Unfortunately I am standing here at 1 pm on a Monday and I drove across town specifically to go to this establishment (looking for spices to be precise) and it is closed. It really amazes me that businesses aren't open when people are out shopping. Ok, celebrate the Sabbath, but What about Monday and the hours before 11 or after 6? As I stand here writing this, two other people walked up and then left. Perhaps this is what is the most aggravating part. If you know downtown Bismarck at all, you know parking can really suck, yet the owner posted an 8 1/2 x 11 sign on the door, so one has to walk up to read it, meaning parking someplace like one one of the ramps that cost money. I don't know if they even validate, but I guess I will never know now. And to think I told my daughter just last week that I no longer needed to buy my olive oil in Nashville or order spices online. Just sad.

We were greeted right away as there was no one else in the restaurant. Its an open floor plan with two rooms. Im guessing its quite lively in the evenings. We shared the chopped salad and the Daisy pizza. The salad was good, though not a traditional chopped salad--it used that trendy wild greens mix that so many restaurants are leaning on these days. Personally, I'm not a huge fan, but the menu did specify it, so that one's on me for not paying closer attention. The pizza, however, was absolutely terrific. The crust was soft and chewy with just the right amount of char from the stone oven. The combination of the sauce, cheese, and fresh basil was spot on. They also drizzle a flavored oil over the top--we couldn't quite pinpoint what it was, but it added an extra layer of flavor that really elevated the pizza. We devoured the whole thing--three slices each! At around $20, the pizza might feel a bit pricey, but it's clear that everything is fresh and made from scratch, so it's well worth it. Service was attentive, though we were the only ones there at lunchtime. I imagine this place really comes alive in the evening. I'd definitely come back to try more of the menu--and next time, I'm not sharing my pizza.

I've even made my own from scratch with very good results. But I must say: The Walrus blew my mind. Their presentation is absolutely fantastic. The cakes are meaty, just-right-crispy and delicious and they are served perched on a bed of gorgeous greens. The greens are lightly dressed in a lovely vinaigrette and topped with perfectly roasted veggies and feta. YUM! We also ordered the artichoke and spinach dip. Delicious. AND served with plenty of yummy crostini for dipping. So many places skimp on the dippers, and it's always annoying. Not so at The Walrus. Service was prompt, friendly, attentive and efficient. If I'm ever back in Bismarck, I'll be campaigning for a return visit. Until then, I'll be dreaming about those crab cakes.

Not unlike when grandma decorated her house in 1973 and never changed a thing. It is not bad or anything, it is just maybe not a great backdrop for poorly executed over priced food. Service was great, like most places in Bismarck, people are friendly. I love that. Saturday night around 6:30 there was no wait and we got to a table right away. Drinks were good, but the fresh bread they brought out was great! We started with the bone marrow appetizer, we liked it. It could have used a bit more seasoning and would have greatly benefited from a lemon wedge to balance the richness. I ordered the New York strip with Jack Daniels peppercorn sauce, and this is where the real problems started. The steak was way overcooked and under seasoned. The sauce had almost no flavor at all. The chewy peppercorns were the most entertaining part of the whole dish. I had planned to just eat it and not make a fuss; however, our server noticed the steak was overdone and offered to get me a new one. I said sure, thanks. No more than five minutes he pops back with a new steak. He told us that this one was ready but the other order was waiting on their pasta so they would fire a new one for the other table. I cut into the new one and it was more overdone than the first one. Now we have a bit of a situation and I felt somehow it was my place to solve it. I agreed to eat the new bad steak, so the other table could get one and we were both not having dinner. Quite the kerfuffle, when I had intended to just eat the first steak. When it was all said and done, I ate about half the new steak and a quarter of the first one, so it is not like I went hungry. The server came back and explained they were having some technical issues with kitchen thermometers and that he was going to take some of the price of the steak off our ticket. I feel this was a mistake. A gift card to give them another try or comping the whole steak would have been more appropriate. In all fairness though, the broken thermometer was not at fault for flavorless sauce, or the in seasoned steak.

The ambiance is that of a traditional upscale restaurant, with (most) patrons dressing in their Sunday best. Our kids enjoyed their food off the kids menu. We ordered a lobster bisque, Caesar salad, and crab cakes for starters. The lobster bisque was very, very bland--even for me! And I never add salt to anything, not even to most of my cooking lol! My husband was dousing it constantly. Unfortunately, even with all the added salt, it was tasteless. The crab cakes were ok, and the Caesar salad was standard. I ordered the pecan-crusted walleye for myself--it seemed a bit overcooked and I ended up eating only half. We tried chocolate cake for dessert and it was also just ok, a bit dry and also bland, surprisingly. I hate to give this place a lower rating because it's hard enough as it is to come by a fanciful restaurant in such a small town. They're trying, but need to step it up in the taste & preparation department.

The staff is notably good at their job. Consistently. They seem happy to be there, they're joking around with each other, genuinely they provide a fine atmosphere for a local pizza joint. The consistency is solid. I order online every time, every time they get my order right. And every time I order my food is on point. The food itself is about what you could expect from a top local pizza joint. This ain't no highfalutin chicken Parm, but it's a solid sandwich. It'll get you a good meal with enough left for lunch the next day. The meatball subs always on point with meatbulbs that are too big for a single bite. An enjoyable mess every time. For a small restaurant, they also have an impressive wine selection. We started with the garlic bread, hot olives, and meatballs -- all of which were flavorful, balanced, and absolutely delicious. For entrées, our table had the breaded walleye, the Bolognese pasta, and the Porchetta. The walleye and Bolognese were outstanding, but unfortunately the Porchetta was a big letdown. The skin was chewy rather than crisp, with a thick layer of unrendered fat beneath it, and most concerning, it still had visible pig hair. I was expecting the classic combination of crackling skin, melting fat, and tender pork, but instead it was oddly undercooked on the outside, dry inside, and after biting into hair, I really lost my appetite for it. We finished with tiramisu and a torte, and both desserts were excellent -- a strong way to end the meal. Overall, Anima Cucina has a lot going for it: charming atmosphere, friendly staff, great starters, and standout entrées (other than the Porchetta). I'd happily return for the appetizers, pasta, fish, and desserts, but I'd avoid the Porchetta based on my experience.
