The staff at the West Linn library are top notch- incredibly personable, super friendly, always willing to help and you can just tell they love their jobs. This library always has a welcoming and happy vibe. You can see it is well cared for and this library is always clean. We tend to park in the back since it is closer to their children's area which is downstairs. The adult lucky day (newest books that you can't put on hold and have a 14 day loan timeframe) are upstairs where you also will find the holds. The staff are so helpful with getting holds for you and even go the extra length to find books that are not even in the Clackamas county bandwidth. We have gotten books as far from as Montana when certain books are harder to find. The West Linn library has so many thoughtful touches that makes this place so special. They do scavenger hunts every other month, the tales to tail program, reading summer program (where each child gets to pick out a book to take home that is theirs, complimentary Blazers ticket, etc once they completed the program), curated book lists by grade/reading level, they offer tons of youth activities- in house (especially on days that primary schools have the day off) and take home activities too. They have a community puzzle, normally a survey or a this/that to engage conversation. Their weekly programs like story hour were a staple for our kids when they were younger. I highly recommend checking out this special library and look forward to taking my kids there.

There are large windows facing a green space, so lots of natural light as well. As a bonus: if you have a Clackamas County library card, you can take seeds from their community seed bank. They've taken so many precautions because of COVID and I feel safe dropping by to check things out. They're also doing free printing during COVID (you just send it to their email and pick it up there). The first 10 pages are free. Super grateful to have such a resourceful library so close by.

During non-COVID times and hopefully soon enough again they offer reading circles and storytimes for kids, of which we took advantage quite regularly. The online system, including Libby and Kanopy for books and movies, respectively, is comprehensive. You can search for specific things to read, browse librarians' and others' recommendations, sign up for Zoom events, etc.. You can also request purchases to add things to their collection and if that's not an option they'll make an interlibrary transfer -- eg, from somewhere else in Oregon or Washington -- on your behalf and find whatever it is you'd like to read and have it sent to your preferred WA County branch for pickup. All free!!!

What makes it better is that it's part of the Shute Park, that includes a large play structure, the aquatic center, green areas and a parking lot that accommodates about 30 cars. You can spend a whole day with the family here, full of fun and healthy activities. There's a family restroom by the children's area, a large meeting room as well as a few small meeting rooms. Internet is free and desks have electric outlets so you can work here comfortably. You may bring food and drinks in. A computer training room is available, with about 29 computers and a projector. Since it's a small library, the selection of books and movies is limited, but that doesn't stop people from coming to enjoy a quiet, relaxing and entertaining place to read or browse on the Internet.

Besides, the workshop I attended was free of charge. And taking public transportation, depending on where you live perhaps, can be fun in Portland. Back to the Metro Regional Center. I attended a social media workshop for marketing your own business -- in case you missed that from my pictures. Interestingly, Yelp was mentioned a number of times as far as getting more testimonials written about your business. Unfortunately, being an editor and writing coach, I am not sure my business fits the Yelp model, but now you know! And you can always shoot me a DM. Even though I had been asked to bring my own lunch -- this class being offered from 12:30 to 2:30PM -- the SBDC hosted the event with plenty of vegetarian options to snack on (yay, Greek wine leaves with rice) and the water was nice and cold. Definitely will try to attend more meetings here.

I like to lead a healthy & low impact existence but it isn't always convenient. Sure, now we have the big blue bin that I can throw my paper, plastic bottles and cat food cans into, but where do I recycle my block styrofoam or my old computer parts for free? Where can I get some info on how to compost my food scraps at home without buying some $15 book on home composting? How about a list of DIY at-home green cleaners made with ingredients from my local Freddy's? And then, there was Metro. Not only does Metro have free pamphlets on all of this info plus more, you can also get all of the info off of their website at: http://www.metro-region.org/ and save trees (if your a hippie like me and can't help but consider those lovely trees) They have info on: - nature & local GreenScene activities - garbage & recycling - sustainable living - getting around Portland w/o a car - planning & conservation For those of you with families out there they have "Story & a stroll at Tryon Creek" geared towards kids in nature. If you are a novice green-thumb like me in the spring/summer they offer FREE classes on natural gardening. Or even if you don't recycle at all, but your neighbor asks you what they can do with their old car tires, you can give them Metro's recycling # 503-243-3000, and you have just done your good deed for the day. Overall Metro gives me good balance. I can be lazy, yet proactive. I let them gather the info and then I take advantage of it. This is getting scary, i've been here enough times now that they are starting to know who i am. It…read moredoesn't even feel like a chore when i go here. and with friendly staff who have a sense of humor i find it hard to resist joking with them. If you have to take a test, be there before 3:30 in order to ensure you get to take the test. if you're retaking the test go there a little before 4 and they'll let you cut in line. if you're going to do any other things other then driving test, go there right after 4 and the wait is a matter of minutes.
