy and coughy. This makes me apprehensive to occupy a newly available seat, despite the fact that I had to wait precisely one hour. To the minute. If the previous notes don't tickle your germy-paranoia bone, don't think that you can take up this hour eating the lunch that you picked up on the way here. No food, no drinks.(Appendix note A) You will, however, be entertained by Star Trek posters telling you to "Go Boldly" to the Social Security website. You may not take a picture of the aforementioned posters to show your nerd friends, because the "security officer" said so. Also photographs are dangerous. Never forget that, kids. You will probably have a lady sitting near you telling you her life story and what a horrible card fate has dealt her because she has been waiting for her number to be called FOREVER.(Appendix note B) When your number is called, you will not be greeted warmly by the person in charge of taking care of your paperwork. You will note that they did not make eye contact with you at any point during the exchange. We are all business up in here. You will leave feeling satisfied but unsettled. At least there is a dedicated parking lot. This experience was decidedly A-OK. Appendix: A. I saw two people standing outside the window in the cold horfing down their cheeseburgers eyeballing the "security officer" the whole time. You could say they were some cold stares. B. You will later find out that at the time she was talking to you she had been there approximately 15 minutes. read more

I know a lot of people bitch about places like this - I've done it plenty myself. But compared to the hellhole in San Jose, this office is clean, well lit, ventilated. The employees were helpful and polite. Due to my own complicated situation I had to come back, and the person I worked with made that return visit as easy and expedient as possible. I have been a Rep payee for decades and have had some good and some very bad experiences with this office just depends on who your speaking to, some workers are there to help and some seem like they don't like their job much and have zero customer service. Always try to handle anything by phone or online if you can so you don't need to walk in to the office , if your just needing a new SSI card you can find your form online and fill it out so its ready to be dropped off, they do have a drop box outside, if you have an appointment make sure you show up early and prepared to have your purse checked at random like your a criminal. read more

I would not wish this experience on my worst enemies. 1) Waited for 4 hours. 2) Lost of ex-convicts there for government benefits 3) Half the numbers were called out, half showed on the machine 4) Lots of people missed their numbers 5) My number was skipped on the machine 6) The guy I was standing not 3 feet from said he called my number 7) Saw my ID said military on it, then he talked for 15 minutes about how he was a marine. 8) Finally managed to get him back on track to try and look at my paperwork 9) Said these were the incorrect documents. 10) I showed him a printout of the required documents from SSA.GOV 11) Got told the "required documents" on their website were incorrect. 12) They "Do not care" what the website says, it's what their internal policy says. 13) The guy printed out a webpage and folded the top half. 14) Said "We are not allowed to see internal regulations" 15) I could clearly tell at the bottom of the webpage he printed from a public website 16) It was not even the official social security website, I think it was a blog 17) I work night shift, so I essentially had to skip a night of sleep to get snubbed by a liar. 18) On my way out the door, we sarcastically said thank you for my service. After reading the reviews, I was terrified of this particular errand. I put it off as long as I could, but I really needed replacement social security cards for myself and the kids - they'd been lost for years. So with fear in my heart, we decided to just go for it. We arrived right at noon on a Thursday, in the middle of the month, and we were back in the car driving home at 12:26! Less than 30 mins from parking the car, we were driving away! I was shocked. Everyone was so nice, and we were helped out by a jaunty Finnish gent. He was a delight. Others have already described the process, and it was to be as expected. Kiosk and helpful security guard right inside the door. Grabbed our number and sat down. I found the display monitor very helpful actually - it listed what numbers were currently being serviced at each window, so we knew about when our number would come up. In addition to the monitor, they also verbally called the numbers and told them what window to report to. The numbers seem to be organized with a letter in front of the number, depending on what you are there for. So we were with a letter W in front of our number, so I just paid attention to the other W's that were being called. We had only been seated for about 13 minutes before our number was called. Then the employee that helped us was so friendly and so helpful. I wouldn't say this was the most fun I've ever had in my life, but he definitely added some enjoyment to the process, and it wasn't near as painful as I anticipated it would be! I don't know if its because I was there in the middle of the month, or the middle of the week, or the middle of the day, or if its just always like that. I'm guessing, based on the other reviews, that it can be pretty busy and the wait can be pretty long, but that was definitely not our experience. read more

I called the Beaverton, OR, office as it is February 5, and still have not received my wife's or my W-2 forms so I can submit our tax information to our accountant. I was put on hold and told there would be a 2 hour wait to speak to somebody. I then called my accountant's office and was advised I could go online and set up an account and access our W-2's. This was an exercise in futility at best as I tried 4 or 5 times, and first it would not accept my user name's or passwords. Then it would not accept my answers to the security questions. This is absolutely unacceptable. If a private business operated like this it would not be in business very long. I only gave a one star as there is no choice that is lower. read more
